KIA is a big name in South Korea as it is the second largest car manufacturer there after the Hyundai. Though, Hyundai is the parent company of Kia and owns 33% shares of the company. Kia has showcased its product lineup at the 2018 Auto Expo Delhi where the showstopper was the SP Concept which they are cooking for India and other emerging markets. They have also bought other vehicles in India for testing purpose as well.

There were so many speculations with the name of Kia SP Concept production model. After multiple hunches with Tuskers and Trailster as its name in the industry, Kia finally revealed the name as Seltos. Here are a few interesting things to know about Kia.

  1. Kia is a 74 years old company which started in 1944 as Kyungsung Precision Industry. Originally it manufactured bicycle parts and steel tubing. Samchully was their first domestic bicycle which they rolled out in 1951. Kia got its name in 1952 and stated building licenced vehicles for Honda motorcycles and Mazda trucks. Later on, it also started manufacturing licenced products for Fiat and Peugeot. This was brands start into the world of 4-wheels

  2. Kia’s market started to fall in 1997. Ford was among the bidders to get Kia under its shade but Hyundai managed to do it better now Kia is functioning as the subsidiary of the South Korean major.

  3. Post Acquisition of Kia, Hyundai became the world’s 4th largest auto manufacturer after Volkswagen, Toyota, and General Motors. Hyundai has Kia and luxury brand Genesis under its nameplate. They are now serving all major countries and location across the globe.

  4. Kia Motors America established in 1992 which gave the brand a good boost to deal with the international players. Later it also entered Europe where the successful “Tiger Nose Grille” got its shape. Father of this grille is Audi’s Ex-designer Peter Schreyer who joined Kia as the design head. This new design helped Kia capture the global presence and gave a powerful boost to the sales numbers.

  5. Hyundai and Kia are producing Badge engineered products and share the same platform to build different vehicles. For. eg. Kia Picanto and Hyundai i10 are siblings who share their platform with one another. Similar is the case with other models including the upcoming Kia car Seltos, that shares its platform with Hyundai Creta.

  1. Kia Sportage

(Hyundai Tucson and Honda CR-V Rival)

Kia Sportage is the most popular car ever from the manufacturer. In fact, this SUV brought the maximum popularity to the brand with its Tiger nose grille. It is a direct rival to the Hyundai Tucson, Honda CRV and also Hyundai Creta and its rivals to some extent. It gets a big range of petrol, diesel, and hybrid powertrains with different power output. A 1.6-litre TGDi petrol engine is tuned to deliver 130 bhp and 174 bhp of power and is available with 2 WD and AWD configurations. The smaller diesel mill is a 1.6-litre unit available with and without a 48V hybrid system. It generates a power output of 114 bhp and 134 bhp of power. Both these engines come mated to a 6-speed manual and 7-speed DCT gearboxes. Alternatively, it also has a bigger 2.0-litre diesel hybrid engine that generates 182 bhp of power. It has an 8-speed automatic gearbox for on-road operations. One launched, Kia Sportage price will fall between Rs. 16 Lakhs to Rs. 20 Lakhs (Ex-Showroom).

  1. Kia Stinger GT

(Audi A4 and BMW 3-Series Rival)

Kia Stinger Stinger GT  is the most affordable performance car. It has also received a good number of accolades including the WhatCar Car of the Year 2019. Kia Stinger in India is expected to come by 2020 and will be competing with big cats like Audi A4 and BMW 3-series.

Kia Stinger is blessed with 3 powertrains; 2.0-litre and 3.3-litre T-GDi ISG petrol engines developing  242bhp and 361 bhp of power with 353 Nm and 510 Nm of torque respectively. Along with these two, Stinger also gets a 2.2-litre CRDi ISG diesel engine that churns out 197 bhp of power with 440 Nm of torque. All these engines are mated to an 8-speed Automatic gearbox. Kia Stinger price will remain between Rs. 40 Lakhs and Rs. 45 Lakhs (Ex-Showroom).

  1. Kia Soul EV

(Hyundai Kona Rival)

Kia Soul EV is an electric vehicle and holds a rigid demand base internationally. India is sighting the greener alternative for petrol and diesel fuel and hence EVs will be the next big thing here. With the arrival of Kia Soul EV, a number of other electric vehicle is also scheduled including the Renault Kwid, Maruti Suzuki WagonR, Hyundai Kona, Toyota C-HR, etc.

Kia Soul EV will be arriving in 2020. The production model will churn out 201 bhp of power and 395 Nm of torque. It will carry all major safety features along with a luxurious cabin that will contain 10.25-inch infotainment display which we will be seeing inKia Seltos, an 8 inch HUD, and a 7 inch TFT display on meter console. Kia Soul Ev price in India is expected to hold the range of Rs. 24 Lakhs to Rs. 28 Lakhs.

  1. Kia Carnival

(Toyota Innova Rival)

Kia Carnival is one of the most luxurious MPVs in the market. It sells for a premium over Innova as well. It has good chances to become the second product from stable after the Seltos. Kia Carnival is a popular people mover internationally and gets a host of futuristic features.

Kia Carnival is good for 7 people on board. It has automatic seats in the front with memory function, big and sporty alloy wheels and a fully functional infotainment system. Kia Carnival gets 2 engine options under the hood. The 3.2-litre V6 CVVT petrol engine is 276 bhp of power and 336 Nm of torque. It also has a 2.2-litre 4-cylinder CRDi diesel engine that generates 197.13 bhp of power and 440 Nm of torque. An MPV with V6 engine might not suit Indian taste, Kia may replace it with a better fit along with a lot of other things to bring Kia Carnival price around 22 lakhs to 25 Lakhs.

  1. Kia Picanto

(Hyundai i10 Rival)

Kia Picanto hatchback is one of the most affordable and city-friendly cars. It shares most of the bits with Hyundai Grand i10. Picanto interior has a fully functional dashboard with all major functionalities to it. On the exterior, It also gets the majestic Tiger Nose Grille with an imposing setup of lights and hood.

Kia Picanto gets 3 engine options under the hood. The 1.0-litre MPi petrol engine is the smallest one with 66 bhp of power and 96 Nm of torque. It comes mated to a manual gearbox. The bigger 1.25-litre MPi engine is a better package with 83 bhp of power and 122 Nm of torque. It has the options of manual and automatic transmissions. Both these engines are available in Hyundai Santro and Hyundai Grand i10 in India. Kia Picanto price in India will fit between Rs. 4.5 Lakhs and Rs. 8 Lakhs.
