Yamaha gears up to capture 10% of the Indian scooter market
Snapshot: Scooter market in India has significantly grown over the last few years and Yamaha wants to join the bandwagon that is currently led by the giants like Honda and Hero MotoCorp
Last fiscal year saw a giant leap of 23.24% in the scooter sales where other categories struggled to keep up with the time. Presently, Yamaha has almost 7% of the scooter segment which it caters to with its products like Ray, Ray Z and Alpha. On an average, the no. of scooters sold in India is close to 3 lakh units every month. Yamaha's majority of scooters go to Southern and Western regions of India, and these regions account for 70% of Yamaha's scooter sales. Last fiscal, Yamaha was last in the list in terms of sales with just 1,76,981 units sold. HMSI topped the list with 19,02,859 units which was followed by Hero MotoCorp which sold 6,90,079 scooters whereas TVS Motor sold 4,56,975 units.
"Currently, we are doing around 23,000 units of scooters a month. In the next few months we are aiming to get around 10 per cent market share in the vertical as our products are now well established in the market. Our current focus is to consolidate these three models in the domestic market by taking them to newer markets and making more consumers aware of the product," said Roy Kurian, Vice President - Sales, Yamaha Motor India.
The Yamaha family presently consists of over 400 dealers, 250 branches and roughly 500 sub-dealers across India.
