About Aprilia Bikes – The History
Aprilia, an Italian motorcycle manufacturing company, is in existence since 1945. Initially, Aprilia used to manufacture bicycles. Subsequently, Aprilia moved on to make scooter and motorcycles of small capacities. Very recently, Aprilia has started producing large sports bikes, such as the 1000 cc V-Twin RSV Mille and the V4 RSV4.
The distinction of setting up Aprilia should go to its founder, Cavaliere Alberto Beggio. He set up a bicycle manufacturing unit at Noale in Italy after the end of World War II. His son, Ivano Beggio took over in 1968 and constructed the first 50 cc Aprilia moped. He named the first series as Colibri, Daniela and Packi. The motocross bike Scarabeo followed in 1970.
Aprilia’s romantic endeavours began in 1977 when Italian racers started winning motocross championships riding on Aprilias. In the 1980s, Aprilia added various models in the Enduro, Trials and Road bikes of capacities between 50 cc and 600 cc.
The 1990s saw Aprilia introduce the first all-plastic scooter from Italy, the Amico. In 1992, it introduced the Amico LK and the two-stroke Pegaso 125. Other scooter models launched by Aprilia in the 1990s include the large diameter wheel scooter Scarabeo with a 4-stroke and 4-valve engine, the Leonardo, the SR, and the Gulliver.
Aprilia then introduced the twin-stroke RS125 and RS250 sports bikes. The RSV Mile, a 1000 cc V-Twin Superbike saw a launch in 1998. It is still the flagship model of Aprilia. The Falco, a 1000 cc V-Twin sport tourer followed soon after.
Foundation of Aprilia
In spite of being a small manufacturer by global standards, Aprilia became very active in the motorcycle racing circuits. In 1999, Aprilia ventured into the World Superbike Championship racing with the RSV Mile. In the year 2000, Aprilia launched the 50 cc DiTech 2-stroke engines for scooters. It improved the mileage and resulted in lower emissions.
The RSV Mille Tuono saw a launch in 2003. This model was similar to the RSV Mille in many ways with the difference being the motocross-style high handlebars. Many motorcycle magazines rated this bike as the best bike of the year.
Aprilia entered the Motocross World Championship in 1976 and started focusing on the Grand Prix Road Racing World Championships from 1985. Aprilia was a noted performer in the racing circuits. It set a world record for the most points earned by a manufacturer in a single season as they acquired 410 points in 2007.
Aprilia earned an excellent reputation in the Superbike World Championship as well with its flagship bike model RSV Mille and the RSV4. Aprilia also entered the SuperMoto World Championship in 2004 and won in both the S1 and S2 classes.
The Acquisition and Expansion
Aprilia became a part of the Piaggio Group in December 2004 after the reorganisation of the Noale Racing Division. With this acquisition, it became the fourth largest motorcycle group in the world with an annual production capacity of more than 600,000 vehicles with an active presence in more than 50 countries.
Aprilia uses some of the best technology on its bikes. Some of the remarkable features present on the Aprilia bikes are as follows.
- Aprilia Dynamic Damping – an electronically controlled suspension system
