Ather Energy was founded by Tarun Mehta and Swapnil Jain in 2013. Headquartered in Bengaluru, the Indian based company currently manufactures two electric scooters S340 and S450. These scooters are currently available for online-sale with doorstep delivery and service. The company has also set-up an electric vehicle charging infrastructure Ather Grid. In 2014, it received funding of Rs 45 lakh from the Technology Development Board under Department of Science and Technology, IIT Madras and Srini V Srinivasan, IIT alumnus, an alumnus of IIT institute, better known for founding Aerospike. Flipkart founders made a whopping $ 1 million investment in the company, as the seed capital. Tiger Global, also invested in the company for the development, testing, production and launch of the vehicles. Two-wheeler giant, Hero MotoCorp invested a colossal $30.5 million in Ather Energy in 2016 and holds a stake of 32.31 in it. Fresh investments were again made by Hero MotoCorp in 2018. A manufacturing unit is under construction at Whitefield, Bengaluru which will have a capacity to churn out 600 vehicles on weekly basis.
