Bajaj Auto is a part of Bajar Group, which is counted among the top ten business houses in India. This group has not only made its mark in the two or three wheeler section but also in the fields of finance, travel, insurance, iron and steel, lightning, and home appliances. The brand ‘Bajaj’ is not only a name in India but also in various other parts of the world including South East Asia, South Asia, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. Founder of the group was Jamnalal Bajaj, who founded it in the year 1926, well before Indian Independence. It was in the year 1942 Kamalnayan Bajaj took over the reign in his hands at the age of 27 years and diversified the group into many manufacturing segments. He also consolidated the entire group. In 1965 Rahul Bajaj became Chairman of the group and at his behest, the Bajaj Auto became an Rs. 120 billion company from a mere Rs. 72 million. It should be noted that Bajaj Auto is not only the second largest company producing motorcycles in India but also the 3rd largest manufacturer in the world. In terms of market value, this company became the twenty-third largest publicly traded company. Per the figures available till March 31, 2013, market capitalization of the company was Rs. 520 billion or US$9.57 billion. Bajaj Auto ranked 1416 on Forbes Global 2000 list.

History of Bajaj Auto

It was on November 29, 194,5 Bajaj Auto was officially born. It started its operations by selling imported 2 and 3 wheelers in India. It was only in the year 1959 that it got the license to manufacture 2 and 3 wheelers in India. In 1960 Baja Auto became a public traded company. 1970 was a landmark year for the company as they rolled out 100,000th vehicle in that year. It was only in 1977 that they sold one lakh vehicles in a single financial year. Their success story saw a steep rise with every passing year. While they sold five lakh units in 1986, they sold a million vehicles in 1995. In fact, it was the same year when Bajaj Auto rolled out its 10 millionth vehicle. 1986 was a watershed year for this automobile company as their image of a scooter manufacturer was successfully transformed to a comprehensive 2-wheeler manufacturer through the introduction of motorcycles.

Product Range

Bajaj Auto’s products range from motorcycles to scooters, cars, and auto-rickshaws. In terms of export items, his company is the largest exporter of three wheelers as well as motorcycles. In terms of the company’s accounts, export accounted for 35% (approximately) of the total sales. Most of the exports were done to African countries (accounting for 47% of the total exports). The most popular brand of the company in Africa is Boxer. The motorcycles that Bajaj Auto is producing currently are Pulsar, Discover, Avenger, Bajaj Platina. It also distributes some of the high-end sports bikes of other renowned manufacturers and some of the renowned brand names include Kawasaki Ninja 650R and Kawasaki Ninja 250R. The financial year 2012-13 the company sold 3.76 million motorcycles approximately of which 2.46 million units were sold in India itself.


Its motorcycles have won many awards over the years. Bajaj Avenger 220, and Bajaj Pulsar won BBC – Top Gear’s Bike of the Year 2010, NDTV Car & Bike Awards’ 2011 Mc of the year up to 250cc and CNBC – Overdrive’s Hall of Pride Awards 2011 respectively.Besides its product range, the company – Bajaj Auto - has won many awards themselves and the most important ones include Frost & Sullivan Super Platinum Award for manufacturing excellence for the years 2006 for its Chakan Plant, ICICI Bank Overdrive Awards’s Bike Maker of the Year in the year 2004, Two Wheeler of the Year award of BBC World Wheels Viewers Choice 2003, and The Most Customer Responsive Company in Automobiles category for the years 2004, 2006, and 2008 on the basis of a survey conducted by Economic Times.
