About Hero Motocorp - The History
The origin of Hero Two Wheelers actually goes back to Hero Cycles, which was founded in 1956 by the Munjal brothers. A year later, it became the largest bicycle manufacturer in India. However, in 1983, Hero Cycles signed an agreement with Honda and this laid the foundation for Hero Honda. The company started operations in 1984 and this paved way for the new-age Hero Honda bikes.
In 2010, Hero Motocorp bought 26% stake of Honda, making it the majority shareholder. This ended the joint venture between the two companies and Hero Honda was rechristened as Hero Motocorp in 2011.
Hero Motocorp has five bike manufacturing facilities in India and they have a total production capacity of nine million. The manufacturing units are located in Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. In Haryana, Hero Motocorp has two plants, one in Dharuhera and another one in Gurgaon.
With the popularity of Hero bikes, it is expected that the brand has a wide dealership network. Presently, it has more than 7,000 dealerships and service centres, which are located in 4 union territories and 29 states.
In the 1980s, Hero bikes were extremely popular as the company launched a series of new Hero bikes that were not just cost effective but also fuel efficient. A flurry of advertising campaigns highlighted the fuel economy of the bikes and this helped Hero bikes sell in plenty.
When the company launched the 100cc CD 100 motorcycle in 1985, it revolutionized the two-wheeler market in India. Then in 1999, it introduced bike users to the CBZ that established a performance benchmark for other two-wheeler manufacturers. Today, Hero bikes are in a class of their own. These are the main reasons that Hero bikes are so popular across India.
In 2001, the company became the largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the world, a position it still maintains. However, it is facing stiff competition and is going out of its way to innovate and offer bike enthusiasts Hero bikes with attractive features.
