About Jawa Bikes – The History
The distinction of introducing the Jawa brand went to Frantisek Janecek when he bought the motorcycle division of Wanderer in 1929 to establish the Jawa Moto Company. The Jawa bike got its brand name from the first two letters of Janecek and Wanderer, respectively. This brand was a rage in the 1950s with the Jawa 350 being the most favoured brand. The 350 Californian was another famous model that made its entry in the 1970s. The typical black and red colours of the Jawa bike were famous all the way from the beaches of California in the West to the New Zealand Islands in the East. After a series of losses in production, a successor company took over in 1997 but continued with the name Jawa Moto.
Jawa has a strong Indian connection with Jawa India producing the Jawa motorcycles in its plant near Mysuru. The bikes manufactured in Czechoslovakia had the CZ emblem on the fuel tank whereas the Indian-manufactured bikes had the letter ‘O’ within the emblem. Some of the top bikes manufactured in India in the 1950s were the Yezdi 250 ‘B’, Jawa 350 Type 634 Twin and the Yezdi 250 Monarch models. This company stopped production in 1996. Subsequently, Mahindra and Mahindra took over in 2016 and signed a licensing deal to launch motorcycles under the Jawa brand in India. They launched three motorcycles, Jawa Classic, Jawa 42 and Jawa Perak. These bikes are manufactured in the Pithampur plant and are the ideal alternatives to the Royal Enfield in India.
Foundation of Jawa
The founder of Jawa, Frantisek Janecek, did not have any experience in manufacturing motorcycles. However, he was familiar with the production techniques. He bought the motorcycle division of Wanderer when the German motor industry collapsed and Wanderer stopped the production of motorcycles. The first model introduced by Jawa was a 500cc motorcycle with a powerful 4-cycle engine. This bike was a reliable one with the Jawa bike mileage being approximately 16 kmpl.
The economic recession in the 1930s saw the emergence of Jawa as one of the top motorcycles of the times. The Jawa 175 was a highly successful model in the 1930s. The 1940s saw the introduction of the Jawa 250/350 motorcycles with the 350 Ogar as the more successful one. The 1950s was the golden period for the company as they exported the Jawa 350 to more than 120 countries in the world. It was also the time when Jawa moved into India and set up a plant near Mysuru.
The Acquisition and the Expansion
In addition to motorcycles, Jawa used to manufacture cars and mopeds. The Jawa 700 and Jawa 600 Minor were two of the best-selling cars from Jawa Moto. Jawa was one of the first moped manufacturing companies to introduce electrical ignition in their mopeds.
In the early 1960s, Jawa invented the automatic clutch for motorcycles. Jawa patented the automatic centrifugal clutch technology and used it for designing the Jawa 250/559 and the 350/360 motorcycles. Jawa Moto produced the Jawa Speedway motorcycles after its amalgamation with ESO in 1962. Jawa Moto closed down its plant in Prague in 1963 and set up a new one in Tynec nad Sazavou in 1964. This new company retained the name and started a line of production of successive Jawa motorcycles such as the 350, 350 Californian, 90 (roadster), 50 (Mustang) and so on. They continued with the production of heavy-duty motorcycles over the succeeding decades with the Jawa 350 OHC and the Jawa 660 Vintage being the latest models in 2017. They also started the development of 1000/1200 motorcycles.
Jawa India introduced the Jawa 353/04 motorcycle in India and designated it as the Yezdi-A type. The successive Yezdi models are still found on the Indian roads even today. Jawa stopped production in India in 1996. In 2016, Classic Legends Private Limited (CLPL), a subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra acquired the license to launch motorcycles under the Jawa brand name. The three launches of the Classic bikes were Jawa Classic, Jawa 42 and Jawa Perak. The Jawa bike specifications of the Jawa Classic and Jawa 42 were similar. CLPL introduced these bikes as a response to the Royal Enfield.
Jawa is also one of the most active racing bike manufacturers in Eastern Europe with its 4-stroke engines having an advantage over other bike engines, especially in speedway racing, dirt track racing and ice racing.
