About Kawasaki Bikes - The History
India Kawasaki Motors Pvt Ltd is a 100% subsidiary of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Limited, a Japanese company. Kawasaki entered the India two-wheeler market in 2009 and initially forged a partnership with Bajaj. However, the following year, in 2010, it set up its subsidiary and began manufacturing its models in the Akurdi facility owned by Bajaj. Here, the brand manufactured its Ninja 650 and Ninja 250 to introduce them to the Indian market.
The superbikes were an immediate success and this resulted in India Kawasaki Motors Pvt Ltd to begin assembly of Ninja 300, ER-6N and Versys 650. While the manufacturing was done by Kawasaki, the marketing and sales and after-sales service were handled by Bajaj Motorcycles.
In 2013, Kawasaki India started marketing, distributing and managing the after-sales service of its super sport bikes, namely Ninja ZX-14R, Ninja ZX-10R, Ninja 1000, Z1000 and Z800 via its own dealers located in different Indian cities. It was the same period during which Kawasaki also introduced the off-road bikes – Kawasaki KLX110 and KLX140 – in the thriving Indian market.
In April 2017, Kawasaki and Bajaj alliance came to the end, with the latter no longer handling sales and after-sales service for the Japanese brand. It is anticipated that this move would help boost the Kawasaki brand experience for customers.
The same year, in July 2017, Kawasaki India set up its own manufacturing plant in Chakan, in Pune. The operation at the plant started in September 2017 and it is hoped that its own manufacturing unit will help Kawasaki build its independent sales and after-sales services across India while helping the brand get a strong foothold in the Indian two-wheeler market.
The Chakan plant currently manufactures and assembles 27 models, including Ninja 300, Ninja 650, Ninja 1000, Z250, Z650, Versys 300, Versys 650 and Vulcan S. The brand also has 30 dealerships spread over India.
Kawasaki India announced that it was looking to source parts through local Indian vendors to help boost Kawasaki motorcycle production and ensure prompt delivery.
