Piaggio & C. SpA is an Italian based vehicle manufacturer which has a global presence including the Indian automotive market. Headquartered in Pontedera, Italy, Piaggio operates in various markets and has facilities as well as manufacturing units across the world. It has four research and development centres and it operates in over 50 countries globally. As of 2014, Piaggio & C, SpA employed around 7,053 personnel and was reported to produce 519,700 vehicles in the same year.

It has a global presence with six industrial sites one of which is located in the home turf Italy in Pontedera (Pisa) which is also the largest production plant from where the company produces two-wheelers, commercial vehicles for the European market and engine for scooters as well motorcycles under for its co-brands Piaggio, Vespa and Gilera.
 The other industrial site is located in Noale, which is better known as the home of Aprilia Racing and it produces Aprilia and Scarabeo two-wheelers from its Scorze facility. The Mandello del Lario (Lecco) has been manufacturing motorcycles for Moto Guzzi brand since 1921. In India, Piaggio has a facility in Baramati, Maharashtra, one of the major states in West India and it also has a plant in Vinh Phuc in Vietnam. Piaggio’s four R&D Centres are located in different locations across the world; it has a facility in Pontedera, Noale, and Pasadena where it has the Advanced Design Centre. Besides, Piaggio also has a presence in California and Boston. The Pontedera site in Italy also houses the Piaggio Museum which was renovated lately and witnessed myriad footfalls all year round. The Moto Guzzi Museum is located in Mandello where the first models produced by Moto Guzzi are displayed. As a part of its expansion plan, Piaggio has set up facilities in various countries globally that has helped the brand expand its reach to emerging and developed markets. On the occasion of its 130th anniversary, the company published “FuturePiaggio, -6 lezioni Italiane sulla mobility e sulla vita” by Jeffrey Schapp, that entails Group’s history and highlights the brand’s philosophy and future prospects.

History of Piaggio

Piaggio & C. SpA was founded towards the end of the 18th century in 1884 by Rinaldo Piaggio. The company was initially involved in producing locomotives and railway carriages. It was in 1917; under the wake of World War that Rinaldo Piaggio entered the aeronautical and military sector. From 1937-1939, the company got its name in the history of the automobile with 21 records to its credit for building aircrafts and engines at its Pontedera. The company started manufacturing trains, nautical fittings, aeroplanes, trams, buses, funiculars, aluminium windows after the company’s management was passed on to Rinaldo Piaggio’s sons in 1940. Enrico Piaggio decided to leave the aeronautical field in a bid to cater to people’s need for an affordable mode of transportation after the devastation of the world war. One of its most successful scooters, Vespa was launched in 1946, which received an overwhelming response from the customers with more than million units produced within ten years of its launch.  Piaggio then built the 1957 Vespa 400, a tiny passenger car and in 1969 it purchased the motorcycle company Gilera. By 1988, Vespa reached 10 million unit mark and still continues to be one of the popular models from Piaggio.

Product Range

Piaggio sells its products under its brands Piaggio, Vespa and Aprilia. It has several subsidiaries which aide in designing, engineering vehicles, manufacturing as well as distributing two-wheelers across global markets. Besides two-wheeled motor vehicles, Piaggio also transacts in compact commercial vehicles and robotics. The two-wheelers and commercial vehicles manufactured by the Italian auto giant is sold under the following brands-Vespa, Piaggio, Moto Guzzi, Aprilia, Derbi, Scarabeo and Gilera.


In the year 2003, Piaggio’s Museum was recognized as the Best Corporate Museum and it also received the Italian prize, ‘Premio Impresa e Cultura’ for its Archives. The company was felicitated the Corporate Art Award by pptArt for its Corporate Museum in 2016. Piaggio has achieved outstanding results in sports with 104 world championship titles to its credit with Aprilia, Gilera, Derbi and Moto Guzi. The German Quality and Finance Institute announced Aprillia as the top Italian innovative company in the scooter and motorcycle sector.
