About TVS Bikes – The History
The TVS Group has a distinguished history dating back to over a hundred years. The distinction of establishing this group goes to Thirukkurungudi Vengaram Sundaram Iyengar (TVS). The first company under this group, TV Sundaram Iyengar and Sons launched Delhi’s first bus service in 1911 under the name of Southern Roadways Limited. After the demise of TV Sundaram Iyengar, his sons took forward the legacy of the company and diversified into various sectors like finance, insurance, automobile sector, manufacturing of auto components, housing, aviation, logistics and so on. Today, this group has about 97 companies with a total turnover of around US$6 billion.
Foundation of TVS
The group company’s foray into the automobile sector started in 1978 with the establishment of the moped manufacturing plant in Hosur. The parent company of TVS Motor Company is Sundaram Clayton, founded in 1962 in collaboration with a British company, Clayton Dewandre Holdings. The TVS 50 was the first moped to roll out of this plant. The moped was an instant success with almost every house in Tamil Nadu having one standing in its porch. A joint venture between Sundaram Clayton and Suzuki Motor Corporation in 1982 saw the formation of the TVS Suzuki. This company started commercial production of motorcycles in 1984. The TVS motorcycles launched by TVS Suzuki included Suzuki Supra, Suzuki Samurai and Suzuki Shaolin.
The Acquisition and the Expansion
India has several pockets of dominance as far as the two wheelers are concerned. The Bajaj Auto Group is dominant in the Western parts of India whereas the Hero group caters to the North Indian population. In a similar vein, the TVS group dominates the Southern states. In 2001, TVS and Suzuki parted ways with the formation of an indigenous Indian motorcycle manufacturing company by the name of TVS Motor Company.
Resultantly, the company had to relinquish the Suzuki name from their motorcycles. TVS India began manufacturing scooters and motorcycles at their Hosur plant. Some of the notable motorcycles launched by TVS India include TVS Victor, TVS Apache, TVS Star City and so on. The TVS Scooty, TVS Zest and TVS Jupiter are some of the popular scooter models on the Indian roads today. Some of the TVS new models include TVS Ntorq 125 and Apache RTR series.
The TVS Company is the second largest exporter of motorcycles in India. Therefore, you see improvements and upgrades in the TVS bikes frequently. There are some TVS bikes new models 2019 waiting for launch as well. One of them is the TVS cruiser bike TVS Zeppelin. There are also talks about the TVS electric scooter launch in 2019 with the introduction of TVS Creon.
The TVS motorcycles are reliable and fuel efficient. These bikes have won awards at various national and international forums, such as JD Power Asia Pacific Awards 2016 and the NDTV Car and Bike Awards in 2014-15.
TVS Motors has also forayed into the racing sector with TVS Racing becoming the first Indian factory team to participate in the Dakar Rally in 2015. TVS Racing partnered with the French motorcycle manufacturing company, Sherco in the world’s longest and most dangerous rally. TVS Racing has won almost 90% of the rally events it participates in. Some of the wins include the FOX Hill Super Cross and the Raid de Himalaya.
The year 2016 saw TVS enter into a strategic collaboration with BMW Motorrad to manufacture the BME G310R. In two years, the Hosur plant rolled out the 50,000th G310R series. In December 2017, the TVS Motors new launch, Apache RR 310 hit the roads. This indigenously manufactured TVS motorbike is a direct competitor to the KTM RC 390, Kawasaki Ninja 250 SL and Bajaj Pulsar.
