Audi Q5 OverviewPositioned between the smallish Audi Q3 and the huge Audi Q7, the Q5 promises to be a great urban SUV. It can handle bad terrain, and won't be too cumbersome to drive in traffic either. Also, given that it looks good too, Audi hasn't had a problem with the competition either.
Back on tarmac, it's docile and boasts car-like dynamics.??While Porsche is readying the Macan (it will be priced higher than the Q5) and BMW has the X3 already, the Q5 enjoys its position, because of its capability as a product, and Audi's well deserved value in the market.
Audi Q5 ExteriorWhile not as striking as the smaller Q3, and certainly not as imposing as the Q7, the intermediate Q5 comes with charms of its own. It looks fresh, the LED treatment on the lights (both headlamp and taillamp), the wide grille up front, and the civilized stance give it some character.
The glasshouse isn't huge, and the slightly sloping roofline give it a sporting appearance.??It doesn't look huge, and that's what makes a big difference. It can gel well in the urban surroundings easily, and when it comes to making a trip off-road, the vehicle won't disappoint either.
Audi Q5 InteriorApart from what you would expect from an Audi, that is high quality interior, robust fit and finish, and a simpler design of the dashboard, there's nothing that would look out of place. The infotainment screen is well tucked inside the dashboard, and looks good. The controls are well placed, and like most Audis, it feels special to be in the Q5.
It's a five-seater, with the rear seat foldable in a 40:60 split. There's no concern regarding space inside the lavish interior, and the boot space is quite generous too.??Although for added storage, there can always be a roof rack added, but given the boot is huge, you might not even need that.
Audi Q5 Engine & TransmissionThe Audi Q5 is offered in three engine options, a 2-litre petrol, a 2-litre diesel, and the range topping 3-litre diesel. The first two are more common because both the 2.0 TFSI and 2.0 TDI offer adequate power for daily usage, and both (like the 3.0 TDI) come equipped with quattro four wheel drive system.
The 2.0 TFSI petrol engine makes 221hp of power and 350 Nm of torque. It gets an 8-speed transmission and is marginally lighter than the two other vehicles here. Both the diesels use a 7-speed S-tronic transmission, and while the smaller 2.0 TDI makes 174hp of power and 380Nm of torque, the 3.0 TDI boasts 241hp of power and a massive torque figure of 580Nm.
Audi Q5 MileageAs expected, it is the 2.0 TDI engine that offers the best fuel economy of 14.16 kmpl (Audi claimed). The 3.0 TDI with more power and torque offers a lower 13.22 kmpl, while the 2.0 TFSI petrol engine's 11.81 kmpl is certainly no match for the other two diesel motors'.
Audi Q5 Braking and SafetyGiven that the vehicle gets quattro four wheel drive system as standard across all variants, Audi has given a great deal of importance to safety per se. But that's not all, there's the Electronic Stabalisation Control, Electronic Differential Control, Antilock Brake System with EBD to keep the grip levels high. There's also an Anti-Slip Regulation feature, which would reduce the spinning of the drive wheels, in case they are not transmitting power to the road.
There's also a plethora of airbags (for both front and rear side passengers) to minimize the injury in case of an accident.
Audi Q5 Performance and HandlingThe whole range of engines is suited well to the vehicle, and the most popular of the lot, the 2.0 TDI does the job well. Apart from delivering good fuel economy, it also makes sure the vehicle doesn't feel underpowered at all. The 9s 0-100 km/h time might not be for the drag-strip, but you aren't going to use the Q5 for quarter-mile runs, are you?
As mentioned above, all variants come with quattro permanent all wheel drive system and 17-inch wheels (only the 3.0 TDI gets 18-inchers). The four wheel drive system makes the Q5 a very stable and usable vehicle across a lot of terrains in all seasons. It can do a little bit of off-roading too, which means that should you take a detour, you shouldn't find yourself stuck. Although it's always nice to gauge the condition before venturing out in the slush, for instance.??The vehicle is good enough to scale the length and breadth of the country, traveling on a variety of terrain. And it won't disappoint either.
The best part about it is that the Q5 won't struggle at most of the road conditions. It might not be as nimble as the Q3, or as imposing as the Q7, but it's great at being what it is: a midsize SUV.
What do we think about Audi Q5?There are a lot of products in the market that shout for attention, displaying a probable lack of substance. The Audi Q5 is the exact opposite. It is quite capable but doesn't give a clue about it, until you get behind the wheel.
The simple but effective styling, the range of good engines, and a wide array of options makes the Audi Q5 so special. The 2.0TDI is the choice of the lot. It has a good amount of power, and doesn't drink too much of fuel either.
?It's comfortable and spacious inside as well, which means if you are going to be chauffeured around in one of these, you won't have any problems either. Add the good amount of stability and safety options the vehicle offers, and you have a winner in your hands.
Audi Q5 CompetitorsIf looking at SUVs alone, it's the BMW X3 that's closely matched to the Audi Q5. Both offer simple designs, but come out as impressive products in their own ways. The executive sedans, viz. the E-Class, the 5-series, and Audi A6, can also be considered, if you want a vehicle that's lower to the ground.
