BMW Cars - The Inception

Established in 1916, BMW AG is headquartered in Munich, Bavaria. The company has many production facilities in countries like Germany, China, Brazil, India, the United Kingdom, South Africa, and the United States. BMW India is a subsidiary of the BMW Group and its headquarters are located in Chennai. In 2007, the company started its plant operation in India. Since its outset in India, BMW has introduced a wide range of activities and facilities, including a parts warehouse located in Mumbai and a training center in Gurgaon/NCR, and has developed a wide dealership network across the country.

Initially, BMW cars were imported as CBUs, but later with the commencement of operations, the local production started with the BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series. Other brands that are also marketed under the BMW Group India are Mini and BMW Motorrad, and internationally, Rolls-Royce as well. But before this, a long history has been set by the brand, which is not known to everyone. This history dates back to even before the company officially got its name and started with the production of new BMW cars.

Foundation of BMW

Originally, BMW was created with three different German companies - Rapp Motorenwerke, Bayerische Flugzeugwerke, and Automobilwerk Eisenach. Rapp Motorenwerke has its history of manufacturing aircraft engines. After the departure of the founding member Karl Friedrich Rapp in April 1917, the company was renamed as Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW). The first product launched by BMW was not an automobile but an aircraft engine, BMW IIIa. This engine was good with its fuel efficiency along with high-altitude performance, and hence well known and helped in the expansion of the company with its demands.

The First Acquisition

In 1994, British Rover Group was declared under the BMW’s umbrella, where this group consisted of brands like Rover, Land Rover, MG, and Mini. After six years, the company decided to sell off some of its brands due to some loss-making brands like Rover, but retained Mini and launched the new Mini in 2001.

The first ever X Series came into being in 1999 with the introduction of the BMW X5 that further gave way to a smaller X Series model, BMW X3, in 2003. In 2001, BMW introduced for the first time the 7 Series with an automatic transmission. In 2004, the 1 Series hatchback came as a new entry-level model by the brand, replacing the 3 Series as BMW's entry-level models.

What’s behind BMW M and i series?

Apart from the company’s other subsidiary brands, BMW also owns sub-brands, like BMW M and BMW i, where the term “M” in BMW M stands for Motorsports. This division was established in 1972 with just 35 employees, and the main reason for this division was the company’s interest in the racing programs that were quite popular in the 1960s and 70s. The first BMW car introduced under the M-badging for the public was the M1 and was revealed at the 1978 Paris Motor Show. With this model, the brand started to add high-performance models to its lineup. BMW cars with M-badging did not just get tuned-up engines, but the other parts of the cars, like the transmissions, suspensions, aerodynamics, interiors, and exterior, were also modified for better performance. All the BMW cars with M-badge were finally tested at the company’s private facility at the famous Nürburgring racing circuit.

Another division that BMW holds is the “i” sub-brand that was founded in 2011 to develop and manufacture hybrid and electric vehicles. Initially, BMW showcased both the i3 all-electric and the i8 plug-in hybrid in their concept forms at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, as they had already planned to introduce the i3 hatchback in Germany in 2013, followed by the launch of BMW i8 in 2014 in Germany. The main markets of these two products are the United States, Germany, Norway, and the UK.

BMW Car Photos

BMW cars are known for their performance, the signature ‘kidney’ grilles and the crown headlamps that speak of the company’s legacy, which BMW continues to offer to its customers. The exterior gets a touch of boldness with the creases running on the bonnet and from the sides, through its shoulder line all the way back to the tail. Nonetheless, the interior of the BMW cars is filled with luxury and sportiness, and with its iDrive system, BMW cars get easy to interface with. Once you get behind the wheel, you will not find any daunting reason to just sit and rest, but you will once your foot on the accelerator pedal.
