BMW Z4 OverviewBMW cars are known worldwide for their sheer driving pleasure. Driving is their genesis for the development of any product with the blue and white propeller badge. In every corner of the world, enthusiastic drivers swear by the Bavarian cars and their rear wheel drive magic. And what’s better than a drop top roadster to enjoy a Beemer’s true attributes of both fun and agile handling.
BMW Z3 was one of the first true luxury roadster when launched way back in 1996. Soon it became popular among the entry sports car segment because of its brilliant RWD powertrain and ownership excellence of BMW. It was the first modern mass-produced roadster. The Z in Z3 originally stood for Zukunft (German for future). Its popularity was so huge that it became the first non-British car for James Bond in the movie GoldenEye.
However in recent years, cars like Mercedes SLK, Audi TT and Porsche Boxster have made the survival of BMW Z series a bit scary. The latest model Z4 is a very competent car in every respect. The design echoes a true roadster feel with long bonnet and tiny rear overhang and boot. Headlights incorporates traditional corona rings from BMW family but in a more rakish and stretched head units. Big and nosy kidney grille sums up the pounding and quite sporty front fa?ade.
Side profile of Z4 is unmistakably of a roadster with fast sloping roof and big 18” tyres. Further, the metal finished side scoop along with BMW insignia gives a very upmarket and modern feel to the car. Rear end is subtle but still manages to turn heads in a haste. Large sweeping tail-lamps along with beefed up boot lid makes Z4 a very stylish car indeed. The retractable hard top have great fit and finish and that too without compromising on NVH levels. It takes about 20sec to carry-out the roof up/ down drama.
BMW in India is offering Z4 roadster with a single engine option i.e. a 3L petrol one with 306HP and 400Nm of max torque. Like any other BMW, power is sent to the rear tyres with almost zero turbo lag whatsoever. Handling too is very brilliant with nicely balanced steering wheel and throttle response system.
Overall, BMW Z4 is easily the best entry level sports car in India currently on sale, especially because of the massive price hike of the ongoing Porsche Boxster model and the lack of luster in Audi TT and Nissan 370Z coupe.
BMW Z4 ExteriorBMW has managed quite dexterously the rightful way of uplifting the design of Z4 even with keeping the BMW family elements into it. Large curvy headlamps looks good and well-settled in a ready-to-knock and wide-bodied face. Detailed cluster with BMW’s iconic corona rings really makes it a very modern look. Further, big kidney grille upfront with brushed metal finishing makes the face of Z4 nothing short of gorgeous, but with a welcoming sense of German functionality and flawless engineering.
Side profile is nicely balanced as well with tiny glasshouse and large propounding 18” alloy wheels. The design and material of wheels looks and it is top-notch and truly fits the styling of the Z4 roadster. Sharp and precise body creases along with miniscule wheel arches shouts low-slung brawny stance. With the roof down too, Z4 looks equally stunning. The brilliant fit and finish of the panels and proportionate muscle distribution makes it one of the best looking Beemer on sale.
Rear end follows typical roadster ethos with compact and characterful dimensions. Newly designed taillights are bright and bulky and dominates the tail. Twin exhaust pipes with scooped up bumper further imparts a sporty character to the Z4.
Overall, the design is quite masculine and it’s quite hard to resist for almost any kind of customer. Z4 is stylish, well-engineered, modern and most important of all it’s not a hairdresser’s car.
BMW is offering the Z4 in eight exciting colors – alpine white, black sapphire, crimson red, deep blue sea, glacier silver, mineral grey, mineral white and orion silver. A new electrified orange color named Valencia orange is available only with DPT (Design Pure Traction) trim line.
BMW Z4 InteriorThe interiors of Z4 is a work of art. Quality and craftsmanship of the materials used and manpower invested in making of the cabin can be seen clearly. Fine quality soft-touch plastics and brushed metal inserts throughout the cabin creates a very posh aura throughout the cabin. Dashboard is a typical BMW affair with some fine edgy alterations and racy layout in order to justify the image of a roadster.
The whole blueprint of the dashboard is new and distinctive with classy looking wooden trim and an array of circular gauges. Instrument pod is simple and clear, just like any other Beemer. Steering wheel and drive pedals are placed precisely for comfortable and engaging driving experience. Further, driver seat offers tons of adjustment and therefore finding a driving G-spot is not an issue. Seats are large and super comfy and offers respectable under thigh support. Cabin space is generous in its class with lots of cubby holes around the cabin. The quality of hard roof is good and it offers decent insulation as well. However, with the hard roof up, cabin seems to feel a bit too claustrophobic.
Equipment list is enormous with feature like dual-zone AC, lumbar support, electronically adjustable seats with memory, sport seats and leather steering wheel, BMW iDrive with navigation and parking system and voice control system being standard.
The DPT package includes interior trim finished in classy metal weave. Further, alcantara leather (orange and black) is on offer too for a more modern and sporty feel in the cabin. Boot space is sufficient (smaller than the Mercedes SLK) with roof up with a partition tray to restrict the luggage input for roof retraction. Sadly though, the roof has to go up if one wishes to access the boot, unlike Audi TT soft top.
Overall the cabin is truly delicious with classical driver focused ergonomics and BMW’s trademark levels of spit and polish finish.
BMW Z4 Engine & TransmissionBMW Z4 is available in India with a sole 3L TwinPower petrol engine option. The six-cylinder engine comes fitted with twin turbochargers for better throttle reflexes and minimum turbo lag. Further, the double-Vanos system alters the valve timing and injection system outputs as per desired driving mode.
Engine churns out a massive 306HP of pure power at 5800 rpm and max torque of 400Nm starting at as low as 1300rpm further continuing up to 5000rpm. The power delivery is simply brilliant with almost no lag whatsoever. Power is generated linearly and neatly all the way up to the very redline. Moreover, the best bit of the 2979cc gem is the near-perfect exhaust note. A sweet whining burble at every downshifts and a mechanical crackle whenever floored down. This symphony of mechanical and electrical trickily defines the soul of Z4 as a true roadster.
A seven-speed sport automatic double-clutch transmission (yeah, that long) is mated to the engine for effortless gear variation and better fuel-economy. One clutch each for even and odd gear trains shifts the cog with minimum time-lag and almost no interruption in traction. For sportier feel, paddle shifters are mounted onto the steering column. This manual form of shifting enhances the driving ecstasy in the BMW Z4 roadster.
Regenerative braking system along with BMW EfficientDynamics elements builds up a very respectable amount of fuel-economy of 10.37kmpl for the Z4. However, being a rev-happy product, an average enthusiastic drive with bring the real figures to about 7.5-8kmpl.
BMW Z4 Braking and SafetySafety in Z4 is as good as it gets in this range. Front and side airbags (driver and passenger both), ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), CBC (Cornering Brake Control), DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), DTC (Dynamic Traction Control), Roll-over protection system, Runflat tyres with range indicators, Three-point seat belts and lastly crash sensor with side-impact protection all are standard affairs.
BMW Z4 Performance and HandlingHandling and ride quality is outstanding, especially on fast chicanes and switchback roads. Massive tyres provides tons of grip and control even at high speeds. However, the electric nanny is still the party spoiler as it restricts almost any tyre smoking and rubber shredding action. Steering is razor sharp with quick and conforming feedbacks. A great mix of comfort, agility and stability is what defines the attributes of the Z4’s chassis. Near perfect 50-50 weight distribution aids too to deliver a well-planted ride. However, the only grouse is the spooky wobbliness of cabin under high load due to the convertible platform. DSC and CBC tightens the cornering lines effectively and therefore making high-speed maneuverers a piece of cake for the Z4.
What do we think about BMW Z4?BMW Z4 is a perfect everyday sports car for this side of 1 crore Indian rupees, with zestful dynamics, fabulous drivetrain and pleasing cabin as its USPs.
Over the past years, demand for sports as well as luxury cars have seen tremendous growth here in India. People have started to take their vehicles more than just a mode of transport and as a lifestyle product. As an extension of themselves. Therefore, investment in well-priced automobiles is no longer a sparse ritual in India.
BMW has always been the focal point of the luxury market in India. Almost all of their products are loved and respected by customers from any age and business domain. And with Z4 roadster, the portfolio of the German giant has reached the zenith spot in terms of desirability (with likes of Aston Martins and Jaguars).
Z4 is a perfect entry-level sports car with plenty of power and panache to satisfy any reasonable need of an enthusiastic customer. Further, its renowned build quality and creature comforts makes it a very friendly everyday car. Engine is mated to a clever gearbox which can adapt accordingly for city, highway and track usage. Suspension setup is a bit stiff but just to offer some authentic driving thrills and yet it still delivers a smooth ride.
The cabin too is generously equipped and carries quality material with top-notch finish. Safety features are zillions too which when combined with the BMW’s reliability stature constructs a great deal for any automotive transaction.
Overall, with a starting price of about 69 Lakhs INR, BMW Z4 is a great value-package of delightful mobility. It is a fun to drive roadster with added perks of luxury and brand value. Z4 commands a classical roadster appeal that its competitors fails to deliver. Further, the magnificent drive train and pleasing interiors makes a pretty strong case for the Beemer. And seriously, who buys a roadster to shifts packages in the boot and therefore the practicality glitch is more or less livable.
So if you want a useable everyday sports car and doesn’t want to sacrifice on the comfort or conveniences then BMW Z4 is tailored made for you. It’s among the very few true BMW on sale in India, with a fistful of automotive holy trinity of looks, power and well-engineered drivetrain.
BMW Z4 CompetitorsBMW Z4 faces the biggest threat from its German rival Mercedes Benz SLK. On one hand, the Beemer is fun to drive, nice looking and a refined piece of engineering. Whereas the three pointed star offers comfort, practicality, better ride quality and equally good looks. With now improved powertrains and equipment trims the Merc is still a strong deal with the only Achilles heel being its lousy driving credentials.
Next is the Nissan 370Z. With 333HP of power, it is marginally better than the BMW. However, it’s not really a roadster or even a convertible, it’s a coupe and therefore a not so decent choice w.r.t its sticker price. Z4 is rather good looking, better equipped, efficient and way-modern in refinement and ownership experience. Same goes for the Audi TT coupe as well. A well-engineered car with refined powertrain but it somehow lacks a sensuous appeal of a roadster. And with only 208 horses on tap it is rather unexciting when compared to the BMW Z4.
Porsche Boxster however is a driver’s wet-dream. The little 911 is gorgeous, perfectly-balanced and have more than enough power for Indian roads and customers. Sadly though, the starting price of near about 90 Lakhs makes this true-roadster a toy for some few privileged ones only.
