Chevrolet Sail Overview

Chevrolet Sail is a proper sedan version of U-VA and doesn’t have the truncated look of the sub-four-metre Maruti Swift Dzire, and is a complete package in itself. The muscular contours give Sail a classy three-dimensional trend setting form, a feature that sets it apart in the category. Loaded with safety features, superior boot space, luxuriously spacious interiors and powertrain options make Chevrolet Sail a tempting city car. The mid-size saloon developed by General Motors for the developing markets is a practical vehicle. After a successful run in different parts of the world during its first generation from 2001-2009, the second generation was developed in 2010 and launched in India in 2013. The car is priced at a very competitive scale for a sedan.
Chevrolet Sail Overview
Elegant finish and broad shoulders apart, the muscular physique of Sail gets glamour to the grace with its elegant wide-angled jewel effect tail-lamps and wrap around head-lamps. The Chevrolet Corvette inspired Dual-Cockpit Interior Design with a refreshing ‘Rising Sun’ instrument cluster, luxuriously blended two tone interiors with highlights in silver and chrome, define the overall appeal and charm of the Chevrolet Sail that commands respect and envy both at the same time.

Chevrolet Sail Exterior

The Sail features a more modern looking design and seems as a much better package as well. It easily overcomes the biggest shortcoming of looks in Chevrolet U-VA. The Sail has a rather safe design in the form of dual-port grille that looks handsome which may not be futuristic looking but something that will appeal to all. The Indian version of the saloon has a strong dose of chrome to make it more up-market and it will work as we love chrome!

Chevrolet Sail Interior

The interiors of the Sail look well-built and it offers enough space and good storage space. A modern car in terms of features, Sail pampers the passengers in the way it drives. The lift-type door locks are a bit old-school too, and you’re also likely to rue the absence of steering-mounted audio controls even on the top LT spec cars. Top variant Sails do get an audio system with Bluetooth audio streaming and telephony, however.
Chevrolet Sail Interior
Front seat comfort on the whole is good (though there’s no driver seat height adjustment or dead pedal), and visibility is nice too. Rear seat occupants will like the space on offer. There’s good knee room and headroom is also sufficient for anyone under six feet tall. What’s nice is that Chevrolet has softened the seat back cushion. Sail scores quite well in terms of space for smaller items, with a total of six bottle-holders (including two in the rear centre armrest) and a large recess just ahead of the gear lever.Chevrolet Sail Interior
The Sail come across as a pretty interesting product. It looks smart, has a spacious cabin and a useable boot, and really impressive ride quality. In diesel avatar, the Sail seems well suited to city use

Chevrolet Sail Engine & Transmission

The Chevrolet SAIL is powered by superior and spirited SMARTECH engine options -revving to go. The class leading 1.3l SMARTECH Turbo-charged Diesel Engine mated to the premium F17 transmission is a powertrain to be enjoyed with the assurance of superior fuel efficiency, slick gear shifts and seamless power delivery. The 1.2l SMARTECH Petrol Engine delivers a superior driving experience and performance with refined power delivery. The Sail is available in both petrol and diesel variants. The petrol engine is a 85 bhp 1.2-litre unit. The diesel engine is the now famous Fiat sourced 1.3-litre Multi-jet unit.
Chevrolet Sail Engine & Transmission
The diesel develops a healthy 77 bhp at 4000rpm, it’s smooth and has good low-end grunt. The model has been tuned and changed to suit the Indian market which will definitely appeal to the customers.

Chevrolet Sail Mileage

Chevrolet Sail mileage is one thing that makes is a very fuel efficient and economical car to own. The diesel variant outshines the petrol variant when it comes to mileage.

Chevrolet Sail Braking and Safety

Chevrolet Sail is loaded with safety features including remote keyless entry, dual airbags, ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution) and Child-protection rear door locks. Air bags cushion the front seat occupants and provide protection during high speed front impact. The car is a Safe-Cage Design with 3-point force dispersion structure with in-built crumple zones and side impact beam in doors provide enhanced safety for cabin occupants. The centrally located fuel tank fortified by cross-structures is an added protection in case of side impact. Made of sterner stuff, well it’s true.

Chevrolet Sail Performance and Handling

The Sail’s steering requires minimal effort at parking speeds, but once you venture on highway and it lets you down completely. A firm grip on the wheel is required at all times as even the straight-line stability is also not all that good. The petrol car’s steering does offer a little more by way of feedback, but even then it’s not really entertaining to drive. There’s plenty of roll around corners too. But if not for handling, you’ll definitely like the Sail for its ride quality. The suspension easily absorbs the worst of our potholes

What do we think about Chevrolet Sail?

The under 4 meters cars gives the Sail duty exemptions and the entry level petrol variant costs just under Rs 5 lakh which makes the car a hot property. The car offers adequate safety equipments as well and makes for an excellent urban car.

Chevrolet Sail Competitors

The Chevrolet Sail entry-level sedan has been priced very competitively amongst its rivals and despite its larger size, its introductory pricing is very similar to that of the smaller Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire. The Chevrolet unmatched 3-year service package makes the deal all the more sweet. The Sail is up against some very stiff competition from the Maruti Swift Dzire, Mahindra Verito, Toyota Etios and Tata Manza.
