Ferrari California T OverviewAutomobile industry seldom gets the privilege of seeing an icon in the making. Very few manufacturers manage to be show stoppers from the very minute they enter the race. Every car they launch stands as an ode to the automobile industry for they encapsulate what is so good about cars. For these cars take automobiles to unseen territories. What started off as a transportation requirement ended up being an amazing experience with factors such as joy, rush, visual beauty and sheer delight of owning such vehicles coming into picture. Ferrari is one such company and Ferrari California T is one such vehicle that every automobile fanatic dreams about.
The roots were plain simple, launched in Paris Motor Show 2008, the California took the world by storm by turning out to be something way more than a concept. The vehicle itself has a lot to its credit since its launch. It was the first front engine Ferrari featuring a V8, it was the first to have a seven speed dual clutch transmission, multi link rear suspension and direct petrol injection. It is also first in another innovative, ground breaking folding metal roof. While the convertibles till then relied on a surface which would retract and come out, mostly made of some morphed version of carbon fibre, Ferrari changed the game all together.
The Ferrari California over the years was updated and upgraded quite and few times with Ferrari California T being the latest upgrade. Launched in February 12 2014, the California T offers a new engine, improved gear system and an improved speed specification. The Ferrari California T is also expected to reduce its emission pollution by 15%.
Ferrari California T ExteriorLeave it to Ferrari to take something as subtle as retractable roof and make the most of it by making it metal and standing true to the word Roof. With the hood closed it takes an expert to recognize the roof to be retractable. The roof gets down in mere 14 seconds and as that time can be used in adding on to the scene by increasing the gravitas of the rider.
Now that the most important aspect of the vehicle is covered, let us check the other trivial factors of the exterior design. The front fascia gives look at what futuristic vehicles are going to be based on. The curves and the way each and every line comes, connects and creates harmony is truly amazing. The front grill has its sides cut by the arc that extends itself from the side profile through the wheel arches and the lower part of the headlamp. And just on the other side of the cut created on the front grill, is the position for fog lamps, ever so concealed. The front bonnet comes with air vents extending their design to improve aerodynamic efficiency too. The side profile features the perfect structure for curves with the front extending along the wheel arches, the mid section with the doors looking a bit skimmed and the rear boot, housing the retracted roof, bulged again. This makes the car look like something created right out of a designers sketch book.
The star shaped alloy wheels with their five spokes add on to the design beauty of the vehicle and at top speeds, they seem stationary as the spokes trace back to their position in a matter of fraction of seconds. The rear section of the Ferrari California T seem to be more on the rounder platform since they house perfectly blended round tail lamps. The Ferrari stallion on the rear end below the indicator light shines bright with power. The twin exhaust pipes on either end of the rear fascia throttle the vehicle even forward to higher speeds.
Ferrari California T InteriorFerrari California T is undeniably one of the best interiors Ferrari has ever come up with. Sure most of its features seem standard and norm as other Ferraris but this car is unique because of the convertible factor. When a car is convertible, the interiors are as good as exteriors because they are openly exposed and need enough care in detailing and environmental resistance to live up to the Ferrari name.
The entire instrument panel and notification cluster of the Ferrari California T are driver centric. The paddle shifters and basic driving controls are positioned on the steering with the display screen in the middle for the media as well as navigation requirements. The leather seats could be custom made while ordering the car. The leg room is ample in the front row and definitely gives out a true sports car appeal. The air conditioning vents are circular and provide a unique mix of vintage and modern appeal to the vehicle. Nothing could fit in the rear row other than a baby seating add on probably. The section could however be used for luggage purposes.
The space in the rear is filled with the retractable metal roof. Since the roof is metallic and closes the surface pretty solidly, the interiors enjoy a best in class air conditioning no matter what the environmental features. This helps the car in creating its unique blend of a typical sports car and a convertible with ease. The vehicle also comes with a decent head room in the front. All in all, the interiors of Ferrari California are definitely a treat.
Ferrari California T Engine & TransmissionThe Ferrari California T comes with a 3.8 litre bi turbo V8 engine. It is capable of generating a maximum output of 552bhp at 7500rpm and the torque can reach peaks of 755 at 4750 rpm in the seventh gear. The engine is a 90 degree design and though insignificant for performance, the colour assignment of the vehicle brings out the charm of the vehicle to its maximum.
The bore and stroke of the vehicle are 3.41 inch x 3.23 inch. The unit displacement is 29.4 cubic inches while the total displacement is 235.25 cubic inches. The car reaches the 100kmph mark in mere 3.6 seconds. The maximum speed the vehicle is reported to reach is 315.4 whopping kmph.
Ferrari California T MileageMileage is really not something a person riding Ferrari would be concerned about and this is due to the basic fact that Ferrari is not made for mileage delivery, it is made for high performance. Ferrari California itself was awarded Best Performing Car over the years on various platforms. The mileage would amount to 9.523kmpl on average. The notable thing about the car though is its reduced CO2 emissions. The 250 gm CO2 emission per kg prove that Ferrari did its best to give out the best performance.
Ferrari California T Braking and SafetyFerrari California T sports carbon ceramic Braking system. This enables the rider to have complete control over the vehicle despite the speed their Ferrari California T is being ridden in. The dimensions of the front system is 390 x 34 mm while the same on rear is 360 x 32 mm. The vehicle also comes with CST with F1 TRAC system which helps the vehicle have complete control thereby enhancing the stability and traction. Other than these the usual ABS, airbags etc. come as a norm anyway.
Ferrari California T Performance and HandlingThe real issue is not about creating a car that rides fast, it is about creating a car that can handle the speed it is created to ride in. And Ferrari did a commendable job in that department. By using F1 based flat plane crankshaft along with the twin scroll turbines, the car manages to have virtually zero turbo lag. Overall mass and inertia have also been cut down enabling the car to reach this Zero turbo lag state easily.
What do we think about Ferrari California T?Supercars can never get better than this. With its metal roof, it gives the riders the actual pleasure of riding a regular Ferrari at the same time retracts its roof to give a complete, mind blowing convertible riding at speeds closer to that of an eye blink.
Ferrari California T CompetitorsFerrari California T has a key contender from its own stable, the Ferrari 458. But other than that, Lamborghini Gallardo and Lamborghini Aventador stand as key contenders too. But Ferrari packs what neither of these do, pride of housing the first metal retractable metal roof. Other than that the car packs one of the most powerful engines in the world at this very moment. Not to forget the globally envied services of Ferrari given to their privileged customers.
