Fiat Abarth Punto Overview
Longing to transform its image in the exponentially growing Indian market, Fiat brought its performance driven brand Abarth to India. One of the first models chosen for India under Abarth badge includes Punto Evo that gets a powerful soul while cosmetically it hasn’t been altered much to differentiate the standard model. That said the standard model despite offering a good dose of power lags behind competition that outruns the former in term of efficiency, hence the question that arises here is whether this low economy returning, high on power hatchback will be able to sustain solely on the basis of performance.
This is a question we will answer later in this review, but before we jump to the conclusion let us explore what all modifications Abarth has conferred upon Punto Evo to make it a part of its family. As mentioned above, cosmetically, it hasn’t been revised much, but yes Abarth has made some styling additions while retaining the originality relating to Punto Evo hatchback. As you take a look at the car you will notice generous use of chrome all around the exteriors.
Alloy wheels on both sides come with a neatness that tries to make do for the considerable space left between wheel arches and tyres. Yet another flaw as we may say in the hatch is the lowered ride height which measures 20 mm lower at 155 mm. Step inside the cabin to be greeted with the familiarity of standard Punto Evo. Just like outside, interiors too bear scorpion badges. What actually sets it apart from the standard Punto Evo and the rest of the hatchbacks in the segment is a really powerful engine promising glut of power. Disc brakes all around ensure that the roaring power pushing the vehicle forward can be curbed well, hence enhancing the ride experience.
Fiat Abarth Punto Exterior
Nothing much has changed on the outside; it remains the similar Punto Evo with a sportier stance, thanks to the additions Abarth has made. Chrome is used amply on the outside, thick chrome surrounding outlining the fog lamp housing in front as well as rear looks rich, besides, the radiator grille also gets a hint of chrome, even the outside door handles and tail pipes in rear are chrome accented. This ups the overall appeal of the exteriors.
16 inch Scorpion alloy rims are twined on the 195/55 R16 tyres, but what doesn’t go with the sporty image of the hatch is the gap between the wheel arches and tyres that looks little awkward. Despite lowering ride height by 20 mm, it doesn’t make much good to the empty space drawing attention towards the flaw. Body graphics and ORVMs in contrast colour add to the sporty tinge of the hatch.
Fiat Abarth Punto Interior
Cabin is the same as in the regular Punto Evo, Abarth has not inculcated any preeminent change on the styling front. In comparison to the rivals in the segment, the cabin appears a tad dated. Even the features have been carried over from the 90 PS version. Abarth has sealed in their badge on the aluminium pedals, steering wheel etc inside the cabin. Steering wheel is a little stiff and does not allow flexibility to adjust to the driver’s convenience hence emerging one of the flaws in the cabin. Seats get new upholstery featuring red and yellow stitching. Besides, cabin also gets sporty steel-foot decals.
Fiat Abarth Punto Engine & Transmission
Power is one of the pros of Abarth Punto Evo that borrows engine from Linea. In order to rev up power, Abarth has made significant modifications so that the 1.4 litre, four cylinder, T-Jet petrol engine oozes out more power making it the most powerful hatch in its segment hence setting a benchmark for cars to follow, even the performance oriented version of VW Polo featuring the additional moniker GT is not able to match with the power figure of Abarth Punto Evo. That said the engine is capable of outputting pinnacle power of 145 Bhp of power along with top torque of 21.57 kgm. Abarth Punto Evo transmission option includes the five-speed manual gearbox.
Fiat Abarth Punto MileageFuel economy on offer is not as good as offered by other vehicles in the segment; however the company did not even intent to work on the economy numbers, it focused more on the performance than a pocket saving engine that yielded imposing economy numbers. According to tests done at ARAI, the fuel efficiency delivered by Abarth Punto Evo is around 16.3 kms in a litre.
Fiat Abarth Punto Braking and Safety
Disc brakes are fitted all over providing robust stopping power. Vital safety fitments like anti-lock-braking system and electronic brakeforce distribution are also embedded in the vehicle. Airbags are housed in front for driver and co-passenger.
Fiat Abarth Punto Performance and Handling
Courtesy the 1.4 litre T-Jet engine, the vehicle propels to 100 kmph from stand still in less than 10 seconds. Fiat claims that the time taken to reach 100 kmph is around 8.8 seconds which is by far the least in its segment. Power on offer makes Punto Evo an easy to drive hatch that does not require much effort to rev up. Handling and ride quality both as descent, over all if this performance oriented version of Punto will not let you down. Moreover, the suspension has been firmed too in order to bolster the added power.
What do we think about Fiat Abarth Punto?
If performance is all that you look for Abarth modified Punto Evo is your car. It remains largely same on the inside which seems a little dull, exteriors are sporty and the new additions on the outside make it appear enchanting but the void between tyres and wheel arches spoils the overall look. Engine is indubitably powerful and vouches satiety in terms of power supply with no dearth for power. The five-speed manual does the trick; power sent to front wheels grunts it giving right start. Colour contrasting body graphics are one of the pros, but mileage is low which could be a letdown in a mileage obsessed market like India. Price is again high, and as we had mentioned in the beginning, will anyone opt for a car that is heavy on pocket and demands high running cost, frankly answer to this question is still uncertain given the new product from Fiat wearing Abarth badge is a robust hatchback that vouches a power-packed performance.
Fiat Abarth Punto CompetitorsWith abundance of power propagated by the 1.4 litre petrol engine, Punto Evo by Abarth can bully rivals to kneel down when it comes to power generation. This in turn works as strength for the powerful hatchback that accelerates to 100 kmph from nil within 10 seconds time range unlike any other car in the segment. The Indian market lags behind as far as powerful hatchbacks are concerned in B segment. However, in this lean segment; Abarth Punto Evo will face off with Volkswagen Polo GT TSI that is available in both petrol and diesel engine options. However, Abarth Punto Evo gets petrol engine only skipping the diesel powertrain. Dimensionally, Abarth Punto Evo is a larger metal mass that gets a longer wheelbase too implying a bigger cabin. Possessing 15 mm increased ground clearance, Polo GT offers a better ride height which is one of the major flaws in Punto Evo. On the outside, Punto may appear sportier with the new additions made to the hatch but interior styling and equipment list is better in the German make. As mentioned above, the 145 Bhp power is way more than the 103.26 Bhp Polo GT TSI making it emerge shaky in front of Punto Evo. But as for gearbox options, Punto Evo comes with a manual tranny while Polo GT gets seven-speed dual clutch gearbox. In terms of performance, Punto is hands down a better option but it comes with a hefty price tag which may pinch those who look for imposing fuel economy as this one is not a very frugal offering.
