Fiat Punto Evo Overview
Why Fiat India had been struggling to pull in decent sales figures is because of a couple of reasons. First, the lack of vehicles in their arsenal, second, deteriorating older models, and lastly, ineffective after-sales network. Now, the company in a bid to revive the older 'good' times and bring freshness in its stable, launched the facelift version of the Punto hatchback, being christened as 'Punto EVO'. It is placed amidst the premium hatchback segment with an intention to polarize buyers that desire luxury and performance. The latest iteration of Punto or the Punto EVO is striking, upmarket and advanced than the phased out version in every aspect.
Fiat has sourced the name 'EVO' directly from the hatchback that it sells in international markets, especially Europe; Although, the design cues are pretty different from the European hatch, and nevertheless it is quite peculiar in its own way. The hatch has already been handed over to the requisite company dealers and the deliveries are expected to commence almost, instantaneously. Fiat Punto EVO is being launched in both the petrol and diesel fuel trims. Each guise has three similar variants - Active, Dynamic, Emotion; except for the top of the range 'Sport' trim that comes with only diesel fuel trim. Fiat hasn't opted for mechanical changes in the hatch and has retained all the engine options from the predecessor. Interiors, too, are quite upgraded and resemble to the ones that elder sibling and compact sedan Linea boasts.
Fiat Punto Evo Exterior
Embodied with exquisite Italian craftsmanship, the Fiat Punto EVO bears no resemblance to the out-phased version of the hatchback. The new hatch features stretched out 'Reindeer' Follow Me headlamps to provide better visibility. At the front facade, it gets an all new front bumper and receives a lot of chrome treatment with the integrated fog lamps. The radiator grille is also tweaked in order to make it more prominent and premium by adding chrome to it.
The car gets larger air-dams this time around and the bonnet is also modified as now it flaunts four lines along with a windscreen washer. Smartly enough, Fiat has placed the company emblem over the redesigned radiator grille in order to ooze oomph and bring exclusiveness. Did we forgot to mention that number plate is also brand new, which compliments well the overall front facade and raises the ambiance of the Punto EVO.
The side profile is almost identical to the older hatch albeit the 16-inch alloy wheels and upgraded wing mirrors with LED blinkers. The bigger alloys are first-of-its-kind in the whole segment and appear quite captivating. At the rear-end, there are a few substantial changes in form of updated tail lamp cluster, redesigned body colored rear bumper and inclusion of LED lights. The bumper gets chrome inserts which are accompanied by the fog lamps and reverse lights. The rear windscreen is a tad smaller in size and adorns a defroster with a wiper. Furthermore, the top-end trim Sport also gets a roof mounted spoiler to back its image of a sportier variant. Fiat Punto EVO comes with 6 vibrant metallic colors - Glitterati Gold, Hip Hop Black, Tuscan Wine, Minimal Grey, Pearl White, and Magnesio-Grey. There also exists a non-metallic color in form of Exotica Red.
Fiat Punto Evo Interior
The interiors for the new Punto EVO have been directly sourced from the Linea sedan. It gets an all new dashboard and this time, the most commendable thing is that the quality of the materials used is top-notch. It possesses a dual-tone shade while the front panel is done in glossy black color. Additionally, the new Punto EVO is also available with all new black sporty interiors, but it is limited to the top-end Sport variant only. There comes a tilt steering wheel with evenly poised audio controls on it. The instrument panel is also tweaked and it now displays two round shaped meter with chrome accents. The tachometer and trip meter with distance to empty also make their way in the instrument panel. There is an automatic A/C with rear vents which ensures cooling for every occupant; sadly, it comes only with the top-end trims. The entry-level and mid variants boast a manually controlled air conditioning system with foot level rear air circulation. However, features like 12V power socket, digital clock, programmable speed limit buzzer, real time mileage indicator, seat belt warning light etc. to name a few, are standard across the whole line-up.
The new Punto's inner cabin spaciousness is praise-worthy and it offers adequate legroom, shoulder room, and headroom. Especially, the second row legroom is immense. The newly designed seats are comfortable and fatigue-free all throughout. The convenience of height adjustable driver's seat is also introduced in the Punto EVO. The rear seats are 60:40 foldable which helps in further extending the 280 litres of boot space. Also, Fiat has carved out the storage spaces inside the cabin quite wisely as every door has a bottle holder. The company has presented the top-end trims in both the guises with an integrated CD/MP3/FM player with Microsoft Blue & Me, Voice Commands, Bluetooth, USB, and AUX-in connectivity. In addition, it is also bestowed with speed sensitive volume control which is of great use while city driving. Although, the entry-level variants do have a provision to install the audio player later. Overall, the interior is eye-soothing and pleasing but company should have made the base and mid variants a bit more potent, lively and influential by equipping with more comfort and convenience features, that are visible in top-end trims.
Fiat Punto Evo Engine & Transmission
As known, the Fiat Punto EVO is available in both petrol and diesel guises. The petrol variants come loaded with two different engine options as the base and mid-level variants adorn a lighter engine while the top-end trim in-houses a heavier and much powerful engine. Precisely, the base variants don a 1.2L Fully Integrated Robotized Engine (FIRE) which has SOHC valve configuration. This 1172cc, four-cylinder, 8V, MPFI enabled motor generates a maximum power output of 67bhp at 6000rpm and a peak torque performance of 96Nm at 2500rpm. It is being paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. On the other hand, the top-end variant has a 1.4L FIRE mill with DOHC valve configuration, under the hood. Being a 1368cc, four-cylinder, 16V powertrain, it delivers 88.7bhp at 6000rpm of top power and 115Nm at 4500rpm of peak torque. The power is transferred to the front wheels of hatchback enroute the same 5-speed manual gearbox. The company has missed out on an automatic variant and, it might hurt it.
Talking about the diesel trim, Fiat's 1.3L Multi jet diesel (MJD) is equipped with every variant but it has been tuned effectively to get two different power outputs. The entry-level and mid variants comprise of the aforesaid 16V, DOHC, four-cylinder motor and it churns out a power output of 74.9bhp at 4000rpm and maximum torque of 197Nm at 1750rpm. It is mated to the company's conventional 5-speed manual transmission. The top-end variant too sport the same engine but, however, returns larger power. It has a highest power output of 88.7bhp at 4000rpm and a torque performance of 209Nm at 4000rpm. It is coupled with the Fiat's traditional 5-speed manual gearbox. Fiat's 1.3L MJD is a gem of an engine and it can also been seen with several other cars in India. It is also the pick of the engine amidst the three used with the hatch.
Fiat Punto Evo Mileage
As evident, the hatch comes with 3 different engine options; hence, the mileage figures differ too. The base and mid-level petrol variants consisting of the 1.2L engine returns a not-so-impressive 15.8kmpl while the top-end variant, donning a 1.4L engine gets 14.4kmph which, by no means, is acceptable. On the other hand, the fuel efficiency of diesel variants is satisfactory and competent. The 1.3L MJD while paired with the base and mid-variants, yields a fuel economy of 21.2kmpl while with the top-end variant, it goes on to deliver a decent 20.5kmpl. It can be said after viewing and analyzing the aforementioned ARAI certified mileage figures that Fiat hasn't excelled in this domain.
Fiat Punto Evo Braking and Safety
Fiat Punto EVO has a decent combination of ventilated discs at the front and drum brakes at the rear. The braking system responds almost instantaneously as the brake pedal is pressed. The highly coveted duo of Anti-lock Breaking System (ABS) and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) also serves as the secondary braking system in accordance with the primary breaking system. Except for the base variant, the ABS with EBD is present with every variant. The company has also blessed the hatchback with dual front airbags which also have passenger side deactivation system and early crash sensors. However, they are offered only with top of the trim variants. Additionally, there are 3-point ELR seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters for added safety of the occupants in the top-end trims. Front seat belts are also height adjustable with the top-end trims.
Automatic door lock, Door open indicator, Fire prevention system (FPS) etc. are a few features that are standard with the entire variant range. Looking at the above safety features, it sends out a loud message that the base variant is almost impotent and if you need safety and assurance, you need to pay those extra bucks to fetch them. At the security front, Fiat Punto EVO has remote keyless entry, central door locking and immobilizer with rolling code to eradicate any chances of vehicle thievery and keep an individual fully aware.
Fiat Punto Evo Performance and Handling
Fiat Punto comes equipped with a 3-spoke tilt and hydraulic power steering wheel. It is outstanding and follows the driver's fingertips to perfection. The hatch has front suspension in from of Independent Wheel Suspension with McPherson Struts, Helical Coil Springs, Double Acting Telescopic Dampers and Stabilizer Bar while the rear one is Torsion Beam, Helical Coil Springs and Double Acting Telescopic Dampers. Even, the best-in-class ground clearance of 185mm is awesome and takes care of the speed breakers, potholes and bumps. To be honest, handling and performance is the USP of this car and it is a complete driver's car. As for performance, the top-end petrol variant with 1.4L FIRE engine achieves the 0-100kmph mark in 15.99 seconds while clocking a top speed of 165kmph. The diesel top-end variant with 90PS power crosses the same 0-100kmph barrier in 14.33 seconds with a top speed of 165kmph.
What do we think about Fiat Punto Evo?
"Old wine in new bottle", this proverb justifies and explains the all new Punto EVO in brief. The soul and heart of the car is same altogether, only the changes have been made to the body, i.e. exteriors and interiors. Hence, the drivability is wonderful as the predecessor and is the biggest strength of this hatchback. Top-end trims are delightful and boast some of the most contemporary and sophisticated features present in today's cars in the segment. However, one might feel disappointed and perplexed after looking at the base variants, comparatively!
Fiat Punto Evo CompetitorsFiat Punto EVO is placed in the B+ segment of cars in the country and it will be pitted against the likes of segment leader Maruti Swift, recently launched 2014 Volkswagen Polo, all new Hyundai Elite i20 and yet-to-be-launched Tata Bolt. It is the most economical of all its foes and offers impeccable performance, at least with the top-end variants. Although, the lackluster and insipid base variant may drift the buyers towards its counter-parts.
