Ford Fiesta OverviewFord India has been selling the Fiesta sedan throughout the planet since the late nineteenth century and it, undoubtedly, remains to be the best marquee of company's entire lineup. As for India, it made its debut in 2011 which was the fifth generation of this coveted sedan, globally. And now, the company has rolled out the sixth generation Fiesta which is more aggressive, feature-rich and powerful than the pre-facelift model. This refreshed Fiesta was also showcased at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo and there also it was recieved quite well by the auto lovers. The Blue Oval American automajor has launched it in diesel guise only with a total of three variants - Ambiente, Trend, and Titanium.
The Fiesta sedan has gone under the hammer quite rigorously and thus comes with with an array of cosmetic changes both inside and out. Despite being a mid-sized sedan, it has been versed with the firepower of a premium sedan which it flaunts with utter nonchalance. Ford has eradicated the Titanium + variants this time around from the Fiesta lineup in order to simplify it and keep the price competitive. It may not be the best all-rounder sedan but it is certainly the best Fiesta and much more advanced, up-market and attractive than the previous iterations. The company has made special efforts in order to present it as a quintessential safety vehicle by incorporating ABS, EBD and Drive-side Airbag as standard feature.
Ford Fiesta ExteriorFord India has executed multiple changes in the exteriors considerably well which accounts for its enigmatic and voluptuous appearance. The massive trapezoidal air dam which was the glory of previous generation Fiesta has made way for the all new hexagonal grille which is inspired heavily form the Aston Martin cars. It is complimented well by the five lean chrome bars, adding the much required elegance in the sedan. Beneath the front grille, there is number plate and below it there are thin air dams. The sedan also gets twin fog lamps in the cutouts near the air dams which further enhance its sporty character.
Also, the bonnet has been morphed and adjusted a bit in order to accommodate the newly designed sleek, laser-cut wraparound headlamps. As we go sideways, there are the tweaked ORVMs and the wheel arches that have been fitted with 15' star shaped alloy wheels (top-end variant only). In the base and mid variant, these alloys are replaced by the conventional steel ones with wheels caps . At the rear, the company has installed an all new tail light cluster along with the slightly modified bumper. The Titanium variant, being the top-end variant of the entire line-up, also has rain sensing automatic wipers and guide me home automatic headlamps. The sedan would now come with two additional colors in addition to the earlier ones - Golden Bronze and Smoke Grey.
Ford Fiesta InteriorInside the cabin, nothing has changed much except that Ford has concentrated more on improving the quality of the plastic. The dual-tone black beige shade is eye-soothing and the inclusion of chrome further pushes the bar. The dashboard is retained from the predecessor but improvement is clearly visible in the color scheme. The centre console and instrument panel is done in a new glossy black trim with illuminated switches. The seats come with headrests integrated in them and are of premium fabric upholstery.
The rear seats can be folded completely which further helps in extending the boot space. The sedan has plenty of space to store the small belongings in the form of cup holders, glove box compartment, bottle holders, magazine pockets etc. to name a few. If your phone's battery has died up, looking to charge it and searching a accessory power socket, viola! there are two in it. Driver's seat is height adjustable, providing extra comfort and convenience during long runs.
The USP of the interior cabin is the Ford’s latest voice-operated Sync system that comes with the indispensable features like Emergency Assistance and AppLink. As known, the emergency assist automatically dials the emergency number in the case of any accident and mishap; it has already proved its mettle with the compact SUV EcoSport. Similarly, the Applink accommodates some particular applications of the phone to display on the Fiesta's infotainment system. Both these features can be quite handy in opposite circumstances, providing immense assistance. In addition, the sedan comes loaded with MP3-compatible music system with six speakers (four front and two rear coaxial) which supports AUX and USB connection for external music devices and audio-streaming. The sedan comes with a boot space of 430 litres which is sufficient to swallow a decent amount of luggage. However, sadly, ford hasn't been able to get rid of the poor legroom in the back seat cordon and it is still quite congested at the rear seats.
Ford Fiesta Engine & TransmissionSince, the American autogiant has launched it in diesel avatar only; hence it has preferred to go with the tried and trusted 1.5-litre DuraTorq diesel engine. It has refrained from making any changes to this highly advanced motor and the sedan returns the exact power and torque figures of 90 bhp at 3750 rpm and 204 Nm at 2000 - 2700 rpm, respectively. Basically, being a 4 Cylinder, 8 Valve (2 Valves per Cylinder), In-line SOHC TDCi motor, it is constructed of aluminum and displaces 1498 cc.
It is coupled with the company's conventional 5-speed manual gearbox which transfers the power to the front wheels of the sedan and all the possibilities of an automatic transmission go in vain. Though, the maximum power output and torque performance is similar to the previous model but the company has tuned the engine effectively to obtain higher fuel efficiency than before, without hampering the performance.
Ford Fiesta MileageThe Ford engineers have tweaked and re-tuned the 1.5-litre DuraTorq motor appreciably well and have been able to extract out an fuel economy of 25.01 kmpl (ARAI Specified) which is second to only best-in-segment Honda City's 26 kmpl. Earlier, the sedan used to offer 23.5 kmpl with the previous version but this time the company has been successful in exceeding it to 25 kmpl, thus gaining more by 1.5kmpl without lowering down the performance factor. At most, it may go down to 20kmpl at the overcrowded and thick city traffic, which, also is hugely admirable and acceptable.
Ford Fiesta Braking and SafetyFord Fiesta comes with an advanced braking system that features ventilated discs as front brakes and self adjusting drums as rear brakes. This primary braking system works impeccably in accordance with the secondary braking system of ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution). Also, there are dual front airbags in the top-end and mid variants whereas the base variant is limited to just driver side airbag.
Additionally, for the sake of safety pf occupants, there are Energy absorbing bumpers, Crumple zones, and Door reinforcements. On the other hand, in order to ensure protection from thieves and lock-pickers, the company has incorporated several security features like Central locking, Remote programmable key entry with greeting lamps, Child lock, Engine immobilizer etc. to mention a few.
Ford Fiesta Performance and HandlingAlthough Fiesta has least powerful engine in its segment but still provides an enjoyable drive. It features an Electric Power Assisted Steering with Pull Drift Compensation Technology which helps in maneuvering the vehicle quite comfortably through narrow and congested roads. Independent McPherson Strut with Coil spring & Anti-roll bar enabled front suspension and Semi-independent twist beam with twin shock absorbers filled with gas & oil accounts for the real suspension. Both of these further makes the drive further effortless. As for the acceleration, the Fiesta crosses the 100kmph barrier from standstill in a mere 12 seconds while clocking a top speed of 175kmph.
