I am looking at buying a petrol hatchback as my running is around 500kms monthly. Which car suits me best in Delhi between Hyundai Grand i10, Maruti Swift and Ford Figo? I like the Figo, the best but I’ve heard complaints regarding its poor mileage.

Since your running around is very less at 500 kilometers a month you should definitely go in for a hatchback with a petrol engine only. The price for Ford Figo petrol starts from Rs. 4.5 lakhs and goes up to Rs. 6.28 lakhs for the manual transmission vehicle while the automatic transmission Figo is priced at Rs. 7.27 lakhs while Maruti Swift on the other hand starts at Rs. 4.75 lakhs and goes up to Rs. 6.36 lakhs for the top end Maruti Swift ZXi. Hyundai i10 petrol starts from Rs. 4.86 lakhs and goes up to Rs. 6.06 lakhs and it also offers an automatic variant which is priced at Rs. 6.80 lakhs. All the prices are ex-showroom New Delhi. From this you can first shortlist whether you want to go in for automatic transmission or manual and also, what is your budget. Only once you know your budget can you compare the models that fall within the price range of your choice.
However, talking generally, Hyundai Grand i10 and Maruti Swift have a displacement of 1197cc while Ford Figo has a displacement of 1196cc. In terms of features, the Figo features rear defogger in its top end variants along with front fog lamps etc. Inside, there is driver seat height adjustment feature in the Titanium and Titanium plus. Features like ABS and EBD are also available in the top two variants. Driver airbag is a standard while passenger airbag is available across the range except in the base variant of the Figo. Hyundai Grand i10 gets front fog lamps in all the variants except base and rear defogger in the top three variants. In this car also driver airbag is standard while passenger airbag is available in all except the base and the second lowest variant. ABS is available only in the top end Asta (O). Maruti Swift gets front fog lamps in all variant except base while ABS and airbags are available as an option in most variants and are a standard in the top end. Overall Figo is considered to be a value for money product which offers a compliant drive with a suspension that is tuned to give comfort. The built quality is definitely lighter than what one would like and the rear headroom is limited. Hyundai Grand i10 on the other hand is a more contemporary package with best in class interiors. The cabin space is slightly better in this vehicle and the petrol engine is very peppy. Finally, coming to the Swift, this hatchback has a snazzy style with refined engine. The fuel efficiency is pretty good and the drive is nearly effortless. The boot however is pretty small.
The mileage of Figo is around 17kmpl while Hyundai Grand i10 can deliver 17.9kmpl and Swift offers around 17.8kmpl. In the longer run, Hyundai and Maruti work best on the Indian roads because these two companies understand what we look for and they tune their cars to offer that. For instance, the cost of maintenance for a Maruti would be the lowest followed by Hyundai while Ford will have a higher cost. In terms of running costs, Maruti and Hyundai would once again prove to be cheaper in comparison to Ford. However, Ford offers a brilliant engine, comfort and features which at some place or the other Maruti and Hyundai end up compromising on.
The complaints which you have heard regarding poor mileage are only due to the fact that in Delhi a vehicle is not able to perform well given the traffic conditions and jams etc. A person ends up wasting fuel just by standing in queues with the AC in on and this leads to deterioration of the mileage and this will happen in all vehicles. Ford will not give you much to complaint about. However, you should test drive all of the three to get a clearer picture.
