About Honda

The MNC “Honda Motor Company Limited” of Japan was primarily known for its manufacturing in the field of motorcycles and automobiles. Since 1959, Honda has been the largest manufacturer of motorcycles around the world, measured by volume; Honda is the largest internal combustion manufacturer around the world, each year it produces 14 million numbers of internal combustion engines. Honda became the 2nd largest manufacturer of automobile of Japan in the year 2001. In 2011, after Volkswagen, General Motors, Toyota Motor Corporation, Hyundai Motors, Ford Motors, Nissan Motors and PSA, in the world the was the eighth largest manufacturer of automobiles. Honda was Japanese first manufacturer of automobile to unveil a luxury dedicated brand car called “Acura” in the year 1986. Apart from its core motorcycles and automobiles manufacturing business, amongst others Honda also involved in the manufacturing of marine engines, garden equipments, power generators and personal watercraft. Honda had released “ASIMO” robot in the year 2000, with their involvement in robotics research/artificial intelligence since 1986. After the “GE Honda Aero Engines” establishment in the year 2004, Honda has also entered into aerospace and scheduled launch of “Honda HA 420 Honda Jet” in the coming year 2012. The 5% of its revenues, Honda invests it in department of “Research and development”.      

From the young age itself, Soichiro Honda, the founder of Honda had so much of interest in motorcycles and automobiles. At the Art Shokai garage, he was working as a mechanic, where he turned the cars to participate in races. With the finance from acquaintance in the year 1937, Kato Shichiro Honda founded the “eastern sea precision machine company” (Tokai Seiki) which made 4 piston rings working at the garage. Tokai Seiki got the contracts to supply the rings for pistons to Toyota after some initial failures, but the contract lost due to its products poor qualities. Without being graduated, after attending the school of engineering, and to understand better about the about the processes of control for quality of Toyota, he visited many factories around Japan; by 1941 using automated process which could employ wartime unskilled laborers, Honda was successfully able to produce mass piston rings accepted by Toyota. At the starting of World War II, soon after the company getting 40% stake of Toyota, the ministry of industry and commerce, was given to Tokai Seiki and Soichiro Honda as the senior director of management, by getting denominated from company’s president. By assisting in the production automating of propellers for military aircrafts of other companies, Honda also aided the efforts of war. The cultivated personal relationship with the Toyota, Japanese Imperial Navy and the Nakajima Aircraft Company would be the post war period’s instrumentation. After war, on the month of October in the year 1946 the “Technical Research Institute” of Honda was founded with the working of 12 men in an area of 172 square feet shack, they built the 500 engines of Tohatsu surplus war radio with the engine specification being two stroke 50 cc and sold the improvised motorized bicycles. With both engine and frame, the complete motorcycle of Honda came in the year 1949 with the Model D. By the end of 1964, Honda Motor Company in becoming largest manufacturer of motorcycles in world, it took short period of time for its transition.


Honda’s first automobile production was the mini pickup truck T360, which went for sale on the month of August in 1963. This truck’s engine was powered by a 356 cc displacement gasoline engine of straight four. The first sports car production of Honda was the S 500, which comes with rear chain wheel drive points to motorcycles origins of Honda. Honda expanded its product line over the next few decades and expanded its exports and operations to various countries around the world. Honda introduced the Acura brand in the year 1986 to the American Market in gaining the ground in the market of luxury vehicle. The headquarters of American Honda motor company is at Torrance in California and at Markham in Ontario, the Honda Canada Inc has its headquarters, and their division of manufacturing is based at Alliston in Ontario. Around the world with some major companies, Honda has created joint ventures, Dongfeng Honda and Guangzhou Honda in china, in Malaysia with Boon Siew Honda and in Pakistan with Honda Atlas. Following the tsunami on the month of March 2011 and Japanese earthquake, Honda announced its plans of halving the UK plants production.



Accord , Civic , Fit, Legend, CR-Z, CR-V, Insight and Odyssey’s two versions are some global lineup of Honda. To cater to different markets and needs of worldwide, early proponent vehicles were developed, the lineup of Honda varies by country and exclusive to that region, the vehicles may feature. The Ridgeline, which is the first uni body light duty truck of Honda and Honda Odyssey minivan are the latest few examples. Both were primarily designed and engineered, produced in North America. The five door Honda Civic hatchback is another exclusive model sold in Europe.


If you trace back the ambitions of Honda in the manufacturing of automotive, the 1963’s T360 model comes to picture and a for the market of Japan, a Kei car truck was built, followed by the 2 door Roadster, in 1963 it introduced Honda S 500. The Honda L 700 which is a 2 door commercial delivery van built in 1965. The Accord is not the first sedan 4 door car of Honda, it is the Honda 1300 which is powered by 4 cylinders air cooled gasoline engine that came in the year 1969. At international level the hatchback Civic gained wide popularity. In the year 1972, the N 600 was replaced by the Civic and air cooled N360 is replaced by a smaller sibling.


By offering delivery van, small pickup and sedan platforms on a shared chassis to compete in the segment of Kei car, Honda’s efforts represented the Honda life. The novel approach of Life Step Van, didn’t got the initial commercial success, comes with a large cargo area, behind the engine there sits a front passenger, flat roof, liftgate at back and it utilizes the engine which is installed transversely with a powertrain of front wheel drive. After the World War II Honda entered into the manufacturing of automobile, where Nissan and Toyota are some manufacturers from Japan, before the World War they had heritage, it appeared that compared to other Competitors of Japan, Honda did things little differently. Designed and developed by Honda, the Civic is a car which comes under the category of compact cars. The Civic, under the nameplate of Japanese manufacturer Honda, it is the continuously running second largest car in North America, opposite to 1968’s rival Toyota Corolla. Along with Prelude and Accord, the Civic comprised Honda’s vehicles, which were sold until the 1990’s in North America, when the lineup of models was expanded. The Civic has become more upmarket and larger, having gone through changes in several generations, and it is placed between Accord and Fit.


To compete with Toyota Pirus, the Honda produces CR-Z, Insight and an electric hybrid vehicle called Civic. To meet the emerging markets demand for hybrids and small cars in the US,  Honda increased its production in 2008. To keep factories boost and busy car output, the company shuffled the production in US, while building sport utility vehicle and fewer minivans, as sales of light truck fell. Even though, the light duty Ridgeline made its first entry into pickup segment, in 2006 it had won Motor Trend magazine’s “truck of the year” award. The redesigned Civic in the year 2006, won the magazine’s “car of the year” award, giving double rare win for Honda of Motor Trend Honors.


From previous year’s 14.8% of total sales, it is reported that Honda’s plans to increase sales by 20% more in Japan in hybrid segment in the fiscal year 2011. 

More than from any other automakers, five of the top ten most fuel efficient cars of United States Environment Protection Agency’s from 1984 to 2010 is from Honda. Those five models are such as 1986 to 1987’s Honda Civic Coupe HF which offers 55 mpg in US; 46 mpg in Imp combined and consumes 5.1 liters for 100 km running, 2000 to 2006’s Honda Insight which offers 64 mpg in imp combined and 53 mpg in US and consumes 4.4 liters fro 100 km running, 1994 to 1996’s Honda Civic Hatchback VX which consuming 5.5 liters for 100 km run, gives 52 mpg and 43 mpg in imp combined, and in US respectively, Honda Insight of 2010 offering 41 and 40 mpg in US and in Imp, consuming 5.7 liters for 100 km run and Honda Civic hybrid of 2006, giving 42 and 50 mpg in US and in Imp and consumes 5.6 liters for 100 km run. For the consecutive seven years, the ACEEE has rated the Civic GX as America’s greenest car.


Motorsports of Honda

Like superbike racing, motorcycle grand prix and in other racing motorsports event, Honda has been participating actively.

In the year, with Ronnie Bucknum at the German Grand Prix, for the first time Honda entered as a constructor into the formula one. At the Belgium grand prix, Honda scored its first point with the addition of Richie Ginther in 1965 to the team and it scored its first ever win at the Mexican Grand Prix. With driver John Surtees at the Italian Grand Prix in the year 1967, Honda saw its next win. At the French Grand Prix, Jo Schlesser was killed in the year 1968 in a Honda RA302. This tragedy in racing, coupled with their difficulties in selling automobiles in commercial vehicles in the US, that year from all international motorsports events, it prompted Honda to withdraw.


After 1965 years learning, at the French Formula Two championship in the year 1966, Honda dominated the race in the hands of Denny Hulme and Jack Brabham. In that year’s season, as there was no European championship, this was Honda’s top F2 championship. As supplying engines to the team Ron Tauranac’s Ralt, Honda returned to F2 in the 1980’s early. For their earlier involvement, the cars of Brabham were designed by Tauranac. Again they were extremely successful. For Indycar racing use, in a related exercise, a “brabham Honda” turbo engine was produced by the Engine developments company of john judd. At Pocono for Rahal in 1988, it won one race.


With the another team partner, the spirit which is a formula two racing team, in the year 1983 Honda reentered to formula one, before abruptly switching to Williams in 1984. In the 1990’s early and 1980’s late, the cars engines which were powered by Honda won six formula one consecutive constructors championships. In the year 1986 and in 1987, Williams won the F1 crown. Again in 1988, Honda switched its allegiance. In the years 1988, 1989, and 1999 and in 1991, the McLaren which was the new partner of Honda won the title. At the 1992’s end, from formula one Honda withdrew.


In the year 1994, as a works supplier  Honda made its debut at CART IndyCar World Series. At first, the engines were far from competition, with consecutive six driver championships the company powered after the development. The efforts of Honda were transferred to its rival IRL IndyCar Series I the year 2003. The cars which were powered by Honda, overwhelmed in 2004, by winning 14 IndyCar Series races out of 16, it dominated in IndyCar Series, which included Indianapolis 500 and claimed the Rookie of the year title, Drivers championship and manufacturers championship of IndyCar Series. Including the Indianapolis 500 championship races, Honda became the sole engine supplier in 2006 for the IndyCars Series. With its own team, Honda returned to formula one during 1998. After the death of Harvey Postlethwaite, who is a technical director of its racing team, the project was aborted. As an official supplier of engine to Jordan Grand Prix and British American Racing, instead Honda came back to participate in racing events. At the 2005’s end, before buying the outright of team, in 2004 Honda bought BAR team’s stake, becoming a constructor again since 1960. Honda’s driver Jenson button won the 2006’s Hungarian Grand Prix.


On the month of December 5th in 2008, Honda announced that with immediate effect due to the global economic crisis of 2008, it would exit from formula one. Ross Brown, who was the team principal, bought the Honda team and renamed it as Brawn GP and Mercedes GP subsequently. Honda became in 2010’s British Touring Car Championship as an official works team. 

Alternative fuel and electric vehicles

Natural compressed gas vehicle

The Honda civic GX is the commercially available natural gas vehicle, which is built purposefully, is available in parts of United States. The Honda civic GX which appeared in the year 1998 as a civic LX, which is factory modified as civic LX that is designed to run on compressed exclusively natural gas. Just like a contemporary Honda Civic LX, the car drives and looks, but on gasoline it doesn’t runs. The environmental protection agency of US rated the civic GX as the cleanest internal combustion burning engine across the world.

To the Los Angeles city, the car was first leased in 2005, through the trained certified dealers of factory, to the public Honda started to offer GX directly for servicing the GX. Before that, for purchasing new civic GX, the eligible were only fleets. Making it the second state, in New York the civic GX was released in the year 2006, where the car can be purchased by directly by consumer. Flexible fuel car

In the 2006’s late, for the Honda fit and Honda civic, the Brazilian Honda Subsidiary launched versions running on flexible fuel. Its vehicles were running as similar to other flex fuel vehicles of Brazil, on any blend of E20 E25 gasoline and E100 hydrous ethanol. In order test the preferences of market, initially the car manufacturer decided to produce the engines for flex fuel vehicles to a limited share, about 28% of models of fit and civic production to 33%. Also, the vehicles of flex fuel version sales price were higher compared to gasoline versions vehicle, costing 650 USD for fit and 1000 premium USD for fit models. Into the market of Brazil, Honda launched the Honda City which is its third flex fuel vehicle.

Electric hybrid car

Honda launched its first ever hybrid electric car in commercial segment into the US market, in the 1999’s late, which was sold there and Honda insight, introduced one month before the Toyota Prius’s introduction, initially it went for sale pricing 20000 USD. From 2000 to 2006, the first generation produced insight had an economy of fuel of about 70 mpg in US gallon and 84 mpg in Imp, consumed 3.4 liters of fuel for 100 km run, it became at that times most fuel efficient car ever produced. The insight’s total global sale amounted to around 18000 vehicles only.      

On the month of February in 2009 at its home nation, Honda launched the generation second insight, and released to the US market on 2009’s April and to other markets in the same year. On the month of 2010’s February in Japan, the Honda CR Z sales began, becoming in the market as third electric hybrid car of Honda. Hydrogen fuel cell car   

Honda motors on 2008’s June in Japan in Takanezawa, produced the FCX Clarity, which is first assembly line to produce hydrogen fuel cell hybrid vehicle, which is most efficient than a electric gas hybrid vehicle. This vehicle combines oxygen and hydrogen from an ordinary air, for an electric motor to generate electricity.

No pollutants would be emitted from this vehicle, water and heat are only it’s by products. Over electric gas hybrids, the FCX clarity has advantage that to propel itself it doesn’t uses internal combustion engine. It employs a lithium ion battery, like an electric gas hybrid vehicle for assisting the fuel cell at the time of acceleration and through regenerative braking; it captures the energy, thus the efficiency fuel is improved. Throughout the developed countries, due to the lack of stations for filling hydrogen, the production volume of this vehicle is kept low. In groups of 150, the vehicles will be released by Honda. In the US market for fuelling this type of vehicles, though stations number is still limited, California is the only state which has such kind of infrastructure. It would cost more for building such kind of stations, costing USD of 1.7 million for each station for fueling H2, the California Air Resources Board has granted just 6.8 million USD.

Market of Honda in Japan

In the year 1978, Japan’s automotive manufacturer Honda created Honda Verno for diversifying their sales distribution channels. With a more sporting nature and standard equipment content of higher class, Honda with its established products, sold this vehicle to a higher level. The Honda prelude, which is Honda’s new compact sports car, coincided with establishment of Honda Verno. To the stores of Honda Verno, Honda Quint, Honda Ballade and Honda Vigor were added later.

In the year 1985 more channels such as Honda Primo and in 1984 with Honda Clio were created by Honda, as the sales progressed. The traditionally associated dealerships with Honda before 1978, the Honda Clio sold products like the Honda Accord, and superminis Honda Capa along with other products of Honda such as scooters, motorcycles, equipments of marine, portable generators, farm equipments and portable generators, and kei car Honda today and Honda Civic, which is sold by Honda Primo. When Cilo and Honda Primo began operations, a tradition of styling was established, in that in their rear bumper, a license plate at rear was installed in all products of Verno, and while in Clio and in Primo products, which had its installed license plate at rear trunk lid and for minivans on rear door. Efforts at international

On the internet in the year 2003, Cog advertisement was released by Honda. Honda engineers made a Rube Goldberg Machine to make this add, which was made entirely from Honda Accord Touring car parts. Filmed in Argentina, Japan and New Zealand, a two minute advertisement panoramic “The Impossible Dream” had been released by Honda on the month of December in 2004 that illustrates dream of founder to build high performance vehicles.
