  • Overview Honda City Overview

The new headlights, front fog lamps, foldable ORVMs with turn blinker, sunroof, chrome door handles, shark-fin antenna, alloy wheels and several other styling elements reflect the premium class of the car. With a longer wheelbase, Honda City offers more cabin space than before. The sedan comes integrated with eight-speaker stereo system with CD player, Aux-in and Bluetooth support, a climate control unit with front and rear passengers, rear parking camera, power outlets at rear seats, a five-inch LCD display, an instrument cluster with the ‘Econ’ light setting, a start-stop button, a touch-screen panel, and several other advanced features.
    Honda City Overview
This time, Honda is more focussed on fuel efficiency and has introduced Honda City diesel, which delivers a class-leading mileage of 26 kmpl (ARAI certified). The sedan shares both its petrol and diesel engines with the compact sedan – Amaze. The 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine delivers a peak power output of 98 bhp and a torque of 200 Nm. This power unit is offered with a six-speed manual gearbox only.
    Honda City Overview
The City petrol comes boosted with a 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine, which can be bought either with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed automatic transmission. It offers a maximum power of 117 bhp with 146 Nm of torque. On the fuel efficiency front, the City petrol leads its class and offers a whopping 17.8 kmpl and 18 kmpl of mileage with manual and automatic transmission, respectively. In terms of drivability, handling and safety, the fourth-generation Honda City has an upper hand as compared to its rivals. With low maintenance cost and cheaper spare parts, the City proves to be a worthy, economical deal. Available in five trims (E, S, SV, V and VX), the Honda City costs between Rs. 7.42 lac and Rs. 11.10 lac (ex-showroom, Delhi).

    Honda City Overview
  • Exterior Honda City Exterior

The City is based on Honda’s new design theory of “EXCITING H!!!,” which is known as Sleek Crossmotion. Honda’s new design language comprises three basic elements- High Tech, High Tension and High Touch, which represent innovative aspect, striking design, and fine texture and polished surface, respectively. The fourth-generation City shares a great resemblance with its predecessor. The length (4, 440 mm) and width (1, 695 mm) of the car have remained unchanged. However, the height and wheelbase are stretched upto 10mm and 50mm, measuring around 1, 495 mm and 2, 600 mm, respectively. The “arrow-head” front fascia looks very refreshing with redesigned headlights, front fog lamps and foldable ORVMs with turn blinker. The side profile is managed by prominent side crease, chrome door handles, a sunroof and alloy wheels.
    Honda City Exterior
The wheels and the 175/65 R15 size of tyres are borrowed from its elder sibling. However, tyres feel very skinny and disproportionate. Its rear hasn't received much alteration, but the new shark-fin antenna adds more style to its personality. The Honda City will be offered in six vibrant shades: Golden Brown metallic, Urban Titanium Metallic, Crystal Black Pearl, Alabster Silver Metallic, Carnelian Red Pearl and Taffeta White.

  • Interior Honda City Interior

Honda City is bigger, sleeker and richer from inside, as compared to its predecessor. The top-end variants of the car get an eight-speaker stereo system, while the mid and base variants get a four-speaker music system. Both the multimedia systems support Aux-in and Bluetooth.
Other advanced features offered with the car are rear parking camera, power outlets at rear seats, a five-inch LCD display, an instrument cluster with the ‘Econ’ light setting, a start-stop button, a touch-screen panel, glossy dashboard, etc., which reflect the high-class sophistication and comfort level of the sedan.
    Honda City Interior
The chunky steering feels good to hold. The driver seat is adjustable and the driving position is quite comfortable. With 2600 mm long wheelbase, the City offers ample legroom and cabin space. The boot space is reasonably purposeful and large measuring around 510 litres.

  • Engine & Transmission Honda City Engine & Transmission

Known for its powerful and fuel efficient engines, Honda has now launched City with a diesel engine for the very first time and that too with the most fuel efficient one. The case is no different with the petrol models; the Petrol mill too offers a class-leading fuel economy. The City diesel with the 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine returns an impressive mileage of 26 kmpl, along with producing a maximum power output of 98 bhp with 200 Nm of peak torque. It’s the same engine that powers Amaze. This power unit is boosted with the VGT (Variable Geometry Turbo) technology. The fourth-generation City petrol derives its power from the 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine, which comes mated with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a CVT automatic transmission.
    Honda City Engine & Transmission
The CVT automatic transmission is 10 percent lighter than the conventional CVTs. Coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission, it delivers a class-leading mileage of 17.8 kmpl, while with the automatic transmission, it delivers an even better mileage of 17.9 kmpl. This power train delivers a peak power output of 117 bhp with 146 Nm of torque. The City diesel is competent to sprint to 100 kmph from standing still in 12.5 seconds, while the City petrol can achieve 0-100 kmph just in 10 seconds with a top speed of 195 kmph.

  • Mileage Honda City Mileage

Honda cars are recognized for their powerful engines and fuel efficiency, and the Honda City is not an exception here. Claimed to be the most fuel efficient car of India, the all-new City diesel offers an outstanding mileage of 26 kmpl. The City diesel is offered with a six-speed manual transmission option. On the other side, the sedan petrol variant comes mated either with a five speed manual transmission or a CVT automatic gearbox. The CVT automatic gearbox is 10 percent lighter this time, which has made it more fuel efficient than the manual version. The City petrol with MT delivers 17.8 kmpl, while with CVT, it returns 17.9 kmpl.

  • Braking and Safety Honda City Braking and Safety

Braking performance of the next-generation City is quite impressive. The sedan comes integrated with the advanced ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution) and collapsible electric power assisted steering that handles panic braking situations effectively. The front McPherson struts with stabilizer and coil spring, and the rear torsion beam axle spring suspension system is matured enough to absorb jerks on rough surfaces. The City comes loaded with several active and passive safety features, like SRS Dual front air bags, ABS with EBD, active headrest for the driver and front passenger, rear windshield defogger, G-CON structure around the passengers, seatbelts, and many more.

  • Performance and Handling Honda City Performance and Handling

The City feels smooth and sturdy even on uneven roads. Honda is more focussed on the overall performance and fuel efficiency, and has introduced the Honda City as an ideal luxury sedan. Tuned with the ECU and a six-speed transmission, the City diesel is a great vehicle to drive. The refinement levels are better than before. Despite sharing its diesel engine with Amaze, the City diesel isn't that noisy. The clutch and gearbox are smooth. The turbo lag is negligible. The engine feels rev-happy upto 4100 rpm, but above this line, it starts shivering. The zigzag pattern and low tension oil seals for piston coating reduce the engine friction and improve the NVH level. The throttle response is prompt and power delivery is linear. The mid-range performance isn't impressive, but at high speeds, the car overcomes this issue.
    Honda City Performance and Handling
With a purpose to enhance the engine economy, Honda has boosted the diesel engine with double needle plug and valve timing. Along with this, the low viscosity oil, a high swirl port and an offset crankshaft add more to its performance. The aluminium power unit, and light body built and parts contribute to the overall ride quality and handling of the car. The robust front McPherson struts and rear H-shaped torsion beam suspension system not only improve the sedan’s rigidity by 24 percent, but also absorbs the jerks and bumps very well. However, the skinny tyres are really disappointing. The sedan is insulated with high-quality sound insulation material to bring a pleasing driving experience. The turning radius is also well controlled.
  • What we think What do we think about Honda City?

The fourth generation Honda City has all what it takes to become an ideal urban sedan. With new design philosophy and Floating Cockpit interior, the City looks beautiful both from inside and out. Equipped with several comfort and safety features, the sedan offers a premium feel of luxury and sophistication. The City is claimed to be the most fuel efficient car of India. Mated with a six-speed manual transmission, the Honda City diesel offers a segment-leading mileage of 26 kmpl (ARAI certified). Honda introduced 10 percent lighter CVT automatic transmission to improve the fuel economy of this sedan. The Honda City petrol is offered in both manual and automatic transmission options, delivering a whooping mileage of 17.9 kmpl and 17.8 kmpl, respectively. The driving dynamics and handling of the Honda City is above its class.

Honda City What do we think about

The competitive pricing along with the low maintenance cost and cheaper spare parts make the Honda City the most alluring deal of the segment. The base variant of City is priced at Rs. 7.72 lac, while the top-end variant comes around Rs. 11.56 lac.

  • Competitors Honda City Competitors

The next-generation Honda City directly competes with Hyundai Verna. Designed on Hyundai’s popular Fluidic design, the Verna looks very premium and sporty. On the other side, based on Honda’s new global design theory “EXCITING H!!!,” the Honda City looks younger and more outgoing. Honda’s design language addresses to young generation and people who like to live with high-class sophistication, and makes it an obvious choice.

The Hyundai Verna offers a good cabin space with premium level of ease and comfort. The soft cushioning brings a great sense of comfort, but under thigh support is an issue. Honda City is sleeker, richer and more spacious than before. With a numbers of bells and whistles, the City offers high level comfort. The plastic quality and features list of City is relatively more impressive than those of Verna.

Verna comes powered with a 1.6-litre VGT diesel engine that produces a decent power and torque outputs. However, the significant turbo lag is really very disappointing. The City diesel is claimed to be the most fuel efficient car of the country, offering a segment-leading mileage of 26 kmpl. The Honda CVT automatic transmission is lighter and more efficient than the standard CVTs. The Honda City impresses with its power and torque outputs. The City behaves well at high speeds, even on rough surfaces. The overall handling and driving dynamics of City are just exceptional in this segment. Undoubtedly, Honda City has an upper hand when it comes to engine power and performance.

Since pricing is considered to be one of the most important aspects while buying a car, Honda has kept the City's pricing spot-on. However, Hyundai also doesn't disappoint its buyers in this department. Therefore, in terms of pricing, both the cars are neck and neck.
