Hyundai Creta Overview

Hyundai held back for a while before venturing into the compact SUV segment and for all the reasons, it has been worth the wait. The growing fondness for compact-sized SUVs in India is clearly evident with the launch of new SUVs every now and then. Hyundai’s Creta, which has started afresh in India, encloses a number of features that put it on par with the rivals. Exteriors are built carefully, striking a perfect balance between the chic quotient and muscularity. Evaluating in terms of outer semblance, Hyundai Creta is a winner hands down in its segment, making the likes of Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport look smaller in comparison.
Interiors too have been worked upon meticulously; it is nothing like a feature-clad cabin that looks cluttered and leaves the driver confused while on the go. The Korean car maker makes sure to equip some of the best features in the segment; especially the high-end variant is well tucked. Engine choices include one petrol and two diesel power trains borrowed from its smaller sibling Verna. Hyundai Creta transmission options comprise of one manual and one automatic gearbox, with the automatic tranny available only on one trim level - the Hyundai Creta SX+. The price of Hyundai Creta in India has been positioned competitively.

Hyundai Creta Exterior

Appearing evidently larger than its arch rivals, Hyundai gets an edge over its competition in terms of the outer stance. The pictures of Hyundai Creta exterior give a clear hint of its boastful dimensions; the compact SUV measures 4270 mm long, 1780 mm wide and 1630 mm high, and gets a long wheelbase of 2590 mm. The front features a long bonnet and a straight-up three-slat chrome grille flanked by captivating projector head lights featuring integrated LED daytime running lights. The wide dual-tone body-painted front bumper gets fog lamps and air intakes along with a front under spoiler.
The black cladding all over at the bottom looks sporty. The 16-inch alloy rims for the mid-level trims and 17-inch diamond-cut rims for the range-topping grade ornate the side profile. The large wheel arches look masculine. The body-coloured outside rear view mirrors get power-adjustable and power-foldable functions along with integrated turn indicators. The strong character lines and black sash tape around the windows bring prominence to the side profile. Body-¬coloured outside door handles are available on mid-level grades and the top-end trim gets chrome outside door handles. Roof rails add a sporty flair to the exteriors. The rear features wrap-around tail lights, reminiscent of the i20 hatchback, and an integrated roof spoiler. Along with these, a sleek chrome band above the rear license plate and reflectors are placed. Rear defogger, front and rear silver skid plates, rear wiper and washer, and LED positioning lamps are some of the other exterior features available on the SUV.

Hyundai Creta Interior

A long wheelbase of 2590 mm implies an opulent cabin, which translates into good head room, leg room and shoulder room. That said, the front offers impressive space and the rear has ample room, allowing to seat three adults comfortably. A high window line at the rear enables restricted view from the back. The dual-tone dashboard is perfectly styled and appears chic. The central console does not look cluttered. Use of beige and silver accent renders an elegant look to the cabin. The range-topping grade gets a 7-inch touchscreen, just beneath which are climate control buttons. Leather-upholstered seats are exclusively available on the range-topping variants while rest of the trims feature fabric-upholstered seats. Leather covering can be seen on the gear knob in the SX+ automatic variant only. Comfort goodies on offing include adjustable front head rests, keyless entry, power windows, height adjuster for the driver’s seat, adjustable rear seat head restraints, 7-inch infotainment system with steering-mounted controls for audio system and bluetooth, audio-video navigation, and smart key with push button, among few others.

Hyundai Creta Engine & Transmission

Hyundai has put on offer two diesel engines and one petrol motor. The diesel range gets a 1.4-litre CRDi diesel power train, which has been tuned to churn out maximum power of 90 PS along with 220 Nm of top torque. The 1.4-litre diesel engine is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. The other diesel motor powering high trims of Creta is a 1.6-litre, CRDi diesel power plant good for 128 PS of peak power and 260 Nm of pinnacle torque. The high-displacement diesel engine is available in six-speed manual as well as six-speed automatic tranny. For petrol variants, Hyundai has employed a 1.6-litre VTVT gasoline engine capable of belting out a towering power of 123 PS along with 151 Nm of top torque. This engine is also linked to the six-speed manual transmission. The six-speed automatic transmission is inducted by Hyundai in the compact SUV segment; hence Creta becomes a pioneer in bringing this transmission aboard.

Hyundai Creta Mileage

Mileage is an important parameter while evaluating the potential of a car, especially in a market like India where viability of a vehicle is derived by how frugal it is. The petrol manual variant of the compact SUV is claimed to return 15.29 kmpl. The 1.4-litre diesel manual variant is tuned to deliver 21.38 kmpl. On the other hand, the 1.6-litre diesel manual trims can run up to 19. 67 kmpl and the 1.6-litre diesel automatic trim claims to deliver 17.01 kmpl of run.

Hyundai Creta Braking and Safety

Stopping power is provided by disc brakes fitted in the front axle. An anti-lock-braking system is also inset, ensuring that the vehicle does not roll or skid. The vital safety features that Creta offers comprise an immobilizer, dual airbags, impact-sensing auto door unlock, electronic stability control with hill assist control, rear parking camera with guidelines and sensors, and rear parking sensors.

Hyundai Creta Performance and Handling

Performance wise, the 1.4-litre diesel, 1.6-litre diesel (manual and automatic) and 1.6-litre VTVT petrol engines do not disappoint. The diesel engines are refined and offer great performance, though there is a turbo lag, which is felt initially but the engines rev up slowly. Gear shifting is effortless in both the transmissions. Ride and handling is good enough. Overall, Creta is a good cruiser and is here to send shivers to the rivals.

What do we think about Hyundai Creta?

Hyundai has come up with a smart offering in the compact segment, Creta, which is refreshingly styled. Its outer stance is robust, which makes the SUV look larger than the rivals. Hyundai’s new generation Fluidic Design language convincingly manages to lure lookers. Cabin is designed austerely. Space for passengers on the front and rear is generous, however, the view from rear is a little restricted due to the high window line that makes the seat seem low. The well-equipped cabin and all-essential safety features make Creta a desirable SUV. The powerful engine line-up and a segment-first six-speed auto box on offer (SX+ diesel only) bring Creta a notch above the rivals. Mileage is appreciative and performance on road is good, making Creta a complete package.

Hyundai Creta Competitors

The compact segment is slowly growing in size with new launches; this segment definitely has potential, and has attracted customers time and again. In the competitive compact SUV segment, Hyundai’s Creta will gun straight against the likes of Renault Duster, Ford EcoSport and Nissan Terrano primarily. Of all, Creta definitely has an edge when it comes to exteriors. The features embedded inside make the cabin even snugger and the segment-first 1.6-litre automatic transmission could work in the SUV’s favour. The 1.6-litre diesel and 1.6-litre petrol engines offer ample power, clearly overpowering rivals. Space on offer is sumptuous, which means that occupants can be comfortable. However, Creta lags behind in terms of wheelbase, implying that its rivals have a larger cabin space. Equipment wise, Hyundai never fails and Creta is also a well-stuffed SUV, offering advanced features. For now, the SUV lacks an AWD, available on the Duster, but we hope Hyundai could come up with the AWD variant in future.
