I need a car time and again when I return home on a vacation from my job abroad. The car should have a good mileage and interior quality along with decent exterior looks as well. I am looking for a petrol car that is low on maintenance and has excellent power. I was considering the Maruti Baleno but I've heard that its build quality is poor while its weight is less so it isn't stable. Is that so? How would the Baleno stand in competition with Hyundai Elite i20 and Maruti Swift Dzire? Which one out of the three will be the best option for me?

Since you will not be driving the car regularly, it is good that you are considering a Maruti or Hyundai petrol vehicles. Since you’ve liked the Maruti Baleno, you should take a test drive and see the implications of these short comings yourself, because in my opinion, these issues aren’t as big as the hype around them is. Baleno is a very decent car that is comfortable, pretty stable with decent interiors and exteriors. The car does not give much to complaint about. The quality is decent than most cars while the stability is good as well.
Maruti Baleno petrol ex-showroom, New Delhi prices begin from Rs. 5.15 lakhs for Sigma followed by Delta at Rs. 5.8 lakhs, Zeta at Rs. 6.4 lakhs and Alpha at Rs. 7.11 lakhs. The Delta automatic variant costs Rs. 6.8 lakhs while Zeta automatic costs Rs. 7.47 lakhs. From chrome around the exteriors to DRLs, projector headlamps, multi-information speedometer display with color TFT, reverse parking sensors, reverse parking camera, rear wiper and washer etc. Maruti Baleno is fully loaded. It also has a SmartPlay infotainment system with Bluetooth, Aux and USB compatibility, Smartphone connect and Apple CarPlay etc. in the top end Alpha. The petrol engine of the vehicle is an 1197cc mill which can deliver 83.1bhp at 6000rpm while the torque produced is 115Nm at 4000rpm. Overall, it is a smart looking hatchback with a decent price tag. The cabin has a lot of space; in fact the space is good for 5 adults. The engine is peppy while the boot space is 339 litres which makes it a hatchback with one of the largest boots. The ride quality is neutral while the ownership experience is almost fuss-free. The airbags, ABS with EBD, dual horn etc. is available across variants. The automatic variant offers 19kmpl whereas the manual transmission can deliver 21kmpl.
Maruti Swift Dzire petrol starts at a price of Rs. 5.23 lakhs for its LXi variant and goes up to Rs. 5.31 lakhs for LXi Optional, Rs. 5.47 for LXi Optional (O), Rs. 5.99 lakhs for Dzire VXi while the VXi (O) is priced at Rs. 6.22 lakhs, VXi AT at Rs. 6.82 lakhs and ZXi carries a price of Rs. 6.98 lakhs whereas the Dzire VXi AT (O) is priced at Rs. 7.02 lakhs. In terms of features, it has airbags and reverse parking sensors, automatic AC etc. only in the top end variant and optional variants while it also features, speed sensitive auto door lock, power steering, manual AC etc. in mostly all variants. It has an 1197cc engine which delivers 83.1bhp at 6000rpm whereas the torque produced by the vehicle is 115Nm at 4000rpm. It is offered with 5 speed manual transmission and 4 speed automatic transmission options. Overall it’s an interestingly priced vehicle with refined engine, effortless driving capability and fantastic fuel efficiency. The petrol mileage for Dzire is 18kmpl.
Hyundai Elite i20 comes with standard airbags and there is also ABS with reverse parking sensors, rear camera, rear view camera display, rear defogger with times, LED DRL and positioning headlamps, advanced supervision display, touchscreen audio video navigation system, push start/stop button, fully automatic AC in higher variants and manual AC is the lower end variants etc. Hyundai Elite i20 is considerably one of the most well equipped hatchbacks of its time. The range of Hyundai Elite i20 variants begin with Era priced at Rs. 5.56 lakhs followed by Magna at Rs. 6.15 lakhs, Sportz at Rs. 6.68 lakhs, Asta priced at Rs. 7.21 lakhs and finally the Asta (O) is priced at Rs. 7.57 lakhs. It definitely is an all-round packaged with spacious interiors and refined driving. It has lots of features while the suspension system of the car is quite good as well.
So before one can choose, you need to list out the features you require, approximate costs (these costs are ex-showroom New Delhi) and whether you want a sedan or a hatchback and other details. Based on your list of requirements, it’ll be easy for you to shortlist which vehicle should you go in for.
