Hyundai Xcent Overview

Hyundai Xcent was firstly launched at the 2014 Auto Expo in the Indian market. The sedan never really was a super performer, nor it was a disappointment as it continued to garner moderate sales of around 3000-4000 units per month. But, from the past few months, the Xcent started losing its charm due to arrival of several up-market sedans. Plus, ageing was also a factor behind the dipping sales. Hence, it propelled Hyundai to come up with a mild facelift of the sedan with updates not just limited to cosmetics but mechanical as well. The new Xcent is introduced in both petrol and diesel fuel trims in five trim levels: E, E+, S, SX and SX (O).
Hyundai Xcent Overview
In addition, an automatic variant is also introduced in petrol fuel trims, based on the S trim. The petrol engine is retained while the 1.1L diesel engine is replaced with 1.2L unit, sourced from the recently launched Grand i10 facelift. The biggest highlight of the Xcent is undoubtedly the introduction of 7-inch touchscreen system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Hyundai Xcent Exterior

2017 Xcent's exterior styling is based on Hyundai's 2.0 Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy. The pre-facelift model was strikingly similar to the Grand i10 sans the boot, but this time around Hyundai designers have really been able to break that perception and come up with a different design.
Hyundai Xcent Exterior
It looks proportionate and cohesive as compared to majority of cars in the segment. The new sedan flaunts signature cascade design front grille with horizontal chrome slats and sweptback headlamps with LED (Daytime Running Lamps) DRLs. The restyled bumper with fog lamps sum up the updates at the front fascia. It rides on dual-tone dimaond cut alloy wheels with first-in-segment Wheel Air Curtains. The side profile remains the same with the Pull type Chrome door handles and ORVMs with turn indicators, while the rear end features new two piece wrap around tail lamps, dual tone bumper, and Shark Fin Antenna (first-in-segment).

Hyundai Xcent Interior

The interior cabin of 2017 Hyundai Xcent is finished in dual-tone Black and Beige upholstery with Blue illumination. Though, most of the features seen on the pre-facelift model such as adjustable rear headrests, rear seat centre armrest with cup holders, leather wrapped steering wheel, fully automatic temperature control, tachometer, multi-information display with digital clock and tripmeter, electric power steering, front and rear power outlets, rear A/C vents, cooled glovebox, height adjustable driver's seat and push button start/stop have been retained in the new model. However, the biggest update comes in form of the 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Smart phone (Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink), Bluetooth, Aux-in, USB connectivity and Voice Recognition feature.
Hyundai Xcent Interior
Though, it is available on the range-topping variants as the mid variants get just a 2-DIN audio system with four speakers. Sadly, the base variant doesn't get anything, even the 2-DIN music system misses out. The steering mounted audio and bluetooth controls feature is standard with E+ onward grades. A special mention goes to the Smart phone holder with Charging port, which is only available with the automatic variant.

Hyundai Xcent Engine & Transmission

2017 Hyundai Xcent, identical to its predecessor, comes in both petrol and diesel fuel trims. The petrol variants retain the same 1.2L 4-cylinder Kappa dual VTVT engine which develops top power of 82bhp at 6000rpm and peak torque of 114Nm at 4000rpm. It is linked to a 5-speed manual transmission as standard, while it is also available with a 4-speed automatic gearbox in S grade.
Hyundai Xcent Engine & Transmission
Coming to the diesel front, the 1.1L engine has gone for a toss in favour of a new and more powerful 1.2L 3-cylinder U2 CRDi engine, which generates maximum power output of 74bhp at 4000rpm highest torque performance of 190Nm between 1750-2250rpm. It is on offer with only a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Hyundai Xcent Mileage

2017 Hyundai Xcent petrol variants deliver mileage of 20.14kmpl and 17.36kmpl (Both ARAI Specified) with manual and automatic transmissions, respectively. On the other hand, the diesel variants returns fuel efficiency of 25.40kmpl (ARAI Specified).

Hyundai Xcent Braking and Safety

2017 Hyundai Xcent comes with disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. The company has offered dual front airbags as standard fitment across the entire variant line-up of the new sedan. In addition, several premium features such as Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Impact Sensing Auto Door Unlock, Keyless entry with Smart Key, Rear Parking Sensors, Rear Camera with display on audio, Central Locking, etc. are available with the top-end variants. Though, it looks bleaker than the preceding model, which had ABS as standard safety feature. Also, the other sedans in the segment come equipped with more safety features than Xcent.

Hyundai Xcent Performance and Handling

The 2017 Hyundai Xcent comes with improved handling as comapred to its precedessor. The company engineers have worked hard towards the light steering wheel. The power delivery in the diesel variants is smoother due to the new engine. The NVH levels are immensely controlled and one seldom hear a noise even at low speeds. It feels pretty decent behind the steering wheel.

What do we think about Hyundai Xcent?

2017 Hyundai Xcent seems to be better than the preceding model in terms of exterior appearance, interior features, and driving dynamics. A special mention goes to the new diesel engine, which is more powerful and fuel efficient than before. The automatic variant is also available for added convenience. In all, it is a decent offering with more bells and whistles than before.

Hyundai Xcent Competitors

2017 Hyundai Xcent challenges the likes of Maruti Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Tata Tigor, Tata Zest, Ford Aspire and Volkswagen Ameo in the Indian market.
