Isuzu D-MAX OverviewIsuzu Motors, the eminent Japanese diesel engine manufacturer, is trying hard to get its footprint in India and going belligerent with plans and strategies, the company recently wheeled out the D-Max pickup truck in the country. The company launched the D-Max multi-utility pickup with three variants - a single-cab flat deck version, a space cab flat deck version, and arched deck space cab version. Its ordinary pricing clearly reveals company's vision regarding the audience which it tends to target.
It is company's second vehicle in India after the SUV MU-7 and intended towards commercial rural buyers. There is lots of space in this multi-utility truck and it caters to the demands of goods loading as well as humans. Isuzu has tried hard to indulge a feather of style, comfort and luxury in D-Max by including features such as power windows, central locking, steering rake adjust, air-conditioning and a day-night rear-view mirror. Under the hood, it sports company's 2.5L powertrain which churns out healthy power and torque figures.
Isuzu D-MAX ExteriorAlthough, a 2-seater and 2-door pickup truck; but it has lots of space behind in the cargo which goes well with its overall exterior appearance. The top-end variant in the line-up, arched deck version, gets lot of chrome treatment on the front grille. The front body-coloured bumpers, door handles and side mirrors appear decent with the cargo area which gets integrated in the body.
Though, company has tried to make it better than Tata Xenon and other Mahindra trucks but it seems inferior to them, owing to lack of features such as fog lamps, alloy wheels, and wheel covers. The D-Max truck is currently available with three dynamic colours- Sterling Silver Metallic, Alpine White, and Nautilus Blue. The multi-utility vehicle sports radial tubeless tyres of size 215/ 70 R15.
Isuzu D-MAX InteriorThe interior cabin of Isuzu D-Max, especially the dashboard is quite identical to company's MU-7 SUV. The company has incorporated black and grey plastic inside, instead of faux wood and silver trim. However, the cabin is not praiseworthy but it comfortably beats all its contemporaries in this segment. The fabric seats are comfortable but you are deprived of making any adjustments in height of the seat. As far as entertainment goes, it has a single-DIN Kenwood audio system with 2 speakers where an individual can hear desired music.
In the arched deck variant, the company has left fair amount of space behind the front seats inside the cabin. It can be utilized in keeping small goods and belongings, or accommodating a small thin person. Apparently, it is similar to the middle 'front' seat of Datsun GO. There are several modern features for the sake of convenience and comfort of the occupants like bottle holders in the doors, cup holders in the centre console, separate adjustable headrest for both front seats, ash tray with cigar lighter, 12 Volt mobile phone charging point to name a few. Manually adjustable outside rear view mirrors are a disappointment.
Isuzu D-MAX Engine & Transmission
Isuzu D-Max comes with a 2.5-litre, Common rail diesel engine with turbo-charger and intercooler. The engine has 4-cylinders and displaces 2499cc while generating a decent power output of 134bhp at 3600rpm. The engine also belts out a peak torque performance of 294Nm at 1800-3200rpm. The engine is coupled with company's traditional 5-speed manual gearbox in accordance with a single plate dry clutch. This engine is a winner in itself and performs fairly well on almost every terrain with the lagging lasting up to 2100rpm.
Isuzu D-MAX MileageIsuzu D-Max, despite sporting a heavy engine of 2.5L, returns an impeccable fuel economy of 12kmpl in standard conditions. However, the mileage goes down to 10kmpl inside the overcrowded and narrow city roads but it is acceptable as the vehicle is purely performance oriented and is able to carry an immense amount of luggage. Generally, mileage doesn't count as a significant factor in such vehicles but still, it needs to be looked upon because of the ever-rising fuel rates in our country.
Isuzu D-MAX Braking and SafetyIsuzu D-Max braking system is quite efficient and up to the mark. It is an aspect in which both the Isuzu vehicles, the MU-7 SUV as well as the D-Max pickup truck, are majestic and don't leave room for improvement. Isuzu D-Max features ventilated discs as front brakes and Drum brakes as rear ones. Though, there is neither ABS nor EBD, and even airbags are not being offered by the company. Although, its body structure is quite rigid and the lower pricing compensates for all these safety features.
Isuzu D-MAX Performance and HandlingIsuzu D-Max uses a tilt adjustable power steering which is one of the most desirable features present in this pickup truck and it helps exceptionally well in turning the vehicle smoothly. As far as performance is concerned, the vehicle is a gem. It has a top speed of 175kmpl and with the Common Rail engine and a ground clearance of 195mm; it possesses the capability to conquer almost any surface with sheer comfort and utter disdain. Initially, when the D-Max is in first and second gears it seems a bit lagged but as it gradually attains speed, it is fun to drive vehicle and effortless.
What do we think about Isuzu D-MAX?Isuzu D-Max might be the game-changer for the company, owing to the lack of vehicles in the requisite segment. Mechanically, it is flawless and doesn't roll much like the SUVs. Isuzu is contemplating for several new dealerships in various parts of the country in order to maximize its reach to the customers. The segment is a gold-charmer for small consumers as well as businessmen’s', and presence of a few vehicles in it are surely going to go in favour of this multi-utility vehicle. It would certainly entice the potential buyers and rake in a good moolah for the company.
Isuzu D-MAX CompetitorsIsuzu D-Max is the second outing of Japanese automaker in India and it seems like a crowd-puller than its other contemporaries like the Tata Xenon, Mahindra Scorpio Getaway and Bolero. Unlike its rivals, its smaller in size, affordable in cost and larger in power which subsequently benefits it the most. The best thing about it remains to be the price which is way lesser than than the competitors without compromising the inner cabin spaciousness and comfort features.
