Jaguar XJ L Overview

Jaguar, the UK based ultra-luxury automaker and a subsidiary of Indian autogiant Tata Motors, is synonymous to luxury and aristocracy; courtesy its extravagant saloons which are extremely tempting and seductive. Jaguar XJ L is company's flagship sedan which is is markets since 1968 and 'L' here stands for the 'Long Wheelbase'. The XJ saloon redefines elegance, comfort and dynamics by its exquisitely crafted interior cabin and supreme agility. It is being offered with as many as 5 variants - XJ Luxury LWB, XJ Premium Luxury LWB, XJ Portfolio LWB, XJ Supersport LWB, and XJR LWB. The company is all set to launch this flagship saloon in an all new avatar in June 2014, of which advance bookings had already begun.

Jaguar XJ is a genius in every aspect; be it the driving dynamics, be it the safety and security features or be it the highly pursued engine power and performance. Jaguar has presented the XJ sedan with 4 engine options; ranging from 2.0L petrol to a 5.0L V8 diesel engine and it solely depends upon an individual that with which powertrain he wishes to drive the beast home. It is positioned above the Jaguar XF, the executive sedan, in the company's vehicle lineup. The extended wheelbase does the trick here as it provides the rear passengers extra legroom, which they completely deserve after paying such a hefty sum. This sedan has enjoyed an absolute gala time at the Indian automotive industry and always been company's golden product in the company.

Jaguar XJ L Exterior

Jaguar XJ's front fascia is a bit similar to its younger sibling, the Jaguar XF sedan; but not entirely. The body structure is madeup of Aluminium metal which plays a pivotal role in its brisk acceleration and less fuel consumption due to its light weight. Sporting a wider bonnet, the centre of attraction at the front are the Bi-function HID Xenon headlamps with washers and LED daytime running lamps. The revised body-coloured front bumper along with a splitter adds to the aerodynamic design of the saloon. A panoramic sunroof is standard on all XJ models which is built of heat-reflective, tinted glass that filters the UV-rays and glitter the interior cabin with natural light.

As far as rear section of the saloon is talked, a special mention goes to 'Cat’s Claw' reminiscent rear LED light clusters which are never-seen-before in any Jaguar cars. Additionally, it has power folding electric adjusted exterior mirrors, auto dimming with courtesy puddle lamps and memory function, heated windscreen, rain sensing windscreen wipers etc.

to name a few. The company has also performed multiple cosmetic changes in the coming 2014 XJ in order to make it much advanced and up-market. Ian Callum, Design Director, Jaguar has provided this saloon an identity of its own by introducing the much wider front grille, unlike it predecessors who were much compact in size and smaller in appearance. Jaguar XJ is being offered with wheel size of 18 inch, 19 inch or 20 inch with plenty of wheel designs in each size.

Jaguar XJ L Interior

Such is the interior of this flagship sedan, that no adjectives are enough to describe its lavishness and do justice to the elegance, inside the cabin. The front as well as rear seats are formed of pure leather which is complimented well by the twin needle stitching. The leather seats are also being offered in three trims - bond grain, soft grain and semi-aniline. Furthermore, the front seats are heated ones too and equipped with a 5-way massaging system. The rear seats are no less as they are reclinable and feature a 3-way massage programmer with memory. The centre armrest with two cup-holders also holds the responsibility of control of music system. There is a 8-inch touch screen system integrated in the centre console which further facilitates the occupants by providing multiple necessary informations such as the distance of nearest petrol pump or city, audio control, navigation and telephone directory.

Jaguar has also incorporated four zone automatic climate control, electric side window blinds and footrests and leather-covered business tables in order to enhance the luxury factor. The saloon also comes with an optional heated steering wheel which has almost every significant and frequently used control like cruise control, telephone and interactive voice functions mounted on it. In order to keep the infotainment factor high, apart from the aforementioned 8-inch touch screen display, the company has integrated a 250W Sound System with 12 speakers and a high-mounted woofer and tweeter in each door.
The audio system also sports digital and AM/FM radios, and is compatible with WMA and MP3 players. There is also an option of Meridian 380W Audio System, the Meridian 825W Surround Audio System and the Meridian 1300W Reference Audio System. The 1300W System comes with as many as 26 speakers while churning out ultra-premium sound. There is also a provision of dual WhiteFire digital wireless headphones and transmitter for the rear seat passengers to watch live streaming of video hasslefree.

Jaguar XJ L Engine & Transmission

Jaguar XJ is being offered in both petrol and diesel fuel trims. Hence, the British automajor has wheeled out the XJ saloon with 4 different engine options out of which 3 are petrol engines while the remaining one is a diesel mill. The petrol ones are a 2.0L engine, a 3.0L engine and the top of the range 5.0L engine while the lone diesel being a 3.0L engine. The base variants and mid-variants are available with the light and efficient 2.0-litre i4 Turbocharged petrol engine which belts out a power output of 236.5bhp at 5500rpm and a torque performance of 340Nm at 2000-4000rpm. It is a four cylinder, sixteen valve engine which displaces 1999cc while coupled to a 8-speed automatic transmission. On the other hand, the 3.0-litre V6 Supercharged engine does its duty to the mid-variants of the saloon and belts out a power of 335.5bhp at 6500rpm along with torque of 450Nm at 3500-5000rpm. It is slightly heavier in size as it flaunts 6-cylinders and 24-valves while displacing 2995cc. It is mated to a 8-speed automatic gearbox and it also comes with Jaguar All Wheel Drive (AWD) technology in certain variants.
The top-end variants of the Jaguar XJ are equipped with a 5.0-litre V8 Supercharged engine which is the most powerful engine in this entire XJ range. This 8-cylinder, 32-valve, 5000cc engine is tweaked and tuned phenomenally to obtain four different power outputs and torque figures, according to the different variants. This engine generates four different power outputs of 380bhp at 6500rpm, 463.6bhp at 6000-6500rpm, 503.1bhp at 6000-6500rpm, and 542.5bhp at 6500rpm, respectively to accommodate four different variants. Similarly, it also produces maximum torque of 515Nm at 3500rpm, 575Nm at 2000-5500rpm, 625Nm at 2500-5500rpm and 680Nm at 2500-5500rpm, respectively. The power is transmitted via a 8-speed automatic gearbox with Intelligent Stop/Start function. Now, if the 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine is looked upon which is available with almost every variant, then it can be propounded that it is neck to neck with its petrol siblings. The 6-cylinder, 24-valve, 2993cc diesel mill is successful in inducing a power output of 271.2bhp at 4000rpm and maximum torque of 600Nm at 2000rpm. It is combined with a 8-speed automatic transmission in order to maximize tenacity and agility of the saloon.

Jaguar XJ L Mileage

The base and mid variants comprised with the 2.0L petrol engine return an impressive mileage of 12.34kmpl while the mid variants sporting the 3.0L petrol mill come up with a decent mileage of 10.41kmpl. The same mileage is retained by the engine even when it is combined to company's All-wheel drive system. The most powerful 5.0L powertrain delivers a fuel economy of 9.17kmpl, 8.62kmpl, 8.62kmpl, and 7.87kmpl at power outputs of 380bhp, 463.6bhp, 503.1bhp, and 542.5bhp, respectively. On the other hand, the 3.0L diesel engine equipped variants provide a appreciable fuel economy of 16.66kmpl. The 2.0L petrol engine acquires the advantage of being the lightest engine and hence performs supremely among all the engine options available.

Jaguar XJ L Braking and Safety

Jaguar XJ L comes equipped with one of the world's best braking system that has red painted brake calipers with Jaguar script in both the front and rear disc brakes. The braking system is complimented immensely well by the secondary braking systems like emergency brake assist (EBA) and electric parking brake (EPB). The XJ saloon features an array of safety and security features such as Automatic speed limiter (ASL), Adaptive cruise control (ACC) with forward alert and advanced emergency brake assist, Jaguar smart key system – keyless entry, Rear & Front parking aid with Touch-screen visual indicator, Reverse park camera with guidance, Pedestrian contact sensing system – Automatically deployable bonnet system, 3-flash lane change indicators, Remote control central locking with deadlocking and drive-away, Airbags front and side (driver and front passenger), Side curtain airbags, Front seats – whiplash protection system, Seat belt reminder (front and rear), ISOFIX anchor points for rear child seats, Blind spot monitor, Tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) etc. to mention a few.

Jaguar XJ L Performance and Handling

Jaguar XF is a spontaneous performer which is proved quite rightly by its acceleration figures. All the variants touch the 100kmph barrier from standstill in less than 6 seconds of time, except for the 2.0 petrol engine and 3.0 diesel engine based ones. In fact, these variants register a top speed of 240-280kmpl in standard conditions. And as far as handling is concerned, it is top-notch owing to the inclusion of various avant-garde technologies such as Jaguar Sequential Shift, Intelligent Stop/Start technology, Jaguar Drive Selector, Active Differential, Dynamic Stability Control etc. These advanced technologies smoothen the ride in every drive, irrespective of the weather and road conditions.

What do we think about Jaguar XJ L?

Jaguar XJ symbolizes luxury, enigma and performance in such a manner that any other car doesn't! The saloon, right from its inception, has been garnering rave reviews for its exceptional performance and sublime interior cabin. It can be comfortably propounded that it is the best sedan available in India under the price tag of Rs. 1 Crore. Despite the lacklustre dealership network of Jaguar Landrover India, it has been peculiar in its own way and its charm hasn't faded at all and with each passing moment of time, it appears more and more elegant. Certainly a timeless!

Jaguar XJ L Competitors

Jaguar XJ, the impeccable saloon from the hub of UK based automaker, faces stiff competition in the Indian auto industry from its German foes such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8, and BMW 7 Series. All these cars are extremely innovative, sophisticated and aristocratic, leaving almost negligible for any kind of error or improvement. But, recently, Jaguar XJ was sold more than its German counterparts due to its aggressive and smart pricing. Availability also gives it an edge over the others, and JLR India has already announced that it will be built locally in India and the first India-made unit would be wheeled out in June with a price tag of around 90-95 Lakhs which would further give it an upperhand over the contemporaries.
