Jeep is a 78-year-old American automaker, headquartered at Toledo, Ohio, U.S.A. It deals in the production and sale of premium SUVs. Its vehicles are either compact sport utility vehicles, medium-sized sport utility vehicles or semi-luxury sport utility vehicles. Jeep vehicles were primarily used in the armed forces for transportation of goods and personnel, and later got involved in the commercial vehicle market.
In 1940, when the Second World War was turning fierce and the United States Army was going to be involved in the war, they wanted a sturdy reconnaissance vehicle in their arsenal that could face any terrain without breaking down. Out of the 135 companies that the U.S Army contacted for the job, only three responded; they were American Bantam Car Company, Ford Motor Company and Willys – Overland. Karl Probst, a freelance designer in collaboration with Bantam began working on building the cars in July 1940. As it became clear that one company wouldn’t be able to handle the high demands of the Army, the three companies began designing and building reconnaissance vehicles together and the result was a vehicle that would be known around the world as “jeep”.
Willys-Overland created the prototype car named “Quad” (as a reference to 4X4 drivetrain, which is commonly used even today). After undergoing arduous testing from the Army, Willys-Overland was given the contract of providing 16,000 cars with the necessary revision that were pointed out during testing. The Willys MB as well as the Ford Model GPW were created specifically for military use and were made as per the Willys design. During its entirety, Willys – Overland and Ford produced a combined 640,000 cars solely for use in military operations.
After the war ended, Willys decided to take the existing structure and design of the Willys MB and develop the first ever Civilian Jeep (CJ). The rugged, versatile and all-terrain CJ-2A was the perfect vehicle for the farmers in the U.S and was launched for the public in 1945. The following year, Willys built another unique vehicle for civilians, the Willys Wagon, which was America’s first all-steel station wagon with extreme durability. The Willys – Overland truck followed in the wagon’s footsteps and made life simpler for the farmers. It was available in two- as well as four-wheel drive (4X2 and 4X4) models and could be fitted with a stake bed or a pickup, can or chassis. In 1949, Willys developed an improved successor to the CJ-2A, the Willys Jeep CJ-3A.
