The Jeep Compass looks muscular and aggressive, it has a solid build quality, feels premium on the inside and offers a good balance between a rugged off-roader and an everyday premium SUV.
Under the hood, the Compass comes with two engine options – a 1.4-litre petrol engine and a 2.0 litre turbocharged diesel engine. Petrol engine produces a peak power of 160 bhp and peak torque of 250 Nm while diesel engine produces 171 bhp and 350 Nm respectively, but the ARAI certified mileage of both variants is 17.1 kmpl. Not only are the engines reasonably refined; there is almost never a lack of power and torque when you need it.
The ride quality of Jeep Compass is excellent and it is very well-suited for Indian road conditions. Its compact size, high point of visibility and punchy engines make it easy to maneuver in city traffic. The work on the suspension is immediately apparent as this SUV rides beautifully even on bad roads. High speed composure is great and the Compass has a confidence inspiring feel of solidity on the highway. NVH levels are low and body roll is also well controlled. All four wheels get disc brake and they perform well to stop the car in its stride, no locking up.
If you had to choose between the two, it won’t be hard to pick the diesel over the petrol, for better pickup and performance.
