KIA Stonic Preview

The Korean car giant, Kia is prepping to spearhead in the Indian market with some of its popular models, sometime in 2019. Kia Stonic, which is already on sale in some European markets, is likely to be a part of Kia’s product portfolio, in India. The SUV was unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor show and is expected to underpin the new platform, being built by Kia, for the emerging markets. This would allow Kia to curb pricing for the Indian market. While there is yet no clarity on its India launch, the SUV is likely to be displayed at the Auto Expo 2018. As for the pricing, the Kia Stonic price is expected to be pegged competitively.

KIA Stonic Exterior

The company revealed design sketches of the SUV sometime last year, followed by its public display at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. Kia Stonic sold in the international markets, is based on Kia Rio/Hyundai’s GB platform, hence a new platform, which allows cost saving, makes more sense for the Indian market.

KIA Stonic Interior

Though the SUV is already on sale in European markets, we are not sure if the Indian-spec model (if launched in India) will feature the same layout. Being a compact SUV, it is likely to feature a five-seat layout and a large boot for storing luggage. On the feature front, expect a large touchscreen along with smartphone connectivity features, etc.

KIA Stonic Engine & Transmission

Launched in the European markets, the model is available with three engine options including the 1.0-litre, turbocharged, three-pot petrol, 1.4-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine and a 1.6-litre oil burner. As for the Indian market, there is yet no clarity on this front.

KIA Stonic Mileage

It would be a bit early to comment on the fuel economy of the SUV, as details on the mechanical front are yet hazy. Considering that Stonic could be a potential rival to the popular models in its segment, Kia will focus on the fuel economy, hence, we expect it to deliver decent numbers.

KIA Stonic Braking and Safety

As for the safety features, the SUV could get primary safety equipment such as airbags for driver and co-passenger, an anti-lock-braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution, etc. available in most of the vehicles in India.

KIA Stonic Performance and Handling

Coming from the stables of Kia, the Stonic SUV is expected to deliver imposing performance. However, it is a bit pre-mature to comment on the performance as there are yet no details on the engine specifications for the India-bound model.

What do we think about KIA Stonic?

This would be one of Kia’s crucial products for the Indian market, especially knowing, SUV craze is at an all-time high. In terms of pricing, the model is likely to be tagged along the lines of Ford EcoSport.
