About Land Rover Cars

The makers of the Land Rover brand of cars, the Rover Company Limited, were originally luxury car manufacturers since 1878. This company introduced the Land Rover car after World War II in 1948. The distinction of designing the first Land Rover car should go to Maurice Wilks, the chief designer at Rover Company in 1947. It was a 4-wheel drive vehicle modelled on the design of the Jeep. Hence, you can also refer to these vehicles as off-road vehicles. In the initial stages, the Land Rover cars used to come in various shades of military green. These vehicles were an improvement on the Jeep (general purpose vehicle) as it was a civilian 4-wheel drive car with doors. It has indeed been an excellent journey for the Land Rover cars from the models introduced in 1948 to those available today.

Foundation of Land Rover Cars

The Rover Company had a reputation for manufacturing luxury vehicles. However, in the aftermath of World War II, they realised that the market was not the ideal one for continuing with luxury vehicles. The situation demanded an all-purpose vehicle that could run on all types of terrains. This idea was behind the designing of the first Land Rover car in 1947. The original design of the Land Rover was a cross between a tractor and a light truck. The unique feature of this vehicle was that it had a centrally mounted steering wheel in the initial stages of designing. Subsequently, they dropped the idea and reverted to the regular steering wheel.

The initial plan of Rover Company was to produce the Land Rover for a couple of seasons to recover some of the losses suffered by them because of the war. However, the model became an instantaneous success, thereby prompting them to improvise on the model and keep producing it. The Rover Company introduced a series of Land Rover vehicles named as Series I, Series II and Series III with each subsequent series being an improvement over the preceding one.

The simple all-purpose 4-wheel drive vehicle was the first of the Series I Land Rover cars. In 1949, they introduced the ‘Station Wagon’ model that could accommodate seven passengers. After starting with a 1.6-litre petrol engine, they graduated to the 2.0-litre petrol engine model in 1952/53. It was also the time the Rover Company changed the status of the car from a commercial vehicle to a multi-purpose vehicle. In 1955, the 7-seater vehicle metamorphosed into a 5-door 10-seater vehicle. Other improvements, like the Safari roof and the extensions to the wheelbase, followed soon thereafter. The year 1957 saw the introduction of the 2.0-litre diesel engine for the Land Rover Series I.

In 1958, the Company launched the successor to the Series I, aptly named as Series II. It used a 2.25-litre petrol engine with the 10-seater station wagon changing to a 12-seater vehicle to avail exemptions from UK taxes. There was continuous improvement in the models from the Series II to Series IIA and IIB before the introduction if Series III in 1971. The production of the Series III lasted until 1985 with the car models witnessing various improvements over the period.

In the meanwhile, the Rover Company classified the Land Rover car series as a separate brand and formed a new company, the Land Rover Company, in 1978. It was also the time when the company started exporting the Land Rover cars to countries like Australia, South Africa and so on.

The Acquisition and Expansion

British Leyland had already taken over the Rover Car Company in 1967. Hence, the Land Rover Company was also under the control of British Leyland from 1978 to 1986. The financial troubles faced by British Leyland resulted in the formation of a separate Rover Group in 1986 to oversee the Rover car models, including the Land Rover models.

The year 1994 saw BMW acquiring Land Rover. This venture did not last long as BMW sold Land Rover Company to Ford in 2000. Subsequently, Land Rover became an integral part of Ford’s Premier Automotive Group.  By 2006, Ford decided to offload the companies included in the Premier Automotive Group. It announced plans to sell the Land Rover along with Jaguar cars in 2007. Tata Motors (India) was the preferred bidder whereby it acquired Land Rover and Jaguar car operations in 2008.

The Tata Group incorporated a new British-registered company, namely Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. as a subsidiary. It also earned the rights to three other British car brands, the Daimler Marque, Lanchester and Rover.

The restructuring of the group happened on 1st January 2013 when there was renaming of the parent company to Jaguar Land Rover Automotive PLC. Consequently, the responsibility of manufacturing and marketing of both the Land Rover and Jaguar cars rested with this new entity. Hence, Jaguar Cars is the owner of Land Rover Car Company today.
