Land Rover Defender Preview

Land Rover Defender has been an iconic piece of history with its off-roading capabilities and a continuous run of 67 years. Since the Land Rover announced that they will be bringing back the Defender there has been a lot of speculations and excitement among the enthusiasts. After a wait of 3 years, Land Rover has re-launched its iconic SUV and the enthusiasts cannot be any happier. 2020 Defender comes with all-new chassis, technology, design, interiors and features. The SUV looks tough and rugged from every angle.

Land Rover Defender Exterior

Defender exteriors come with flat single-bar grille design which is flanked by LED headlamps. The rectangular headlamps consist of circular Daylight running lamps. The proportions of the SUV have been cleverly designed by the Land Rover so that the off-roading ability can be enhanced. The great ground clearance, short overhangs and the front and rear elevations have been designed in such a way so that the Defender can tackle any terrain. At the rear, we can see that the new design gives a throwback to the old Defender with the side-opening tailgate on which the full-size spare wheel is mounted which is more practical during off-roading. The wheel arches can be filled with up to 20-inches of alloy wheels as an option. There is also an option of 18-inch white steel wheels for some serious off-roading. Even the roof is configurable, there are 3 options to choose from:- Folding Fabric Roof, Sliding Panoramic Roof and a Fixed Metal Roof. The new Defender has taken some design clues from the old Defender. It resembles the icon with blacked-out pillars along with the rear windshield.

Land Rover Defender Interior

Land Rover Defender interior looks nothing like the old one. The interior is all new with soft-touch and plush interiors. The Defender comes with an all-new 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system named “Pivi Pro” which comes with navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. There is also an option Meridian Sound System with 10 speakers plus subwoofer which sounds amazing. The driver gets many convenience features like cruise control, heated steering wheel, ClearSight IRVM and keyless entry. There is also an option of getting a jump seat in the centre of the front seats and a digital instrument cluster instead of the analogue one. The front seats feature 12-way cooled electric memory function. The centre console in the front comes with a fridge so that the occupants can keep their drins cool on the highway trips. The heads-up display shows vital information to the driver so that he doesn’t need to take his eyes off the road. There is also an application introduced through which you can unlock/lock, change the climate, check the status of the vehicle etc.

Land Rover Defender Engine & Transmission

The Defender specs come with one petrol option only as of right now. The 2.0 Litre petrol engine is capable of producing 296bhp at 5500rpm of max power and a peak torque output of 400Nm at 1500-4100rpm. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission which sends power to all the wheels. There is also a set of low gear ratios for off-roading.

Land Rover Defender Mileage

Defender mileage is not yet revealed by the Land Rover.

Land Rover Defender Braking and Safety

Braking duties are done by disc brakes in the front and at the rear. There are a plethora of safety features that the Land Rover is offering. The Defender comes with 6 airbags, Driver Condition Monitor, 3D Surround Camera and 360° Parking Aid. There are also optional Rear Pre-collision Monitor and Blind Spot Assist. There is also Wade Sensing which uses ultrasonic sensors to provide real-time pictorial information about when the water is about to reach the 900mm maximum water wading depth.

Land Rover Defender Performance and Handling

The performance of the Defender is quite brisk for its size. Due to the new monocoque chassis, the handling of the SUV has been improved drastically for daily use and commuting. The air suspension ensures that the ride is as comfortable as it can get. Also, the air suspension helps with the off-road ability as it can increase the height of the SUV at will.

What do we think about Land Rover Defender?

Land Rover Defender is for those who mean serious business in off-roading. It is obvious that the SUV is a great off-roader within its segment and above. With the new design and features, the Defender may be successful in the market.
