Land Rover Range Rover OverviewLand Rover is as synonymous with off-roading as Ferrari with Formula 1. Since its day of inception, it has been a pioneer in providing the most comfortable off-roading experience known to humanity. Their flagship model, the Range Rover is one of the highly acclaimed motor celebrity throughout the world. People all over the world swear by its sheer off-road credibility and utterly luxurious cabin.
The outgoing Range Rover model looks modern and distinctive but without losing any charm of its predecessors. The design and styling of it is just perfect. Land Rover engineers have worked out brilliantly in altering just the convenience and minor bits of the car, keeping its major USP of butchy and squared-off tailoring philosophy almost untouched. With LED inserts in the lights and somehow aerodynamically better design, the Range Rover is almost flawless.
Side and rear profile are almost the same too with the only exception of power split tailgate and side aluminum strip along the body. Overall, it is about 38mm lower than the last generation Range Rover.
Interiors have change a lot and now they are even better. Everything looks and feels solid and makes the car more luxurious. The excessive use of leather and wood in the cabin shines brilliantly with the humongous cabin and well-crafted seats. All-terrain response system now has an additional auto mode which let the car decide out itself about the type of terrain you’re on and make adjustments accordingly.
Range Rover comes with two turbo diesel and one supercharged petrol engine. The 3.0L V6 and 4.4L V8 diesel churns out a healthy 258PS and 339PS of power respectively. The massive 5.0L supercharged petrol makes an eye-watering 510PS of relentless thrust. All the engines are very much refined and comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission system. Ride quality is unbelievably smooth on both paved and dirt roads. Lots of safety features and off-roading accessories keeps the Land Rover happy and agile in almost all type of terrains. And with shredding of almost 700pounds of its weight, the handling is better than ever.
Land Rover Range Rover has always been the epitome of graceful off-roading experiences and with now improved chassis and cabin it’s only the hike in pricing that pulls it down a bit.
Land Rover Range Rover ExteriorLand Rover has been out for a long time in the market and it never actually had a serious makeover whatsoever. It is not because people in Britain are too skeptical about it or they are too busy assisting US in invading oil wells but because they always knew that Range Rover had a near-perfect design from the very first day itself.
The front of the Range Rover still portrays a broad and butchy stance. Grille is still massive and protrudes out with an intimidating visage. The new adaptive xenon headlamps with LED DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) makes Ranger Rover much more modern and sophisticated than its predecessor. Almost camera lens detailing on the xenon bulbs is a nice touch too. New generation model is little bit wider and lower than the previous one and therefore makes the car much more appealing to a wider audience.
Side profile of the Range Rover has been tweaked slightly making it the most aerodynamic model of all of the Range Rovers with an aerodynamic coefficient of just 0.34. That along with new lighter all-aluminum unibody improves the performance of the car and makes it much more dynamic and agile for its size. The V6 variant comes with 19” five-split spoke alloy wheels whereas both the petrol and diesel V8 rides on 20” alloy wheels. Side gills and aluminum side strip have a personalization color option to it. Overall, the car is longer than the previous model but with more curves and lowered roof it looks equally proportioned. Rear end looks good with LED tail-lamps and roof-spoiler. Although the raised-up bumper and split tailgate makes it more functional and boxy it is still is a very nice looking and quality product nevertheless.
Land Rover has made the car much more modern and appealing from the outside but for some the less-brawny character and a bit resemblance with Ford Explorer makes Range Rover not everyone’s cup of tea.
Land Rover Range Rover InteriorLet me tell you very clearly, there are many other vehicles out there that have the same off-roading capabilities if not better than the Range Rover and that too at a low asking price. However, unlike the Range Rover, none of them takes you across jungles and mountains and muddy-terrains and pretty much everything in such a style and kingly state of divine comfort.
The holy trinity of wood, aluminum and leather has been bestowed on the Range Rover in colossal amounts. Everything is build out of the best material possible and by the best manufacturing process there is. Cabin depicts solidity and richness with a fit and finish that will last ages. Dashboard is now way more logical and uncluttered as almost half of the switches and knobs has been ditched from the previous model. Now the 8” touch screen and TFT instrument panel carries out most of the functions.
All the variants of Range Rover comes loaded with all the goodies you’ll ever need and then some more. Features like rain sensing wipers, xenon headlamps and DRLs, front park distance sensors with visual display, memory seats, volumetric and perimetric alarm, rear view camera, four-zone climate control, multi-functional steering wheel, mood lightning, aluminum tread plates, Meridian audio system, Bluetooth phone connection with audio streaming and 8” dual-view touch screen are standard across the range.
Sliding panoramic roof, contrast roof coloring, power door mirrors with memory, heated steering wheel, surround camera system, soft door close, twin blade sunvisor, navigation system, keyless entry, rear seat entertainment system, winged headrests and many other goodies along with numerous interior trims are optional on the lower variants and standard on the higher ones. Lots of smart cup holders and cubby holes throughout the house (yeah, it’s that big) makes it quite practical too.
Boot space is 32 cubic feet which can be extended up to 72 with rear seats folded down. Further, it is accessible via a fully electric split folding power tailgate. The cabin is spacious and with an extra 4” of rear legroom over the previous model it is literally a SUV cum limo.
Land Rover Range Rover Engine & TransmissionPowering the Range Rover are some well-engineered and durable set of engines. 3.0LV6 diesel is the base unit that delivers 258PS@4000rpm and 600Nm@2000rpm. Power delivery is smooth and adequate. It feels enough to satisfy everyday usability and some muddy escapades. Performance is well-balanced and it only feels underpowered and sluggish when you’ve driven the other powerful variants.
The 4.4 V8 diesel produces 339PS of power at 3500rpm and range topping 700Nm of immense torque at as low as 1750 rpm to 3000rpm whereas the mighty 5.0L supercharged beast gives 510PS at 6000-6500rpm and 625Nm of healthy torque from 2500rpm to the very 5500rpm. Both the engines are responsive and refined and do offers enough grunt to tackle any sort of rough terrain whatsoever. Petrol variant does the 0-100kmph dash in just 5.1 sec, which is faster than many Jags or Beemers. There is always a relentless surge in both the V8 engines to conquer whatever you might throw at it without even breaking a sweat. The well-insulated cabin (even the AC vents have mufflers) further ensures that the hard work of engines never seeps into the cabin.
All the variants gets wonderful eight-speed ZF automatic transmission and adaptive dynamics package. This makes the flow of power even more seamless and user-friendly in both urban and well as tropical jungles.
Land Rover Range Rover Performance and HandlingRange Rover with its now improved power to weight ratio and aerodynamic design is a great handling Rangie by miles. It is calm and composed and powerful and offers decent agility over the corners. It is definitely not as handy as the Range Rover Sport but it is a very well sought-out machine in itself.
However, the steering now feels a bit over assisted and numb and therefore it lacks the connected feel of the previous model. Nevertheless, the adjustable suspension system works wonderfully with various other ride controls to deliver a nice planted and plush ride quality even on horrendous surfaces.
The world-famous terrain response system with an additional auto mode takes the go anywhere ability of the Range Rover to a whole new level. Further, it is assisted by active rear diff-lock, hill descent control, dynamic and roll stability control, traction control and many other controls to keep it maintain the Land Rover legacy. Water wading capacity is an astonishing 914mm (even better than the Land Rover Defender). Therefore, the Range Rover is still the best off-roading vehicle out there with latest technologies and creature comforts that can explore almost any terrain and you won’t have to make an appointment with your physiologist afterwards.
What do we think about Land Rover Range Rover?Land Rover Range Rover is a world-class SUV with first-class comforts and possibly the best off-roading experience that money can buy. It don’t need any introduction whatsoever, it has always been a limousine that don’t care getting dirty now and then and it still is.
Range Rover offers a logical and stylish design which sets right in the long-running family fa?ade of the Land Rovers. The latest generation is much lighter, modern and well-engineered in almost every perspective. The all-aluminum unibody is a revolutionary milestone in the SUV engineering.
However, the best bit of Rangie is its near-perfect interiors. Cabin quality is top-notch and it feels somehow in the Rolls Royce territory and that’s saying something. Dashboard is logically laid out with the finest of materials and technology package available in market. Space is more than enough for both the rows. Equipment are simply numerous and with now improved auto terrain response system the ride is even better.
Engines are powerful and refined and offers decent choice to the customers. Adaptive air suspension makes the ride quality equally cozy in both city traffics and on off-roading trails. Electronic brake distribution, roll stability control and cornering brake control makes Range Rover an easy car to maneuver. Side, front, thorax and pelvis airbags further makes the ride much safer and confidence inspiring.
Price starts at a massive 1.7 crore rupees further going north to over 2.4 crore for the supercharged variant. This makes the Range Rover a playtoy for only a few privileged customers. But looking at the sheer increment in its demand over the years and the astonishing fame it possess it is quite hard to resist for the potential buyers. It’s not as composed as say its Sport brother and it is certainly not a valued option over Land Cruiser but it is a Land Rover and that badge itself is quite a thing. Further, this Rangie is one of the best model that Land Rover has ever built and it changes the whole concept of luxurious and uncluttered off-roading. And why not, Land Rover Range Rover takes you almost everywhere and that too in quite a panache and with majestic and regal sensation. And yes, it takes you there pretty fast as well. So, the Range Rover is a perfect tool to surpass mountains and to glide over water streams in the morning and still arriving at the golf-club for the evening bash and all that without even a hint of sweat over your fabrics.
Land Rover Range Rover CompetitorsNo one really. Either you’ll want it or you won’t. The sheer amount of functionality that if offers is very hard to get from a single piece of automotive product. Especially in India, it is too tough to find a SUV that can go in utterly hard conditions and yet remain calm and composed from the inside. The only real contender is the renowned Toyota Land Cruiser and Mercedes G wagen but while the former is as ugly and boring as a rotten mushroom, the latter is way too posh and sophisticated to take around hunting. Further, the Toyota is no way near in terms of equipment and desirability of the Rangie and the Merc is not that practical and at home in the wilderness.
