Mahindra SsangYong Rexton Overview

SsangYong, literally meaning double dragons, is an automotive manufacturer based in Seoul, South Korea. 70% of its market share was acquired by the Indian company Mahindra & Mahindra in February 2011. SsangYong Rexton is a midsize Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) that is based on the Mercedes-Benz M-Class platform. Styled by Giorgietto Giugiaro’s Italdesign studio, this remarkable SUV is capable of off-roading and performs on –road very smoothly.
SsangYong has dedicatedly worked on revamping the Rexton and post its first launched form in 2001, it has undergone considerable amendments. A revamped avatar called the Rexton W, where W stands for ‘Work of Art’, was released in 2012 in India by Mahindra & Mahindra Limited. It is marketed as the perfect combination of indulgence, refinement, style and performance. The highly anticipated SsangYong Rexton has set its foot firmly in India and is priced between 17.7 L and 19.7 L. It is available in both 5–speed manual and 5–speed electronic transmission versions. There are 4 rich colours available in the SUV – Satin White, Moondust Silver, Volcano Black and Opulent Purple. The domineering exterior is a visual delight and the projection headlamps look in the eye like an eagle. Features such as a smart chrome grille, L–shaped parking lights, chrome radiator grills, LED tail lamps, stylish ORVMs with LED turn indicators and 10–spoke alloy wheels lend a very stunning look to this SUV. All aspects of driving experience and passenger comfort are taken care of in the SsangYong Mahindra Rexton. These are attractive prices, as per SUV standards, and can definitely lure a price sensitive market like India. Though SsangYong is an automobile manufacturer that sells its products globally, it doesn’t enjoy wide brand recognition in India. Mahindra SsangYong Rexton Competitors

The Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) segment is the sole segment in the automobile industry to perpetually witness a positive growth. It is an ever flourishing segment and almost every family in India either owns an SUV or dreams of owning one someday. In terms of direct segmental competition, Rexton is pitted against It is inclined to compete with Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Hyundai Santa Fe, Renault Koleos, Toyota Fortuner, Chevrolet Captiva, Ford Endeavour and the likes.
Rexton is powered by a 2.7L, five-cylinder, Mercedes-Benz-sourced engine, mated to a five-speed automatic gearbox. SsangYong has improved the motor’s refinement and, on the move, it feels almost as smooth as an in-line six-cylinder engine. There is a linear surge of power and the long gearing allows the engine to pull well. However, the Rexton’s gearbox is slow to downshift, and kicking down hard on the throttle makes little difference. Stop-start driving in the city can hence be a little frustrating. In contrast, the Fortuner feels more on the ball. It responds readily to taps on the accelerator pedal, and even though it’s got just four speeds, it feels more eager to downshift. The 3L Toyota engine may be bigger than the Rexton’s, but it is the SsangYong that is faster. Despite its weight and power deficit compared to the other two, the Endeavour manages to set some decent times. The 100kph mark takes a respectable 13.8 seconds and it reaches a top speed of 170 kmph. As far as low speeds go, Rexton is very smooth but can feel bumpy at higher speed points. In terms of fuel-efficiency, Rexton is on the same pedestal as other SUVs.
