About Maruti Suzuki Cars

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd is the present name for the car company, which brought a revolution in the Indian car company, which was formerly called as the Maruti Udyog Ltd (MUL).  Maruti is a name associated with India, though presently the company is a subsidiary of the Suzuki Motor Corporation. Maruti holds a market share of nearly 44.9 percent of the Indian passenger car market. Maruti offers 16 cars in nearly 150 different variants over different segments. It also has its foot in various fields of the Indian business world such as Finance, insurance, driving schools and a lot more fields.

History of Maruti

Maruti has a very high range of vehicles, ranging up to 15 brands still in the market. It offered more than 20 vehicles including the brands discontinued by the company. It provides cars from the entry level Alto, hatchbacks, sedans and sports utility vehicles. Maruti is the first company in India to sell more than a million cars. It was also the first company to start mass production in India. The company also exports more than 50000 cars annually. The domestic sales of the company ranges up to 730,000 units per year.

Maruti 800 was the first car of the Maruti Udyog launched in India in 1983. It is the representative of eh Maruti cars in the minds of Indian people. The production of this historic car was stopped in 2012. Maruti 800 was the best selling car until the year 2004, which was later captured by Maruti Alto when it was launched. Maruti 800 is a four seater and best suited for a small family. The 800 was powered by F8B engine, with three cylinders in line and two valves per cylinder. The power produced by the engine is 37 hp at 5000 rpm and the maximum torque produced by the engine is 57 Nm at 2500 rpm. The standard version of the car was controlled by a manual four speed gear box. A limited version with five speed manual gear box was also offered in Maruti 800. The car gives a highway mileage of 22 kmpl and a mileage of 15 kmpl in city drive. The average mileage of the car is 17 kmpl.

The Maruti Omni is a micro van from Maruti launched in 1984. The car is the second vehicle to be launched by Maruti and the model is produced still now. The car was powered by 796 cc engine, which was used to power the Maruti 800 city car. It was a car run by petrol with a fuel consumption of 13 – 14 kms per litre in city drive and a mileage of 16 – 17 kms per litre in highway. The engine produces a power of 37 bhp at 5000 rpm and can give a maximum torque of 62 Nm at 3000 rpm. The car has a multi point fuel injection and a three cylinder lay out, with two valves per cylinder. The car is controlled by a four speed manual transmission gear box. The car features Mc Pherson strut front suspension with gas filled shock absorbers and a rear leaf spring suspension and shock absorbers. The front brakes of the car are booster assisted discs and the rear wheels are held by drum brakes. The car had only basic comfort feature and even a fan blower was not covered under the basic version of the car. The later versions of Omni were Omni E, an eight seater launched in 1996, Omni XL in 1999, Omni LPG, which is considered to have the lowest driving cost and Omni ambulance, which are the common type of Ambulance found in India.

Gypsy was launched in 1985, based on the Suzuki JimnySJ40/410 series. The car is a four wheel drive and has a longer wheelbase. The car has a 970 cc 4 cylinder 1.0 litre F10A Suzuki engine. At first the car was offered only with a soft top and later a bolt on hard top was introduced. The F10A engine churns out 45 bhp of power and runs on a four speed manual transmission gear box. The 4 wheel drive transfer case had two speeds and a freewheeling mechanism on the front axles. The front axles can be unlocked when 4 wheel drive is not used. This reduces the rolling resistance thereby increasing fuel efficiency. The latest version of Gypsy which was introduced in 2000 used a 16 valve MPFI G13BB engine which could give out a power of 80 bhp at 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 103 Nm at 4500 rpm. The latest transmission was a five speed and a reverse gear synchro mesh gear box.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is a Japanese Kei car, which is a small car in Japan and was launched in 1993 in Japan and in 1999 in India. R in the Wagon R stands for recreation. The car had a tall body, a short bonnet and nearly straight hatch back and sides so that the design increased the inner cabin size while still looking like a small car. From its launch in December 1999, Maruti Wagon R had undergone three up gradation in 2003, 2006 and 2010 respectively. The 2010 Wagon R was redesigned completely on a totally new platform. Initially the Wagon R was powered by a 1.1 litre F10D petrol engine of the Suzuki which produced a power of 64 bhp at 6200 rpm and a torque of 84 Nm at 3500 rpm. The newly launched vehicles were powered by the K series engine, known as K10b, which is light due to its aluminium body. This engine gives a power of 68 PS at 6200 rpm and a power of 90 Nm at 3200 rpm. Also an LPG version called the DUO was also launched in Wagon R model.

The Maruti Esteem is another best seller of the Maruti Suzuki, which was launched in 1994 but discontinued in 2008. It had many safety and comfort features even in the basic model. It has a capacity to hold five persons. The car was powered by four cylinder 1298 cc petrol engine with SOHC. The power output of the car is 85 bhp at 6000 rpm and the maximum torque is 110 Nm at 4500 rpm. The car is controlled by a manual five speed and one reverse transmission which is synchro meshed.  The variations of the car were Maruti Esteem LX, Esteem LXi and Esteem VXi. The Maruti Esteem LX is the basic model while the Maruti Esteem VXi is the high end variant attracting the most valuable customers and possessed more advanced equipments. The VXi had silver interior finish, body coloured door handles and lots of features that gave the car a supreme look.

Alto is also a small car from the Suzuki, which was launched in India as Maruti Alto in 2000. Alto was introduced in Japan in early years of 1979. But the Indian version of the car the Maruti Alto was introduced in India only in 2000 and was based on the fifth model Alto of Japan. Alto is liked by the buyers for its less cost and good fuel economy. Up to 2010, the Altos were powered by a three cylinder 796 cc petrol engine with four valves per cylinder. Later in 2010 a K10 Alto with 998 cc 1.0 litre engine was introduced. Alto comes in various variants in India such as Alto standard, LX, LXi, VX and Maruti Alto 800. The Alto 800 was launched in 2012, retaining the 796 cc engine. The car was controlled by a five speed gear box. A different version of the Alto 800 gets its power from CNG. The Alto 800 also has different trim levels such as LX,LXI, LXI airbags, Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 LXI CNGMaruti Suzuki Alto 800 CNG base and Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 CNG LX. The Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 CNG LX is a high end variant of the model and adds on many comfort features to the car such as can holders, climate control and power steering.

Maruti Suzuki Swift was launched in 2005 in the Indian market. During the launch, Swift was powered by a 1.3 litres petrol engine. There were many changes made to the engine in the life of the car and finally the all new third generation Swift was powered by 1.2 litres K series petrol engine and an alternate 1.3 liters DDiS engines. In 2008, a new version of Swift called as the Swift Dzire was launched. It is a sedan version of the Swift hatchback. It came as a replacement for the esteem which was dropped in 2008. It weighs a 35 kgs more than the hatchback version. There were some more modifications in the car such as the modifications in rear suspension and rear seat inclination. In 2012 Suzuki launched new Swift Dzire based on the third generation Swift, which is more compact less than 4000 mm in dimension and shares the same engine as its hatchback counterpart. It has a two tone black and beige interior which is not found in the hatchback, which is fully black. This was called as the second generation Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire.

The Maruti Suzuki Estilo was launched in India in 2006. It was also called as the Maruti Suzuki Zen Estilo and is powered by a larger F10D 1.1 litre MPFI engine as same as the Wagon R in the Japanese market. Later a facelifted version of Estilo was introduced in 2009, which was entirely different in looks and as well as performance. Estilo is a five seater and is powered by a K10B engine of 998 cc. It can give out a power of 68 PS at 6200 rpm and a torque of 90 Nm at 3500 rpm. The engine has three cylinders and the car features a five speed manual transmission. Estilo has a front Mc Pherson strut suspension with torsion type roll control device. The rear suspension is a coil spring gas filled shock absorbers with a three link rigid and isolated trailing arm. The Maruti Suzuki Estilo comes in various versions such as the Estilo LX, Estilo LXi, Estilo VXi, Estilo LXi green and Estilo VXi ABS. As the name suggests the Estilo VXi ABS has an Anti lock Braking System in its features list. The Estilo LXi green is a CNG variant replacing the petrol engine of the Estilo.

The Suzuki SX4 was a joint venture between The Japanese Suzuki and the Italian Fiat launched in 2005. The Maruti Suzuki SX4 is the Indian version of the same car with a slight cosmetic modification and 2 wheel drive technology, suiting the Indian Market and was launched in the year 2007. Initially the SX4 had a 1.6 litres petrol engine without Variable Valve Timing (VVT). It gave a power of 102 PS at 5600 rpm and a torque of 140 Nm at 4000 rpm. Later the engine was updated to a 1.6 litres engine with VVT. In August 2010, Maruti launched a CNG version of the same SX4. In February 2011, a diesel version of the car was introduced in the Indian market. This version uses a Fiat 1.3 liters DDiS engine with a variable geometry turbo. This is the same engine powering the Fiat Punto. The diesel engine version gives a power of 90 PS at 4000 rpm and a torque of 200 Nm at 1750 rpm. The car gives a mileage of 4.7 litres per 100 kms.

The Maruti Suzuki A star was launched in 2008 similar to the Alto version of the car. It is a five seater with spacious legroom and cabin space. A-star is a move from Maruti Suzuki to make an environment friendly car with increased mileage. Maruti A-star is powered by a KB series engine of 998 cc, three cylinders, 12 valves and a DOHC powertrain. The car would give 67 PS of power at 6200 rpm and a maximum torque of 90 Nm at 3500 rpm. The car has a four speed automatic transmission gear box which has higher acceleration and performance when compared to the five speed manual gear box normally featured in the Alto, which will also be available in a lower trim level. The fuel distribution is through Multi point injection. The car gives a mileage of 18.9 kmpl on highway and 14.6 kmpl on city drive. The average mileage when the Automatic transmission is used is around 17 kmpl. There are a lot of versions of A-star available in the market such as Maruti A-star AT VXI, A-star AT VXi Activ, A-star LXi, A-star VXi, A-star ZXi, and A-star ZXi optional. In the list LXi is the basic variant.

Maruti Suzuki Ritz is the Indian version of the Japanese Suzuki splash launched in India in 2009. The name splash was already registered by Ford and so Suzuki introduced its splash as Ritz in India. Ritz is one of the best sellers in India for the Maruti Suzuki, with a sales of more than 200000 cars on Indian roads. This number was achieved by the Ritz in a span of 37 months from its launch though it was not supported by a proper advertisement. Ritz comes in ten different variants, with five of them in a petrol engine form and the other five in a diesel engine form. The petrol variants of Ritz are powered by 1.2 litres 1197 cc K12M KB series petrol engine. It gives a maximum power of 85 PS at 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 113 Nm at 4000 rpm. It gives a mileage of around 14.5 kmpl in city and 18 kmpl on highways. The diesel engine variants of the Ritz are powered by Fiat’s 1.3 liters Multijet diesel engine. The engine capacity is 1248 cc and it delivers a power of 75 PS at 4000 rpm. The maximum torque attained is 190 Nm at 2000 rpm. This gives a mileage of 17.7 kmpl in city and 21 kmpl on highway roads.

The Maruti Suzuki Eeco was launched in the Indian market in 2010. The launch of the vehicle came like a replacement of the discontinued Versa from the Maruti Suzuki. Versa was a van type vehicle and Maruti could not come up with a minivan earlier and it launched the EECO. This car has a five seater and a seven seater option. The Maruti Eeco gives a priority to luxury options like the AC, integrated head rests, digital trip meter etc. It suits a business trip or a family drive and so the manufacturer calls it as a perfect car for every occasion.  Eeco has a diagonal shift assistance for a smooth diagonal gear movements rather than the straight line gear shifting. The car is powered by 1196 cc four cylinder petrol engine with four valves per cylinder layout. It gives a power of 73 bhp at 6000 rpm and a torque of 101 Nm at 3000 rpm. The fuel distribution is through Multipoint injection. The car runs on a five speed manual transmission. A CNG run version of Eeco called as EECO green range is also available in this model. It uses Suzuki’s advanced i-GPI technology.

Ertiga means swift with three rows and the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga was launched in India in 2012 is a seven seater Mini MPV. The ertiga is available in both petrol and diesel variants in India. The Ertiga is large and has a stretched platform. So the engines were tuned to get the more out of them. The petrol version of the Maruti Ertiga is powered by a 1.4 litres K14B engine. This is an advanced K series engine with VVT. It is a light weight engine and gives good mileage figures. The displacement of the engine is 1372 cc. The power of the engine is 95 PS at 7000 rpm and the maximum torque attained is 130 Nm at 4000 rpm. The diesel variant of the car is powered by 1248 DDiS engine with Variable geometry Turbocharger (VGT). This same engine powers the sedan SX4 of Maruti. The power of the engine is 90 PS at 4000 rpm and the maximum torque is 200 Nm at 1750 rpm. Both the petrol and diesel variants feature a five speed manual transmission as standard. The different variants of the Ertiga are Maruti Suzuki Ertiga LXI, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga VXI, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga VXI (ABS), Maruti Suzuki Ertiga ZXI, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga LDI, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga VDI, and Maruti Suzuki Ertiga ZDI.

The Maruti Suzuki XA Alpha was introduced in 2012 May, but has not come to the markets. It is expected to hit the market in 2013. It is a five seater and expected to cost around ten lakhs. The petrol version of the car utilizes a Suzuki K series engine and the diesel version would be powered by a Fiat engine.

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is known as the Suzuki escudo in the Japanese market. It is not made in the Indian facilities and is an imported car from Japan. The car sells with the same name as the Vitara in UK, Eastern European markets and South Asia. The Grand Vitara was launched in India in the year 2007.

Kizashi is also an imported car launched in the year 2011 in India. It is a midsized car, exported to many countries across the globe. The car is imported as a completely built in unit and hence comes under the tax limit of 105 percentage. This increases the cost of the car considerably up to Rs. 17.5 lakhs. The Kizashi has a J24B 2.4 litres petrol engine with four cylinders and 16 valves with DOHC. The displacement of the engine is 2400 cc and can produce a maximum power of 185 hp at 6500 rpm in the manual transmission variant. When added with a CVT, the engine power is 180 hp at 6000 rpm. The maximum torque produced is 170 lb-ft at 4000 rpm. It uses direct fuel ignition system which reduces fuel consumption and emission. The car gives 9 kmpl in city and 1 kmpl in highway. The Kizashi has not been sold in large numbers in India due to its price and large driving costs due to the petrol only version.

Though Maruti Suzuki is the largest car seller in India, some of its models have been discontinued due to various reasons. The main cars from Maruti which were discontinued in India are Maruti 1000, Zen, Esteem, Baleno, Versa, Grand Vitara XL-7 and the iconic Maruti 800. The Maruti 1000 was launched in 1990 and was discontinued in 2000. The Maruti Zen was a small car and was started in the year 1993 and the model was dropped in 2006. Maruti Esteem is a car sold in good numbers in India. It was launched in 1994 and discontinued in the year 2008. Maruti Baleno was launched in 1999 and was later discontinued in 2007. Maruti Versa is a micro van from the Maruti Suzuki which was launched in 2001 and discontinued in 2010. Grand Vitara XL7 is an imported car from the Suzuki, which was launched in 2003 and dropped in 2007.
