Maruti Suzuki Cars

Market Segment

Maruti Suzuki is the largest car manufacturer in India. At times, it has had more than 50% share in the passenger car market sales. The vast product portfolio of Maruti Suzuki cars in India ranges from entry-level cars like Alto to premium sedans like Ciaz selling under its banner.

Maruti Suzuki has recently launched its premium brand known as Nexa, which has its exclusive showrooms across the country. With emerging Nexa dealerships, it plans to expand the portfolio further and bring in more premium cars.

Price

Maruti Suzuki has a strong hold in the entry-level, sedan and compact SUV segments of the market with cars starting from as low as Rs. 3 Lakh and going up to around Rs. 12 Lakh.

Performance & Mileage

Maruti Suzuki cars are known for frugality, performance and reliability. Baleno RS and Swift are two of some serious performers from the brand. All the cars are highly fuel efficient. The petrol versions of Maruti Suzuki cars are generally good at 18-23 kmpl depending on the class of car and engine, while diesel engines are even more frugal and provide mileage in the range of 23-27 kmpl.

Features

Cars from Maruti Suzuki are now emerging as one of the best in terms of features. Features like cruise control, navigation system, etc., are now finding place in cars that previously had even air conditioning as an option. The expansive list of features includes automatic air conditioning, steering-mounted controls for audio and mobile, voice command, etc.

Following Baleno, all the latest launches offer a lot of safety equipment as standard. Safety equipment list includes ABS, EBD, airbags, childlocks, etc. Although entry-level cars do not offer these as standard, they are available as options with certain variants.

Roominess and Boot Space

Entry-level hatchbacks are the least roomy of all. Nevertheless, they can carry four people in comfort along with decent size luggage and are suitable for short journeys. Cars like Ciaz, S-Cross, etc., tend to be much more spacious and comfortable. In the middle, you would find Dzire, Baleno, etc., that offer good space and mix of practicality.

Talking about boot space, executive sedans like Ciaz offer about 500 litre, smaller sedans like Dzire offer over 300 litre and smaller hatches like Alto, Swift, etc., offer over 200 litre of storage space.

Transmission Types

Maruti Suzuki cars in India are the most versatile when it comes to transmission with options like CVT, AMT and AT. Cars like Alto, Dzire, etc., come equipped with AMT while premium sedans like Ciaz use a traditional AT. In the middle, there are cars like Baleno that use a CVT transmission.

All cars offer a two-wheel drive system, except Gypsy, in which you get driving modes and low range to choose from that let you drive over tricky sections easily.

Cost to Own

Maruti Suzuki tends to have low cost of ownership due to heavy localization of products and minimum imported content. Cost of upkeep of an entry-level petrol hatch or sedan would be somewhere around Rs. 25-30 K for a period of 5 years. For larger sedans, SUVs, etc., it’s generally around Rs. 35,000. Diesel cars tend to have 10-15% higher cost of upkeep than their corresponding petrol counterparts.
