Maruti Suzuki India’s Swift has been the most popular model in its portfolio, albeit it somehow got overshadowed by bigger hatches, like Honda Jazz and Hyundai’s Elite i20. Hence, Maruti had to bring a stronger contender in the arena to face off these B+ premium hatchbacks
Measuring 3995 mm long, 1745 mm wide and 1500 mm high, Baleno is a large hatchback with a bigger stance than Swift or, for that matter, arch rival Elite i20. The pictures of Maruti Baleno give a clear insight into the car’s imposing silhouette, which seems to be Maruti’s best work so far
The wheelbase measuring 2520 mm may not be the best in the segment but indicates comfortable space for passengers on the front and rear. Maruti has utilized the space well

The two sets of engines have been inherited from the petrol versions of Maruti’s Swift hatchback. The petrol versions feature Maruti’s 1.2 litre, K-Series, DOHC petrol engine, developing 62 kW at 6000 rpm and 115 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm.The diesel variants get the usual Fiat-sourced, 1.3 litre DDiS engine good for 55.2 kW at 4000 RPM along with 190 Nm at 2000 RPM
Fuel economy delivered by the petrol-powered Baleno is 21.4 kmpl. The diesel variants, on the other hand, are capable of pulling off 27.39 kms in a litre, which is the best in the segment
Braking and Safety:
Power is retarded by disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. Anti-lock-braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution is a standard feature available across the model series
Performance and Handling:
The petrol motor is far more agile than the lower power output version of 1.3-litre DDiS diesel motor. Even the automatic version is responsive; however, the diesel engine feels a little sluggish and noisy too
