Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Overview

Maruti Suzuki India was instrumental in introducing the compact MPV segment in India with Ertiga MPV back in 2012 and through its journey so far, the vehicle has received mild facelifts. The latest edition does not depict a comprehensive makeover, but it has some refreshing surprise up its sleeve. Externally, the MPV has induced cosmetic touch ups, visible prominently on the front. A dash of chrome on the outside transforms it from being strictly suave to slightly premium. Side view is mostly the same, except for redesigned alloy rims and electrically-folding outside rear view mirrors.
Rear adorns a chrome band, accentuating the outer appeal. Interiors do not get any styling alterations but offer a handful of new features, such as fresh upholstery, new interior trim colour options, driver-side auto-up function, climate control, keyless entry and Maruti’s SmartPlay infotainment system. Maruti Suzuki, India has added a new range topping variant, Z+, to the Ertiga range, which is available in both petrol and diesel options. Moreover, it sits above the Z variants in the model series. Although the engine set-up remains the same, it has been revivified for enhanced fuel economy, which means even lower running cost. The pivotal additions made to the Ertiga range are saved for the mechanical front, which include SHVS technology offered on the 1.3-litre DDiS motor and four-speed automatic gearbox on the VXi petrol trim. The SHVS-equipped diesel variants feature an idle start stop, torque assist, brake energy regeneration and a gear shift indicator. When launched first, the MPV had grabbed eyeballs for the lucrative pricing at which this considerably large-sized vehicle was offered. However, with the changes made to the MPV, the pricing has slightly bumped, but contemplating the rivals’ pricing, Maruti Ertiga price in India is still under an affordable range, which gets it brownie points over its competition. Moreover, the thickly-spread Maruti Ertiga dealership across the country adds to the viability of owning Ertiga.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Exterior

Ertiga has shed off the simplistic mask it adorned and is attired in a fairly-improved skin with most of the changes made to the face. On the front, a wider radiator grille running between the head lights, featuring three slats, embellishes the face. The front bumper has been revised, highlighted by a hint of chrome around the fog lamp housing. Air intake is relatively smaller, complementing the changed front apron. View from the side is almost similar to the outgoing model. The only additions made include reworked alloy wheels. Rear gets a couple of upgrades too, such as a thick chrome band running across the width of the bootlid, reflectors around the tail lights, reworked bumper and rear parking sensors. The body-coloured front and rear bumpers render uniformity. Even the outside door handles and rear view mirrors have been coloured in sync with the rest of the body. Outside rear view mirrors with integrated turn indicators feature an additional power folding function along with the regular power adjustable function. Wheel arches are tangibly masculine while the character lines on the side are subtle. Rear windscreen gets a wiper and defogger has also been provided.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Interior

Maruti has kept the interior layout unaltered, but a couple of new additions bring novelty to the cabin. The new upholstery and few additional colour options for the interior trims are among the new changes infused inside. MSI claims to have improved the NVH levels, resulting in a better-insulated and quieter cabin. Driver side window comes with the option of an auto-up function. Keyless entry/go, climate control and Maruti’s SmartPlay infotainment system with 7-inch touch screen sum up the extras embedded inside. While the SmartPlay system is offered on the top-spec trim, the rest of the variants feature an audio system with CD, USB, Aux-in and Bluetooth connectivity. Power steering is put in place for the assistance of driver. There are a couple of other features inset inside, such as a rear-view camera, engine stop-start button, steering-mounted controls for audio, etc. For driver’s convenience, MSI has affixed height-adjustable seat, giving flexibility to alter the height of the seat accordingly. Power socket is provided on the rear side and AC vents too have been fitted at the back for the comfort of rear passengers. Front as well as rear windows can be adjusted electrically. Second row has got 60:40 split seats, which can be slid.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Engine & Transmission

Engine configuration has been carried as it is from the predecessor, but the motors have been modified to yield increased fuel economy. The engine choices for the Ertiga range include one petrol and one diesel engine. Powering the petrol range is a 1.4-litre, K14 gasoline mill producing slightly less power (91.73 bhp) than the previous 93.7 bhp. Torque levels have gone minimally up at 13.25 kgm from 13.2 kgm. Fiat’s 1.3-litre DDiS engine known for its highly efficient nature gets SHVS technology, which, in turn, makes it even more frugal. Changes made to the diesel engine are in line with the ones evident on the Ciaz SHVS. The out figures, however, remain the same at 89 bhp at 4000 RPM and 200 Nm of torque at 1750 RPM. Maruti Ertiga transmission choices comprise a five-speed manual tranny equipped in the entire, save for the VXi petrol variant, which is also available in four-speed automatic transmission.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Mileage

Diesel motor featuring SHVS technology is claimed to deliver 18 percent increased economy. The ARAI-rated fuel economy for diesel-powered Ertiga stands at 24.52 kms in a litre. Petrol engine has also been tuned to yield enhanced fuel economy at 17.5 kmpl, which is 9 percent more than the outgoing version. Moving on to the petrol version, the automatic one can return a tad less mileage than its manual version at 17.03 kmpl.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Braking and Safety

Braking system gets ventilated disc brakes on the front and drum brakes at the rear axle. Maruti has stuffed the new Ertiga range well in terms of safety equipment; the entire range gets driver and front passenger airbags as standard fitments except for the entry level L variant, which features driver airbag only. Even the anti-lock braking system and electronic brakeforce distribution have been fitted across variants, leaving the base L trim, which gets airbag for driver side only. Besides all these features, seat belt reminder, seat belt pre-tensioners with force limiters, security alarm, driver side seat belt reminder with buzzer, day night inside mirror and front fog lamps are some of the other secondary safety fitments on offer.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Performance and Handling

Enhanced fuel efficiency and addition of SHVS technology on the diesel engine do not affect the performance numbers as much. In terms of acceleration, time taken to achieve 0 to 100 kmph mark is good enough. Maruti Ertiga’s top speed is somewhat imposing in both the engine options. Power is supplied quite uniformly and the engine revs up with the onset of turbo. Relatively, the vehicle performs better on highway where it gets to go uninterruptedly. That said, the MPV feels a tad uncomfortable within the city, especially around corners. Support from suspension is appreciable. It is soft and at the same time works well on uneven roads; however, a little thump is felt over sharp bumps. Similarly, the steering is responsive too. Overall, the diesel and petrol engines deliver commendable performance.

What do we think about Maruti Suzuki Ertiga?

Maruti Ertiga is a practical car for large Indian joint families who like to roam around together. The improved exteriors, additional features and automatic tranny option have upped the car’s credibility,. Although there is no change on the space offered inside, Maruti has worked on areas where it hung back when compared to rivals. Even though the boot space is insignificant when seven people are seated inside, mulling the price and mileage on offer, Ertiga is in a totally win-win situation. Moreover, on the performance front, it does not disappoint. Both petrol and diesel engines are promising, and with the reduced NVH revels, the cabin seem quieter than before, offering a better ride quality to the passengers. Overall, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is a car that you should look out for in the MPV segment for its practicality and frugal nature wrapped in an affordable price.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Competitors

Toyota Innova had its monopoly in the MPV segment until Ertiga came in to give it a jolt. If there could be a car that can and that has given a close competition to Innova, it is Maruti’s breakthrough model Ertiga. The three-row layout, lucrative pricing and availability of contemporary features on the MPV made it an instant hit. Many new models have been introduced post Ertiga’s launch, like Honda’s Mobilio and Renault’s Lodgy, but no one has been able to carve a niche in this segment, especially Renault’s Lodgy, which, despite being a viable offering, grapples to sustain good monthly numbers. So, pondering the condition of the above mentioned models in the domestic market, it is quite clear that Toyota Innova remains Ertiga’s biggest rival.
Ertiga has the advantage of Maruti’s value for money tag and the trust people have on the brand. Hence it has a cusp over its rivals in this segment. Given the new additions and an improved outer appeal, which was lacking before, Ertiga may be successful in toppling Innova; however, the race to the top is never easy. What we can vouch is that Ertiga will definitely find its way among the top grossers. Keeping our thoughts aside, let us compare these models in terms of various parameters that give a clearer picture of which one has an upper hand among rivals. Starting with the dimensions, Innova is a clear winner here being the longest, widest and tallest of all. Renault Lodgy possesses the longest wheelbase and hence has the largest cabin. Renault Lodgy may not have the highest displacement engine but it offers the highest power output. Luggage storing capacity is again the largest in Innova, leaving the rest of the competition envious. However, in terms of mileage and price, Innova lags behind. Maruti Ertiga diesel claims to deliver the highest mileage in the segment and hence this could very well work in favour of the latter.
