I recently took if off road and its here that the GV comes into its own. Compared to the likes of the CRV, the off road capability as well as its ability to take a beating is far superior. Everything works the way it was meant to and while at times you may crave for a little more power, its...

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara OverviewThe Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is the premium SUV launched by the Japanese auto major back in 2007. Its updated version - the ‘New Grand Vitara’ is relatively more powerful and masculine than its predecessor. The new honey-comb grille, front bumper, front and rear fog lamps, multi-reflector halogen projector headlights, pronounced wheel arches, 17-inches alloy wheels, electrically adjustable ORVMs, green tinted window glasses, mounted tail lamps cluster and stop lamps are the significant cosmetic changes, enhancing its stylish and sporty profile.
The true SUV appeal comes with the spare wheel that is attached to its back. The interior of the new Grand Vitara looks very sporty. It is well equipped with various rich features including easy to read MID (Multi Information Display) on dashboard, climate control unit, instrument panel, dual sun visors, rear view mirror, driver side foot rest, a stereo system with 4 speakers, 2 tweeters, sub-woofers and a centre speaker and more. The seats are comfortable with fine cushioning. The cabin is spacious enough to accommodate five passengers with good cargo space and lots of storage options.
Equipped with the 2.4-litre VVT (Variable Valve Timing) petrol unit, the new Grand Vitara delivers a decent performance. It offers a displacement of 2393cc. This powertrain comes integrated with 4 cylinder, 16 valve, DOHC and VIS (Variable Induction System) set-up. It is available with two transmission options - a five speed manual transmission and a four speed automatic transmission (only in top-end variant). It produces a peak power of 163.5bhp at 6000rpm and maximum torque of 225Nm at 4000rpm. In terms of acceleration and pickup, the new Grand Vitara is more prompt than its elder sibling.
It can attain 100kmph from stand still in just 11.7 seconds. However, the fuel efficiency is major drawback of this SUV. It offers a mileage of 8kmpl in city and 10.4kmpl on highways. The off-roading drivability is enhanced by the wheelbase of 2640mm and 200mm of ground clearance. The new Maruti Grand Vitara MT (with manual transmission) costs around Rs.22.68 lakhs, whereas its AT (automatic transmission) version is priced nearly Rs.24.61 lakhs (prices are ex-showroom, Delhi). If rumours are to believed, the company has decided to discontinue the Vitara due to its poor performance in the market.
Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara ExteriorBeing a Completely Build Unit (CBU), the new Grand Vitara has gone through no changes in terms of looks. It is exactly the same models being sold globally. The body refinements add appeal to its overall profile. It shares a great resemblance with Maruti Jypsy. The front fascia looks very sporty with all new front bumper, honey-comb grille, front fog lamps, body colored ORVMs and multi-reflector halogen projector headlights. The front windscreen is smaller, but doesn’t affect the visibility. There are two speed variable intermittent wiper and washer. Its pronounced wheel arches are well merged with its design. The side profile of the new Vitara is managed well by 17-inches alloy wheels, prominent sidelines, green tinted window glasses and body chromed door handles.
Having the Suzuki logo, the 17-inches alloy wheels are covered with the 225/65 size of tubeless tyres and radial. A spare tyre is attached at its rear. The mounted tail lamps cluster, rear fog lamps, stop lamps, rear window demister, rear wiper and washer (one speed intermittent) and body colored tailgate handle add more to its masculine personality. It measures around 4500mm (length) x 1810mm (width x 1695mm (height) with the total ground clearance of 200mm and 2640mm of wheelbase. The new Grand Vitara is available in six colors: Pearl White, Nocturnal Blue Metallic, Blueish Black Pearl, Phoenix Red Pearl, Silky Silver and Clear Beige.
Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara InteriorWith a perfect blend of sporty black theme and contemporary designing, the interior of the new Grand Vitara looks very elegant. The dashboard is conventional with a new instrument panel integrated with easy to read MDI (Multi Information Display) other distinctive features. There are lots of storage space like two front bottle holders, cup holders (each side), seat back pockets (on both driver and passenger sides), front and rear door trims pockets, floor console with sliding storage and armrest option, cargo room under floor compartment, tailgate storage pocket, cargo room shelf and more.
It is packed with a sound audio system with 4 speakers, 2 tweeters, sub-woofers and a centre speaker support. There is a power steering with tilt adjustment. The climate control unit, dual sun visors, rear view mirror, driver side foot rest and well cushioned seats are exclusive comfort features. However, the quality isn’t up-to the mark. With the total wheelbase of 2640mm, the new Vitara is quite spacious. Its rear passenger row is 60:40 split tumble-folding, which offers extra cargo space as and when required.
Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Engine & TransmissionUnder the hood, the new Maruti Grand Vitara has the 2.4-litre VVT (Variable Valve Timing) petrol engine that develops a peak power of 163.5bhp at 6000rpm and a maximum torque of 225Nm at 4000rpm. It delivers a displacement of 2393cc. This engine is boosted with 4 cylinder, 16 valve, DOHC and VIS (Variable Induction System) technology. Its top-end variant is available with a four speed automatic transmission while other comes with a five speed manual transmission. The new Vitara is able to mark 100kmph from stand still within 11.7 seconds, which is faster than its previous version. However, the fuel efficiency is a disappointing aspect. It gives a mileage of 8kmpl in city and 10.4kmpl on highways. The Throttle response of this new engine is far better than its previous version.
Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara MileageThe new Maruti Grand Vitara comes powered with a 2.4-litre, 4 cylinder, 16 valve, DOHC petrol engine that churns out a maximum power of 163.5bhp at 6000rpm and 225Nm of peak torque at 4000rpm. Despite having equipped with a advanced VVT (Variable Valve Timing) and VIS (Variable Induction System) technology, the Viatara is an absolute failure in terms of fuel efficiency. It delivers a mileage of 8kmpl and 10.4kmpl on urban roads and on highways respectively.
Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Braking and SafetyBraking performance of the new Grand Vitara is pretty impressive. The advanced ABS (Anti-lock braking system) with EBD (Electronic brake-force distribution) and brake assist help to improve the handling and performance of the vehicle. The 4x4 mode with four switching options (4 high, 4 low lock, 4 high lock and neutral) is a unique feature of the new Vitara, which distributes power to front and rear wheels. It improves the SUV’s performance in sand, mud, snow and even on bumpy roads. Being a premium SUV, the new Grand Vitara comes loaded with a good number of active and passive safety features that include SRS Dual front air bags, head protection design, seat belts with pretensioner, foot protection design on brake pedal, immobilizer, child locks, dead locks, door beams on front and rear doors, high mounted stop lamp, Automatic shift and key inter-lock (with its top-end variant only) and many more.
Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Performance and HandlingThe new Maruti Grand Vitara is the perfect off-roader with good handling. The 200mm ground clearance and 2640mm wheelbase enhance its drivability on rough roads. The large 17-inches alloy wheels not only add more to its looks, but improve the ride quality as well. It comes assembled with robust front McPherson Strut and rear Multi-link type suspension that enhance its stability and provide comfortable driving experience even on patchy Indian roads. The new powerful engine and acoustic cabin designing contribute to the low NVH levels of the vehicle.
What do we think about Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara? It is a sporty and masculine premium class SUV. The new Vitara comes with an attractive list of high-profile features like powerful engine, sporty and comfortable interior, lots of active and passive safety measures, proficient braking system, decent handling and performance. It is available in two transmission options – a five speed manual transmission and a four speed automatic transmission. However, the poor fuel efficiency may make you rethink over your decision. The new Grand Vitara is available within price range of Rs.22.68 lakhs - Rs.24.61 lakhs, which is little heavy on pocket. However, it is an affordable alternative than other luxurious SUVs like Ford Endeavour, Chevrolet Captiva, Nissan X-Trail, Honda CR-V etc.
