Maruti Suzuki Ignis Overview

Maruti Suzuki has forayed into the sub 4-meter SUV segment by launching the all-new Ignis in the Indian market. The Ignis has been making front page headlines ever since it made its first public appearance in the country at the 2016 Auto Expo in February. Flaunting an unconventional boxy-design, it would be developed at Maruti Suzuki's Gurgaon production facility; however, what is commendable and really appreciable is the 98.5 percent localization level that the company has managed to achieve in order to keep the pricing belligerent. The Ignis SUV is being introduced in both petrol and diesel fuel trims with AMT gearbox or Auto Gear Shift (AGS), as the company calls it.
Maruti Ignis is offered in four grades: Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha. It would be the third product to be retailed via the NEXA premium showrooms, after S-Cross and Baleno. The company took a time of four years in the development of Ignis with an investment worth Rs. 950 Crore. Maruti Ignis features a dual-tone shade at the interior with an array of comfort and convenience features, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The entry-level trim is deprived of a majority of basic features as it doesn't come with an audio system as standard. The gasoline and diesel engines have been carried over from the Swift with slight retuning for enhanced mileage. The Ignis would directly lock horns with the Mahindra KUV100 in the country.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Exterior

Maruti Ignis exteriors flaunts a tall boy stance and boxy design, somewhat similar to the Wagon R. The front fascia has a single frame chrome grille with LED projector headlamps, daytime running lights (DRLs) and fog lamps with chrome inserts. Being built on a new generation rigid platform embodying Suzuki Total Effective Control Technology (TECT), it boasts of cladding at wheel arches, while riding on trapezoidal 5-spoke all-black alloy wheels. It is also available with dual-tone exterior, identical to the Vitara Brezza.
Maruti has come up with unique personalization opportunities, with concepts like roof wraps, colour options in ORVMs, spoilers, fog lamp garnish, interior styling and more. Other personalization accessories include roof spoilers, wheel cladding, door-visor and cladding, and front, rear and side skid plate. Maruti Ignis colours include Pearl Arctic White, Uptown Red, Silky Silver, Tinsel Blue, Glistening Grey and Urban Blue. The dual-tone combinations available with Zeta and Alpha variants are Uptown Red with Midnight Black, Tinsel Blue with Midnight Black and Tinsel Blue with Pearl Arctic White.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Interior

The Maruti Ignis interior is finished in dual-tone Black and Ivory shades. The illuminated instrument cluster with carbon fibre texture on louvers and speedometer is delightful. The infotainment system gets smartphone connectivity experience with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Mirror Link - a first-in-segment feature! It is the first car in Maruti Suzuki's portfolio to offer Android Auto feature, which enables the occupants to connect their Smartphone with the infotainment, hence make calls, send and receive messages, and listen to music and audio books. In addition, Android Auto also helps in getting real-time traffic update via Google Navigation and access to other supported apps.
Maruti Ignis comes with decent cabin space for the occupants. The headroom and leg room for the front and rear occupants is praiseworthy. The boot capacity at 265 litre is also acceptable and it can be extended with 60:40 rear split. The cockpit-styled AC Panel, AC switches and EDM-inspired illumination in the speedometer are a few fresh things that Ignis offers.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Engine & Transmission

Maruti Ignis variants in both the petrol and diesel fuel trims come with engines carried over from the Swift. The petrol variants are powered by a 1.2 L 4-cylinder VVT engine, which unleashes the top power of 82 bhp at 6000 rpm and peak torque of 113 Nm at 4200 rpm. It is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission as standard, while an AMT gearbox is also available as an option. On the other hand, the diesel variants derive their power from the Fiat-sourced 1.3 L 4-cylinder DDiS engine, which develops the maximum power of 74 bhp at 4000 rpm and highest torque of 190 Nm at 2000 rpm. It is also linked to a 5-speed manual transmission as standard, while an AMT gearbox is available as an option.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Mileage

Maruti Ignis mileage figures range at 20.89 kmpl in the petrol version and 26.80 kmpl in the diesel version (all figures ARAI certified).

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Braking and Safety

It is one aspect where Maruti has truly excelled. Maruti Ignis specifications include dual front airbags, seatbelts with pre-tensioner and force limiter (PTFL), and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) as standard fitments. In addition, ISOFIX Anchorage - a child seat restraint system - is also offered as a standard feature with the entire Ignis variant lineup.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Performance and Handling

Both the 1.2 L petrol and 1.3 L diesel engines have been known for their decent performance and it continues with the Ignis as well. The diesel variants, in particular, have low NVH levels, resulting in fairly silent and insulated cabin. The handling is quite elegant due to smaller turn radius and well proportioned dimensions.

What do we think about Maruti Suzuki Ignis?

At the launch event, Maruti Suzuki’s head honcho announced that Ignis had received nearly 6000 bookings in the fortnight prior to the launch. This automatically shows the faith of Indian buyers in a Maruti product, and Maruti Ignis, with its salient features, sufficiently good ride quality and belligerent pricing, won't disappoint the buyers. In all, it is an excellent product developed for city driving, pre-dominantly.
