Maruti Suzuki MR Wagon Preview

At the 2012 Auto Expo in New Delhi, India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki presented the range of Kei cars from its parent Suzuki Motor Corporation’s stable. Kei cars - also known as K-Cars are essentially, the Japanese iteration of small vehicles, which includes passenger cars, vans and pick-up trucks. One such Kei car that Maruti Suzuki presented at the automotive convention in 2012 was the MR Wagon.
Powering the MR Wagon could be the new K-Series 660cc MPFI petrol engine that will be coupled with a CVT transmission. If launched in India, the MR Wagon could be offered in diesel and CNG options as well. There is no official word yet on whether Maruti Suzuki will replace the Maruti Wagon R with the more fuel efficient MR Wagon in the coming years or not, but it is quite clear that the Indian automaker had presented the model at the Auto Expo to gauge the initial response of the audience.

Maruti Suzuki MR Wagon Exterior

The Maruti Suzuki MR Wagon is a mini-MPV with a seating capacity of four passengers. It is a typical Japanese hatchback with boxy proportions, which looks quite compact from the outside and yet, is very spacious and comfortable on the inside.

Maruti Suzuki MR Wagon Interior

Contrary to the compact exteriors, the cabin of MR Wagon is quite airy and spacious. The overall dashboard layout looks neatly done. There is enough space to accommodate five adults in 2+3 seating layout. All the seats have good cushioning with legroom and headroom being in plenty. The instrument cluster is neat and falls easy on the eyes. The car is loaded with enough features, keeping in mind the price bracket and segment it falls under. Boot space is decent for a car of this size. Some of the key features include air-conditioner, power windows, adjustable power steering, height adjustable driver seat etc.

Maruti Suzuki MR Wagon Engine & Transmission

MR Wagon is powered by K-series 660 CC MPFI Petrol engine and it is expected to be available in both turbocharged and naturally aspirated versions. The turbocharged version develops peak power of 60 bhp and a peak torque of 97 Nm while the aspirated engine develops 54 bhp of peak power and 64Nm of peak torque. The car is expected to be offered with both manual and CVT automatic transmission as an option.

Maruti Suzuki MR Wagon Mileage

Mileage is important in this segment and one can practically expect an average mileage of 17-18 km/l (mix of city and highway driving) from this car.

Maruti Suzuki MR Wagon Braking and Safety

Braking system will leave you with no complaint as its front disc brakes and rear drum brakes offers effective braking. On the safety front, the MR Wagon is expected to offer 2 airbags along with driver and seat belts.

Maruti Suzuki MR Wagon Performance and Handling

MR Wagon is a perfect car for daily city commuting and manoeuvring in tight spaces but not confidence inspiring for aggressive turning and cutting through traffic at high speeds. The car lacks the top end punch for highways and due to its tall stance there can be a bit of body roll around corners.

What do we think about Maruti Suzuki MR Wagon?

The MR Wagon is supposed to be an important product for Maruti Suzuki in a sense that it rivals the likes of Tata Nano.
