Maruti Suzuki Ritz Overview

Despite changing business dynamics and market equations, Maruti Suzuki, India has always kept its focus on manufacturing cars for the masses. Maruti Suzuki Ritz is one of the top-selling products of the company, which has been designed for budget-conscious buyers. This hatchback gives a tough competition to Hyundai i10. Powered with a highly-efficient 1.3 DDiS diesel unit and all-new K12M petrol engine, both of its models are great performers. However, the interior quality is an obvious advantage with the Hyundai i10. With the 1.2-litre, 1197cc, K-12 series petrol engine, Ritz delivers a maximum power of 83.8 bhp at 6000 rpm and a torque of 113 Nm at 4500 rpm.
This engine is boosted with an MPFI (Mulit Point Fuel Injection) supply system, which improves its fuel efficiency and overall performance. With the increasing Indian traffic, the demand of cars with automatic gearshift has increased dramatically in the market. Considering the changing waves, Maruti launched an automatic petrol version of Maruti Ritz (AT) at a very affordable price. The 1.3-litre, 1248 cc, DDiS diesel version of Ritz offers a peak power of 73.9 bhp at 4000 rpm and a max toque of 190 Nm at 2000 rpm. The ERG system helps this power train cool down the exhausted gas recirculation. Both the engines are coupled with a five-speed manual gearbox and DOHC (Double Over Head Camshaft). The DOHC technology reduces friction, and enhances the engine’s life by producing higher torque and less emission, while meeting the BS IV emission norms. In terms of fuel efficiency, its diesel engine option is relatively better than the petrol variant. The diesel version offers a mileage of 23.2 kmpl (highways), whereas its petrol edition is efficient to deliver a mileage of 19.1 kmpl. Based on the Swift platform, it looks compact but little boxy. The front fascia of the car carries the conventional Maruti-like design with wide windscreen, headlights, well-defined wheel arches, body-coloured ORVMs, front bumper and alloy wheels. However, the rear feels very odd. The interior of the Maruti Ritz feels decently comfortable with enough room and good ingress/ egress, regardless its compact dimensions; however, the plastic quality disappoints. The top-end variants of Ritz are loaded with a good number of features and accessories, like power windows, central locking, seat belts, stereo system, alloy wheels, ABS/ EBD/ Brake-assist safety measures, rear defogger, rear wiper and more. The ride quality is decent, but gets sluggish at low speeds over the patchy Indian roads. Maruti Ritz is an economical deal having priced between Rs.4.56 lac and Rs.6.42 lac.

Maruti Suzuki Ritz Exterior

The front of Ritz is all inspired by the Swift, though little bulging. The headlights, wide windscreen, prominent wheel arches, body-coloured ORVMs and alloy wheels make it look matured. The car measures around 3715 mm (length) x 1680 mm (width) x 1620 mm (height), which gives it a compact appearance. Its wheelbase is 2360 mm.
From sides, the car looks good. However, the rear is a weird chapter. Its base variants look very unappealing with thin tyres. The LXi, VXi, LDi and VDi variants of the Ritz are provided with steel wheels, and 165/80 R14 tyre size, whereas its ZXi and ZDi variants are equipped with alloy wheels with the 185/70 R14 tyre size.

Maruti Suzuki Ritz Interior

The dual tone (blue + grey) interior of the Maruti Ritz looks vibrant, and brings a great sense of comfort and elegance. Despite having compact dimensions, it is spacious enough to accommodate five passengers. It feels airy with high roof and gets good leg room. There is no issue with ingress/egress, which is in fact equivalent to the Swift and better than most cars in its segment. With a generous boot space (236-litres), one can carry a good amount of luggage.
If you are still looking for more luggage, its rear seat can easily split into 60:40 to offer you more space. The interior quality is a little better than the Swift. However, door panels feel mediocre. The seats are well cushioned with fabric upholstery. The height adjustment option is available in its top-end variants only. The car features a digital trip-meter, temperature reader, tachometer, speedometer and digital clock. An audio system is accessorized with top-line variants of Ritz.

Maruti Suzuki Ritz Engine & Transmission

Maruti Ritz is available in two engine options – Petrol and Diesel. It diesel unit takes an edge over its petrol version in terms of efficiency and drivability. The 1.3-litre, DDiS diesel power train delivers a peak power of 73.9 bhp at 4000 rpm and a max toque of 190 Nm at 2000 rpm. It offers a displacement of 1248 cc. The engine configured with ERG system cools the exhausted gas circulation. On the other hand, its 1.2-litre, 1197cc, K-12 series petrol version churns out a peak power of 83.8 bhp at 6000 rpm and a torque of 113 Nm at 4500 rpm.
The fuel efficiency and engine performance are enhanced by the MPFI (Mulit Point Fuel Injection) supply system. An automatic petrol version of Maruti Ritz (AT) is also available in the market, with a four-speed transmission gearbox. Other petrol and diesel variants come mated with a five-speed manual gearbox. The DOHC (Double Over Head Camshaft) helps the engines produce higher torque and clear emission, which not only reduces friction, but also improves the engine’s life.

Maruti Suzuki Ritz Mileage

In terms of mileage, the Maruti Ritz is quite an impressive vehicle. Its petrol version, powered with the 1.2-litre, K12 series unit, offers a mileage of 14.1 kmpl in the city and 19.1 kmpl on highways. On the other hand, its diesel engine model with 1.3-litre multijet guise is more efficient and delivers a mileage of 19.5 kmpl and 23.2 kmpl on city roads and highways, respectively.

Maruti Suzuki Ritz Braking and Safety

Brakes are sound and supportive with smooth controls. The front and rear brakes are ventilated disc brakes and drum brakes, respectively. Advanced ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution) brake assist is available only in select variants.
The ABS braking system and two airbags are offered in its petrol variants, whereas the diesel variants come with ABS feature only. The other standard active and passive safety features include dual front SRS airbag, front and rear fog lamps, Immobilizer iCATS, front ELR seat belt (with pretensioner in its top-end variant), child lock, and central locking.

Maruti Suzuki Ritz Performance and Handling

The handling is one of the most disappointing aspects of the car; however, the rev-happy nature engine brings fun when it’s driven on high RPMs. The 170 mm of ground clearance helps the car maintain stability and improve drivability on the bumpy roads. However, it really doesn’t impress.
The suspension system is a standard one yet proficient enough. The front and rear suspensions are McPherson strut with coil spring and torsion beam with coil spring, respectively. The NVH levels are relatively lower than that in case of the Maruti Suzuki Swift. The engine noise isn’t audible in the cabin and one can enjoy a peaceful journey. The tyres don’t seem to do any exceptional job, but offer a decent friction and stability. Body roll isn’t a significant factor.

What do we think about Maruti Suzuki Ritz?

Maruti Ritz is a perfect hatchback for city driving. Its rich and spacious interior brings a great sense of comfort. The rev-happy nature engine delivers an excellent performance in terms of power, fuel efficiency, acceleration and pick-up. With conventional Maruti design, the Ritz looks simple yet very sporty. However, the rear profile is really odd. If your preferences are spacious interior, big boot space, high fuel efficiency and low maintenance costs, then Maruti Ritz is a perfect deal for you.
