Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Overview

Maruti brought to life the compact MPV segment with Ertiga few years ago and successfully broke the ice as for Indian market goes. However, the company did not hurry gliding into the compact SUV segment, which has been gaining momentum lately. With S-Cross, the company is not only marking its debut in the compact SUV segment, but also intends to shed off its ‘common man manufacturer’ image and hence eyes propelling into the more premium bracket that it has been longing to be recognized in. S-Cross is the first model under its premium range that will be followed by other cars in future.
What exactly is S-Cross and how fit is it to clash with the old gamers and new players in the segment? Do not mistake S-Cross to be a modified version or an oversized avatar of any hatchback. It has been developed from the get go, although traces of similarity can be seen from the phased-out SX4 sedan. Projected as a premium SUV, S-Cross is indeed a proper compact SUV that will rival the likes of Ford EcoSport primarily (in terms of size and price). The low ground clearance puts it on par with the hatchback-based crossovers, which it certainly is not. Get inside the cabin to be surprised by the chic styling done by MSI. The equipment list is notably better as compared to other Maruti Cars. There is generous space for passengers and the storage space within the cabin is pretty much; however, the boot space falls short even when the rear seats are folded. Available only in diesel variants, the S-Cross range offers two engine choices. There is no automatic variant on offer and the all-wheel system has been left out of the range for now. S-Cross is available at Nexa showrooms (for further details on Maruti Suzuki S-Cross price in India, contact Maruti S-Cross dealers in your city).

Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Exterior

Designing is certainly not as impressive as on rivals like Ford EcoSport and Hyundai Creta. Maruti could have carved it better. Most importantly, this SUV does not feel the size of a UV.
The low profile and low ground clearance pull it down in terms of the outer stance. Front, in particular, bears resemblance with the dated SX4 sedan no more available in India. A set of projector head lights infused with LED daytime running lights is the first thing you notice. Radiator grille in front comes with two-chrome slats. Lower bumper comes equipped with fog lights featuring chrome surrounds. The black cladding present all around lends the requisite sporty appearance. Side view is impressive. The SUV doesn’t seem to be under-tyred and the creases ascend from front to rear, stretched up till the tail lamps. Window frame gets four glass parts. The outside door handles and rear view mirrors are painted in body colour. ORVMs get integrated LED turn indicators and can be adjusted electrically. The 16-inch alloy wheels feature multiple spokes, though it looks clumsy rather than neat. A hint of silver garnish is evident on either side. Roof rails are equipped atop but they are not functional. Rear is impressive; the angular tail lights are striking while the integrated rear spoiler looks sporty. The M symbolizing Maruti has been dropped, featuring Suzuki’s S. Besides, a rear wiper, reflectors at the bottom of black bumper and a hint of silver insert ornate the rear profile.

Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Interior

The cabin is comfortable, space on offer is lavish and Maruti has equipped it well with fancy features. The pictures of Maruti S-Cross’s interior show that the cabin is enveloped in an all-black colour scheme. Certain cues, like the steering, have been borrowed from the SX4. Under the right-side air vent, buttons for fog lamp and parking sensor, and dummy switches have been placed. The blue backlit instrument cluster features data-instantaneous fuel economy, and average fuel efficiency and range. Leather covering is present on the steering wheel, gear lever housing and door armrests.
Leather upholstered seats are exclusive to the range-topping variant only while rest of the grades get fabric seat covers. Plastic quality, fit and finish is not very good and could have been better. The front centre armrest can be slid while the rear centre arm-rest gets a cup holder. Adjustable head rests are fitted on the rear seats. Storage space is generous too. Two cup holders are provided behind the gear lever and few cubbyholes are also available. Boot space isn’t extravagant. Even with the seats folded, it does not create ample space. Comfort goodies, such as keyless entry, tilt steering, power windows, illuminated glovebox, telescopic steering, steering-mounted controls for the audio system, automatic climate control, height adjuster for the driver’s seat, reclining rear seat, reverse camera, rain sensing wiper, auto dimming rear view mirror, navigation system, SmartPlay infotainment system and voice command are among the notable features incorporated inside.

Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Engine & Transmission

S-Cross is available in diesel engine options only. The engine setup comprises two diesel motors sourced from Fiat. Maruti S-Cross transmission options include two manual gearboxes. The Fiat’s low displacing, 1.3-litre Multijet engine, which has been received very well in India, is employed in the lower trim levels. Capable of producing 89 bhp along with 20.39 kgm, the motor is linked to a five-speed manual transmission.
For higher variants, Maruti Suzuki has housed a more powerful engine underneath the engine hood. Displacing almost 1600 cc, the potent diesel engine capacitates a peak power of 118 bhp along with a solid torque of 32.6 kgm. A six-speed manual transmission is paired to the diesel engine and the drive is sent to the front wheels. An auto box and four-wheel drive system have been skipped for now.

Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Mileage

Maruti keeps up the promise of delivering fuel-efficient cars with the new SUV S-Cross. The claimed mileage numbers as per tests conducted by ARAI are pretty impressive, which said that the 1.3 litre diesel engine has been tuned to yield 23.65 kms in a litre and the 1.6 litre powerplant is capable of returning 22.7 kmpl, which is a tad lesser than the former.

Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Braking and Safety

Disc brakes have been placed in the front and rear axles of the SUV, providing firm stopping power. To further bolster the stopping power, Maruti has fitted anti-lock-braking system available as standard from the Sigma (O) trim. Safety features have been fitted generously too, the SUV gets central locking, driver airbag (even in the base trim), front passenger airbag, anti-theft security system and reverse parking sensor with display among a few others.

Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Performance and Handling

Performance yielded by S-Cross may not be very impressive, but it certainly leaves a mark. Handling could have been better. The two-engine, 1.6 litre diesel motor is more capable. Although the tried and tested 1.3-litre multijet engine is no less but when compared, the former comes out as a clear winner.

What do we think about Maruti Suzuki S-Cross?

Keep the looks aside and S-Cross is actually a genuine attempt by Maruti to present something new to the customers. Despite taking a leap to the ‘premium’ range, Maruti has stuck to its ‘frugal’ instincts.
The cabin is refreshingly styled, offering some of the fancy features aboard. Safety has been taken care of. Even the base variant gets a driver airbag, which is commendable. Engine options are robust and propagate considerable power output. Although, it does lag behind in terms of handling, the rest of the positives make up for it. S-Cross is a strong contender in its segment and has the potential to take on the likes of Hyundai Creta and Ford EcoSport. The price of Maruti S-Cross gives a strong hold over the rivals.

Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Competitors

It is going to be tough for Maruti S-Cross since it is surrounded with capable rivals all around. Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster, Ford EcoSport and Nissan Terrano are among the closest rivals of the SUV. In terms of size, it definitely aims at Ford EcoSport; however, looking at the spiralling popularity of Hyundai Creta, the SUV does have to face stern competition. The design and exterior styling is Hyundai’s forte, and hence Creta wins hands down in this department. Availability of an auto box on the diesel variant gets it more brownie points while the presence of AWD in Duster gives it an edge. EcoSport, on the other hand, is a much better-looking SUV, but the engine power brings it a notch down in comparison to S-Cross. The equipment list and cabin space are lavish on S-Cross, and this saves it from losing to its rivals.
