Maruti Suzuki SX4 OverviewLaunched back in 2007, the Maruti SX4 was an instant success, but it lost its charm as soon as the diesel era took over the petrol. So with an aim to get back on track, the company introduced the 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine powered version in 2011. But it was probably too late to make a come back, as cars like Verna and Vento were already there in diesel option. However, there is no denying that the SX4 is a great product.
The dynamic dimensions, design and styling make SX4 one of the tallest sedans in this segment. Its crossover platform is all inspired by Suzuki and Fiat. The large headlights integrated with mesh grill, curvy front and rear bumper (well blended with three part airdam and twin reflectors respectively), gargantuan windscreen, large wheels and high-mounted boot give it a true masculine look, which is really hard to ignore. The build quality is certainly is on upper hand when compared to cars like Linea, Vento etc.
The interior of Maruti SX4 gives a perfect feel of a sedan. Its top-end variants come with an impressive list of features including good quality audio system with Aux/ USB, electric power steering, advanced ABS (Anti-lock braking system) with EBD, automatic climate control unit, steering mounted controls, I-CATS immobilizer, remote keyless entry, well cushioned seats with high-quality fabric and more. Powered with the DOHC 1.6-litre petrol engine with VVT, it delivers a peak power of 103.3bhp at 5600rpm and a maximum torque of 145Nm at 4100rpm. However, the fuel efficiency of this powertrain doesn't impress, which is 9.3kmpl on city roads and 15.5kmpl on highways.
Its 1.3-litre DDiS diesel unit produces a top power and torque of 88.8bhp at 4000rpm and 200Nm at 1750rpm respectively. This engine is boosted with a CRDi fuel supply system and a five speed manual transmission. On fuel efficiency front, its diesel variant proves a better performer than its older petrol option. It offers a mileage of 15kmpl in city and 21.5kmpl on highways. Both the engine options are equipped with 4 cylinders and 16 valves and well mated with a five speed manual transmission. The ride quality and handling of the SX4 is pretty impressive. When asked for price, one may hesitate to spend on this sedan, when its competitors are available at a lesser price. The Maruti SX4 costs around Rs.7.72 lakhs to Rs.10.30 lakhs.
Maruti Suzuki SX4 ExteriorWith all rational ingredients of styling and elegance, the Maruti SX4 appeals at very first glimpse. Based on the crossover platform, this sedan has a commendable build quality. With total dimension of 4490mm (length) x 1735mm (width) x 1560mm (height), it is the most spacious and tallest saloon in this segment. The decent exterior dimension rewards good legroom (2500mm) for all five passengers. The front fascia of the car is managed by large headlight cluster, curvy bumper with broad and three part airdam and mesh grille. There is a front gargantuan windscreen with a standard pair of intermittent wipers that offers it a semi-cab appearance.
The side profile of the Maruti SX4 is enhanced by well designed doors, body colored ORVMs, door handles, prominent wheel arches and large alloy wheels. All entry level and mid level variants of Maruti SX4 are configured with 15 inches steel wheels. The 195/65 R15 size of tyres are fitted in all variants. Whereas, the top variant of SX4 comes equipped with 16-inches alloy wheels covered with puncture resistant tubeless tyres. The 205/60 R16 size of tyres contributes to the overall stability and ride quality of the car. However, these wheels feel oversized in proportion to rest of its design. The rear looks mature and masculine with rear bumper integrated with twin reflectors, rear defogger, large windscreen and tail lamp cluster. The build quality is better than other sedans (2007-08 models) from this segment.
Maruti Suzuki SX4 InteriorFrom inside, the Maruti SX4 is quite spacious and elegant with rich upholstery and a good number of features like stereo system with Aux-in/ USB support, rear view mirror, a vanity mirror, sun visor, electric power steering, advanced ABS (Anti-lock braking system) with EBD, large glove box, leather covered front and rear door trims, automatic climate control unit, steering mounted controls, I-CATS immobilizer, remote keyless entry etc.
The seats are very comfortable with high-profile leather upholstery, which is available with its top-end variant only. Whereas, all other variants of SX4 get good quality fabric upholstery. It can accommodate five passengers comfortably. The high-mounted front seat provides great visibility to driver. With a decent inclination angle and legroom, its rear seats feel quite comfortable.
Maruti Suzuki SX4 Engine & TransmissionMaruti SX4 is available in two engine options - petrol and diesel. The car debuted in petrol version, which was launched in 2007. Equipped with the DOHC 1.6-litre petrol unit with VVT (Variable valve transmission), it produces a peak power of 103.3bhp at 5600rpm and 145Nm of peak torque at 4100rpm. The 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine packed SX4 delivers a maximum power of 88.8bhp at 4000rpm and a max torque of 200Nm at 1750rpm. This engine comes integrated with a CRDi fuel supply system that enhance its fuel efficiency. It is mated with a five speed manual transmission. The acceleration and pickup of this sedan bring thrilling experience to the car enthusiasts. The diesel engine powered Maruti SX4 can attain 100kmph from standby within 13 to 14 seconds, which is pretty impressive in this segment.
It can attain a top speed of 154kmph. On the other side, its petrol version is efficient enough to mark 0 -100kmph on speedometer just in 12.1 seconds and achieve top speed of 175-180kmph. In terms of fuel efficiency, the diesel version of SX4 is a step ahead compared to its petrol variant. Its DOHC, 1.6-litre petrol engine gives a mileage of 9.3kmpl on city roads and 15.5kmpl on highways. The fuel efficiency varies with driving style and other transformations, but still it’s very disappointing. Its 1.3-litre DDiS unit powered by the CRDi fuel supply system, intelligent gearing and ECU calibration results into less fuel consumption, especially on low revs. This engine delivers an impressive 15kmpl in city and 21.5kmpl on highways.
Maruti Suzuki SX4 MileageThe diesel variant of the SX4 is miles ahead on fuel efficiency front than its petrol unit. Its DOHC, 1.6-litre petrol engine offers a mileage of 9.3kmpl on city roads and 15kmpl on highways. Configured with CRDi fuel supply system, intelligent gearing and ECU calibration, the 1.3-litre DDiS diesel powertrian of the SX4 delivers 15kmpl in city and 21.5kmpl on highways. This engine performs well on low revs with less fuel consumption. However, the fuel efficiency of car is directly proportional to driving style and various transformations.
Maruti Suzuki SX4 Braking and SafetyBraking performance of Maruti SX4 is good, but scope of modulation and tuning are still there. All variants of the SX4 are fitted with front ventilated disc brakes and rear drum brakes. Its top-end variant (ZDi) comes equipped with advanced 4 wheel ABS (Anti-lock braking system) with EBD and a brake assist. The SX4 is loaded with various active and passive safety features including the 3-point ELR (Energy load reduction), two airbags (one for driver and one for the front passenger), front and rear seat belts with pre-tensioners and force limiters, side impact protection beams, child lock and i-CATS (intelligent computerized anti theft system) with engine immobilizer.
Maruti Suzuki SX4 Performance and HandlingIn terms of handling, the Maruti SX4 feels uncomfortable at low or average speed. The balance, stability and comfort of car are enhanced with its robust suspension system. Its front axle is boosted with the McPherson strut with an anti roll bar and rear one gets the torsion beam with gas filled shock absorbers. Its Massive tyres provide perfect grip over the roads. The ground clearance of the top-end variant is 180mm, helping it drive confidently over the bumpy Indian roads. However, the ground clearance of all other variants (entry level and mid level models) is 170mm, which too ensure great driving pleasure on urban roads. The NVH levels of the SX4 are quite impressive, even better than the new Swift.
What do we think about Maruti Suzuki SX4?With loads of comfort and advanced features, Maruti SX4 is a good value for money package. It is fun to drive even over the patchy Indian roads. However, the pricing could be an issue for the budget conscious buyers. But, in terms of maintenance costs, reliability, ride quality and resale value, it’s an excellent performer. So, if you are one of those looking for a car that has pure manly looks and runs well on almost all terrains (obviously not on off-roads), the Maruti Suzuki SX4 is the car for you.
