Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Diesel Overview

Diesel compact hatchbacks are touted to be the future of the Indian auto industry by many trend analysts and industry personnels. This of course, is not a completely surprising revelation, in an era where the cost of petrol has been steadily increasing at regular intervals. It is natural then, that the automakers would want to go back to their research and development team to figure out ways in which, they can best meet the demand of the market it caters to.

Wagon R Diesel Variants

India’s largest automaker Maruti Suzuki is reportedly, doing just that. We hear, that the automaker is currently developing a diesel-engined variant of its Wagon R hatchback. At the moment, the Ritz hatchback is the company’s most smallest entry-level offering followed by the Swift hatchback and the Swift DZire compact sedan - all of which, are doing exceptionally well in their respective segments. And now Maruti Suzuki wants the same response to its Wagon R hatchback as well. Hence, the Wagon R diesel variant is being planned that could arrive in the market by March 2015.

Wagon R Diesel Engine Specifications

At the moment however, the only diesel engine in Maruti Suzuki factory is the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre Multijet unit - which is a tad bigger to be fitted in the Wagon R. However, Mr R C Bhargava, the chairman of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. stated a few months ago that the Italian automaker Fiat is currently developing smaller 1.0-litre diesel unit as well, which could be used to power the company’s smaller cars. This 1.0-litre unit could be a three-cylinder unit, similar to the one seen in Chevrolet Beat diesel that was also derived from the 1.3-litre Multijet unit - developed jointly by Fiat and Chevrolet.
