Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Stingray Overview

India’s leading carmaker, Maruti Suzuki has given an extension to its hatchback family by introducing the new WagonR Stingray. Based originally on the WagonR, the Stingray is a more upmarket product than the former and has three new variants - LXi, VXi and VXi O (With ABS and driver side airbag).
Launched to target young car buyers, Maruti Suzuki WagonR Stingray has a sporty design and an array of exciting features, like multi-function steering wheel with mounted controls, anti-lock braking system, driver side airbag, stereo system with speakers, comfortable interior, trendy alloy wheels and much more. However, most of these features are only available with the top-end variant. The design elements that helped the Stingray look sportier and more aggressive than the standard WagonR are the new clamshell bonnet, radiator grille and headlight cluster integrated with projector lamps.
When it comes to performance, Maruti WagonR Stingray has no improvement over the regular WagonR as it has the same 1.0-litre K-series, three-cylinder petrol guise, capable of producing a maximum power of 67.1 bhp at 6200 rpm and a peak torque of 90 Nm at 3500 rpm. It returns the mileage of 20.51 kmpl, certified by the ARAI. With more style and features, the new WagonR Stingray is certainly a much better version of the WagonR. However, it still isn’t as good as some other products in its segment, such as Chevrolet Beat, Nissan Micra Active and Ford Figo.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Stingray Exterior

With refreshing and sporty exterior, the new WagonR Stingray is certainly a more appealing product than the WagonR and is surely going to attract young buyers. Both the WagonR and Stingray share most of their design, but the latter has more aggressive looks with new headlight cluster integrated with projector lamps. It is surrounded with stylish radiator grille that further adds to the aggressive appeal of the car. However, the clamshell bonnet and front bumper still give it a boxy feel.
Although the side profile largely remains unchanged, a new set of alloy wheels and removal of rubber-made side strip have helped the car look different from the WagonR. On the rear side, Maruti WagonR Stingray’s tail lamps cluster looks similar to that of the WagonR. The Stingray badge and company’s logo embossed near the chrome strip of boot lid give a distinct identity to the new WagonR. The rear windshield has defogger with a wash and wipe function. The brand new Maruti WagonR Stingray has an overall length of 3636 mm, width of 1475 mm and height of 1670 mm. Its wheelbase stands at 2400 mm, which promises spacious interior. Its minimum ground clearance and turning radius are 165 meters and 4.6 meters, respectively. So with these figures, the WagonR Stingray is the same as the standard WagonR in terms of dimensions. The WagonR Stingray is available in five colors: Midnight Blue, Passion Red, Glistening Grey, Silky Silver and Superior White. The side profile of car is enhanced with a new set of gun metal alloy wheels. The top-end variant of WagonR Stingray is available with powerful 14-inch alloy wheels and tubeless radial tyres. The tyre size is 155/ 65 R14, which is same in all WagonR Stingray variants. These tyres offer fine grip and stability on Indian roads. On the other side, the entry level variant comes with robust 14-inch steel wheels. A spare wheel with some essential tools is affixed in its boot section.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Stingray Interior

Inside the cabin, the Stingray looks similar to the standard WagonR. However, enough changes given to the car help it look more upmarket and distinct. The additional features given to the car are all-black interior theme, a USB and AUX-in compatible audio system, steering wheel with audio control mounted in, leather-wrapped steering wheel and a blue-back lit instrument cluster. What remains unchanged is the dashboard.
The AC vents are prominently placed on the central console. One can enjoy his/her favorite music with its advanced audio system having USB and Aux-In ports with various controls. The seats are comfortable with 3D effect quality fabric upholstery having ‘Stingray’ written on it. However, the plastic quality still needs improvement. With dual tone combination of matt black and gloss black finish, its door trims look decent. Bottle holders and speakers are given on the doors. Besides the prominent cosmetic changes, the interior of Maruti WagonR Stingray has got few modifications, but seating comfort is still an area that needs improvement. The new WagonR Stingray is available with 2+3 seating arrangement with good shoulder room for five passengers. The boot space is good enough to carry limited luggage. The 180-litre boot space of car feels very small in comparison to the Hyundai i10’s 225 liters. The car’s audio system supports USB and Aux-In ports, and to add more convenience for the driver, audio controls are now mounted on the three-spoke steering wheel. All three variants of the Maruti WagonR Stingray come loaded with various advanced accessories with an option of interior customization. The car has several accessories that are standard across all the variants, though one can customize the car from the wide variety of the accessories offered by the manufacturer, like floor mats, steering and gear knobs, steering covers, window sun shades, body graphics, rear spoiler, etc.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Stingray Engine & Transmission

Under the hood, the new WagonR Stingray has an efficient 1.0-litre, K series petrol engine with three-cylinder set-up. The engine belts out a maximum power output of 67.1 bhp at 6200 rpm and 90 Nm at 3500 rpm. The same engine also does duty to the regular WagonR, Alto K10 and A-Star. The multi-point fuel injection system further enhances its performance. Coupled with the engine is a five-speed manual transmission gearbox, which transmits power to the front wheels.
Despite having a small 1.0 litre petrol engine, the WagonR Stingray easily touches the 100-110 kmph mark, which speaks for the efficiency of MSI engines. What is more exciting is its competency to touch the 100 kmph speed from standing still in mere 15-16 seconds, which is actually a great figure for the car of this stature. However, till the third gear, the vehicle gets quite vocal due to wheel and engine noise, and it’s clearly audible inside the cabin as well. Powered with the 1.0 litre, K-series petrol engine, this hatchback delivers a peak power of 67.1 bhp at 6200 rpm and the maximum torque of 90 Nm at 3500 rpm. The lightweight KB10 aluminum-based petrol engine comes integrated with three cylinders and is perfectly mated with a five-speed manual gearbox. The power is transmitted to the front wheels. There is a lag till 2000 rpm, but as soon as one crosses that mark, it gets smoother.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Stingray Mileage

Maruti Suzuki is known for its fuel-efficient cars and the brand new WagonR Stingray is no exception here. Powered with a 1.0 litre petrol engine, the Stingray offers an impressive 20.51 kmpl of mileage under the standard conditions, but this comes down to 15-16 kmpl in the city traffic. With such an exceptional mileage figure, the WagonR Stingray is better than most of its competitors.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Stingray Braking and Safety

The Stingray comes packed with various active and passive safety features, like Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), which prevents wheel locking in panic braking situations and allows you to steer. There is a driver SRS airbag that reduces the impact of collision at the time of accidents. The halogen lights are incorporated for better visibility and reduce the danger, especially on highways. The safety belts are attached to all seats and act as safeguards for all passengers. The powerful front fog lamps enable the driver to drive the car even in bad weather conditions. The child lock helps the driver to drive the car without any tension when you are with kids. The other safety features include central locking system, centrally-mounted fuel tank, side impact beams, a day-and-night rear view mirror, a collapsible steering column and much more.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Stingray Performance and Handling

Being a tall hatchback, the new WagonR Stingray handles good if driven on lower speeds, but driving it on higher speeds and edges can be irritating. The vehicle has too much body roll, which one can feel at almost all corners and turns. Its power steering system brings great driving pleasure even in heavy city traffic. The suspension of the car is quite efficient and powerful. The front axle is equipped with McPherson Strut type of suspension and the rear one is integrated with isolated trialing link. Both the suspensions are assisted with a suspension system loaded with coil spring.
The top-end variant of new WagonR Stingray comes powered with a sound braking system of ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), whereas the other two variants come with the conventional braking system. Its front and rear brakes are highly efficient during panic braking situations. The front and rear wheels have been incorporated with ventilated disc brakes and drum brakes, respectively. The all-new Maruti WagonR Stingray offers decent stability on highways. You can easily hear the engine and wheel noise inside the cabin, which gets irritating sometime.

What do we think about Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Stingray?

The Stingray is definitely a much-better looking and upmarket car than the regular WagonR, but the noisy engine is something that disappoints. Carrying the same 1.0-litre, K-Series engine found on the regular WagonR, the engine is very noisy and in fact one can hear the wheel noise inside the cabin as well. Also, it's not a highway car, it's strictly a city car with power output figures of 67 bhp and 90 Nm. So, if you are looking for a better-looking WagonR with more features, the WagonR Stingray is all for you.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Stingray Competitors

Maruti WagonR Stingray vs Hyundai Grand i10
Although, both the WagonR Stingray and Hyundai Grand i10 belong to different segments, their pricing make them close competitors. Starting prices for the Stingray and Grand i10 are Rs 4.19 lac and Rs 4.29 lac, respectively.
Based on the Hyundai BA platform, the Grand i10 is a good-looking car, thanks to its fluidic sculpture-inspired design. The WagonR Stingray is certainly a better-looking car now, but the sportiness and youthfulness character of the Grand i10 make it a clear winner in this department. Engine is a defining factor of a car and the Grand i10 with the 1.2-litre Kappa2 is surely a great performer in urban conditions. It delivers a maximum power of 81.9 bhp at 6000 rpm and a peak torque of 113 Nm.
On the other hand, the new WagonR Stingray with the rev-happy 1.0-litre K-Series engine is a good performer in city conditions. It churns out a maximum power and torque of 67.1 bhp at 6200 rpm and 90 Nm, respectively. But if both the cars are compared, Hyundai Grand i10 is a less tiring vehicle with better insulation and almost no NVH levels. The smooth steering and apt seating position help the Hyundai Grand i10 perform well in the city traffic. The small turning radius (4.8 mm) makes it breeze at corners. There is a little body roll, but it balances out with its perfect body build. Coming to the WagonR Stingray, in terms of ride quality and handling, it is a decent performer. However, the body roll and NVH levels are the two concerning issues with this hatchback. While changing gears, one needs to exert more energy, whereas the gears are quite smooth in Hyundai Grand i10. On the fuel efficiency front, the WagonR Stingray marks little higher grades by offering a mileage of 19 kmpl in the city and that of 21 kmpl on highways. On the other hand, the Grand i10 offers a mileage of 17 kmpl and 19 kmpl on urban roads and highways, respectively. When it comes to looks and drivability, the Hyundai Grand i10 proves to be a great deal. But in terms of fuel efficiency and maintenance, the WagonR Stingray is a perfect choice. The top-end variants of Hyundai Grand i10 are costly affairs, while the top-end WagonR Stingray variant costs around Rs.4.75 lac (ex-showroom, Delhi) only.
