Mercedes-Benz A-Class Overview

Mercedes’ affordably priced A-Class hatchback has been on fore luring luxury enthusiasts to own the star badged hatch. Launching A-Class came across as a smart move from Mercedes Benz India which was earlier confined to bringing highly priced premium cars (saloons, coupes and SUVs). Most importantly, the company’s portfolio lacked a hatchback in a market where hatches are the core of auto cos’ line-up. Agreed that premium brands did not peek into this segment, but with the launch of competitively priced vehicles by German counter parts, Mercedes decided to dive into the ‘rightly priced’ segment which currently offers variety of body-styles

In other words, the first time luxury car buyers segment as we can call it saw Mercedes’s venture with this particular offering. In its itinerary so far, the vehicle has seen a couple of mild upgrades, the latest generation model currently being retailed saw a couple of cosmetic updates making the car look plusher. Nothing changes under the skin, hence the A-Class range continues running on the same hardware as its predecessor. Available in diesel as well as petrol engine choices, the hatch is offered in two variants only.

Transmission duties are performed by seven-speed dual clutch gearbox, the dynamic select system enables to choose between four driving modes. Exterior and interior styling is done splendidly, as for the features aboard, Mercedes Benz packs its cars well both in terms of comfort and safety. Mercedes Benz A-Class is the most affordable vehicle in the company’s India line-up priced below B-Class. Price in India is on par with the rest of the entry level premium vehicles offered by other luxury car makers.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class Exterior

Mercedes Benz may have tapped into the affordable segment, but it has certainly not compromised with the styling both inside and outside. As can be seen in the Mercedes Benz A Class pictures, the car has undergone a couple of styling tweaks. Up front, black finished diamond radiator grille featuring one louver is equipped flanked by the LED high performance head light. Flare effect LED daytime running lights are also fitted in front. Five-spoke light alloy wheels coloured in black featuring high-sheen finish ornate each side. Wing mirrors with power adjusting/folding functions and integrated turn indicators are provided on driver as well as co-passenger side. Panoramic glass sunroof comes with power adjusting function along with electric sunblind and obstruction sensor. Rear windscreen gets intermittent wiper and heated function with timer. For enhanced visibility, fog lamps are available at rear.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class Interior

Sports seats are upholstered with premium fabric and feature contrasting top stitching. Driver seat and co-passenger seats can be adjusted electrically as well as they also get lumbar support. Additionally, the driver’s seat gets memory function for retaining settings. Honeycomb trim inside the cabin add to the plush styling. Other significant features aboard include instrument cluster with multifunction colour display, 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel with 12 function key, Nappa leather covering around steering wheel and shift lever, 11.4 cm colour display in instrument cluster with multifunction display, trip computer in multifunction display with current consumption indicator and illuminated glove box among others. Mercedes has packed plethora of comfort and entertainment system in the cabin, some of the significant gizmos on board are ECO start/stop function, height adjuster fro steering wheel, air conditioning system with dust filter, power windows with one-touch control & obstruction sensor, rear centre armrest with cup holders, reversing camera with dynamic guide lines in the media display, speed sensitive volume control, colour display with 17.8 cm screen and audio system with CD radio dual toner, MP3 etc.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class Engine & Transmission

The premium hatchback is available in two engine choices; one is the 2.2 litre, diesel powerplant outputting 136 kW between 3600 to 4400 RPM along with 300 Nm between 1400 to 3000. Petrol variants house 1.6 litre gasoline engine engendering peak power and torque of 122 kW at 5000 and 200 Nm between 1250 to 4000 RPM. Top speed offered by Mercedes Benz A Class is 210 Kmph for the diesel variant and 202 Kmph for the petrol version. A-Class transmission is the seven-speed dual clutch gearbox inherited from the previous version.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class Mileage

Fuel efficiency claimed to be delivered by the hatchback is decent but not very impressive, in fact this is one area where the hatchback lags behind and however belonging to premium class substantially reduces the incapability to return excellent numbers. In comparison to rivals in the segment, the hatchback vouches for pretty viable economy.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class Braking and Safety

Mercedes has stuffed the car with ample features ensuring a safe ride for the occupants, features that have been tucked in the car include electronic stability program, curve dynamic assist, acceleration skid control, brake assist with automatic recognition of emergency braking situations and assisted braking, adaptive brake with HOLD function. Other than these, the hatchback also get brake drying and hill start assist, attention assist, electric parking brake, automatic dimming function, interior mirror with automatic dimming, crash responsive emergency lighting, disc brakes all around, engine immobiliser, automatic locking doors with emergency opening, central locking with switch and crash sensor with emergency opening, automatic locking doors with emergency opening. Primary safety equipment aboard are airbags for driver and front passenger, side-impact pelvis airbags for driver & front passenger, seat occupancy sensor for front passenger seat etc.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class Performance and Handling

Evaluating the hatchback on performance front reveals the capability that lies under the hood. The diesel engine is especially more agile, power delivery is spot on, the hatchback runs in controls, there is minimal body roll. Smooth suspension and apt ride height adds to the driving delight. The seven-speed auto gearbox is responsive too complementing the engines well.

What do we think about Mercedes-Benz A-Class?

With the reduced pricing A-Class emerges a viable offering not just in the entry level premium hatchback segment, but also in the affordable luxury segment. A-Class, in all ways is a potential vehicle that has got most of the parameters right. The cabin space and interior comfort is top notch; moreover, ride height and performance are also appreciable.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class Competitors

In the premium entry-level hatchback segment, A-Class will fight with the likes of Volvo V40 and BMW 1-Series. From the point of view of pricing, A-Class is aggressively tagged having a cusp over rivals in the segment. In terms of styling, A-Class is imposing, giving rivals a run for their money.
