MG ERX5

MG ERX5 is an electric SUV being developed for the Indian market by the SAIC owned MG Motors. The company is set to make its foray into the Indian market and is prepping a series of models for the same. Expected to join MG Motors’ product portfolio, the MG ERX5 was previewed at the Global Mobility Summit (MOVE) earlier in September 2018. For those not in the know, MG RX5 is primarily a rebadged version of Roewe, another brand owned by SAIC. Claimed to offer an excellent range of 425 km, the MG ERX5 price in India is likely to start from Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom).

Taking into account the MG ERX5 images, the SUV will features sharp contours. That said, the boastful proportions will give it bulky semblance and allow ample space inside the cabin. On the styling front, the MG ERX5 was seen featuring multi-slat chrome grille in front that meets seamlessly with the pulled back sleek headlamps. The bold shoulder line accentuates the masculine look and is gets chunky alloys as well as other elements that bolster the robust SUV-ish stance such as side cladding, roof rails, etc. As for the MG ERX5 colour options, it is like to be offered in multiple shades.

The Roewe ERX sits on a long wheelbase measuring 2700 mm, however it is yet not known if the India-spec MG ERX will carry over the same proportions or receive some tweaks. Talking of the interior styling, there is yet no clarity on that front, though the cabin is expected to be well laid-out. As for the MG ERX5 feature list.

The Roewe ERX5 packs a 48.3 kWh battery. The electric unit powering the SUV puts out top power of 116 bhp. As for the MG ERX5 specifications for the Indian market, there is yet no confirmation on the electric set-up as well transmission that will be used in the SUV.

While the Roewe ERX5 delivers an imposing range of 425 km at a speed of 60 km/h, though details on the India-spec MG ERX5 are yet to be revealed by the company.

The braking set-up is likely to comprise disc units at both ends. The safety brigade on the compact SUV could include primary tech such as multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, rear view camera and a bunch of other driver assisting features.

Since there is no clarity on the electric system and transmission unit to be used on the upcoming compact SUV, we will reserve our opinion on the MG ERX5 review and wait until we get to drive the model.

If launched in India, the MG ERX5 could emerge as a strong player in the segment, though lack of network could work against the model.

In the electric SUV space, the upcoming MG ERX5 will go up against a bunch of other electrified versions of existing models or all-new models set for their debut in the coming years.
