Mini Clubman PreviewBMW India brought its quirky Mini brand into India back in 2012 and with it gave us four models from the British marquee. However, the one that was missing from the brand’s portfolio in India was the Mini Clubman premium hatch that has been in the international markets since 2008. Now that the current Clubman has reached its mid-life, the model is being called in for a refresh. And this new avatar of the Mini Clubman with five-doors was recently presented in Concept form at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show and is expected to hit the international markets by the end of 2014. Post its international debut, we hope to see the new Mini Clubman in showrooms in India sometime in 2017.
Mini Clubman Design
Design-wise, the biggest change made to the Clubman is to its dimensions, making the hatchback more spacious and practical. And of course, the adoption of a five-door model, instead of the earlier three-door arrangement.
The new model is longer by 262mm, wider by 161mm and taller by 24mm when compared to the current model. With the stretched out proportions, the new Clubman measures 4,223mm in length, 1,844mm in width and 1,450mm in height. Though the model previewed in Geneva was in Concept form, it looked pretty close to the real deal. The 2016 Clubman seems to have retained all the conventional barn-style rear doors of its predecessors. However, the quirky layout of the front doors on the current model that featured single rear hinged nearside door has been ditched for a more traditional setup with four front hinged frameless doors. The boot compartment gets a split tailgate.
Mini Clubman Interior
On the inside too, the new Clubman has opted for clean and sophisticated layout for the dashboard, instead of the eccentric design seen in the current model. The trademark round centre dial, which houses a high-res screen however, has been retained and so has the main dials, which are housed within the instrument panel behind the steering wheel. The Clubman Concept also boasts of being the first Mini to feature the so-called ‘’AirBreather” at the side, which echoes the design theme of the air curtains in the front apron and cuts sharply into the surrounding black body band.
Mini Clubman Variants
Under the hood, the new Clubman is expected to get the same range of engine and powertrain options, which currently serve the smaller three-door hatchback, viz. a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder petrol unit and a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel unit. The engine can be had with an either 6-Speed manual or a 6-Speed automatic transmission.
