Nissan Sunny Overview

Nissan Motor India Private Limited, the Indian subsidiary of Japanese autogiant Nissan, owns a fleet of vehicles, belonging to almost every segment from hatchback to SUV in the country. In the entry-level saloon segment, it offers the Sunny sedan which is truly a royal wagon to drive. Nissan Sunny hit the Indian shores firstly in 2011 and it was received considerably well by the auto freaks in India. But along the course of time it lost its glory and hence, in an awe to re-create the enigma and panache, the company has launched the second generation of the entry-level saloon in the country being cited as 'Nissan Sunny'. It is more promising, advanced and striking than its predecessor and looks complete.
Nissan Sunny Overview
Sunny sedan has been offered with a total of 8 variants, out of which three - XE, XL and XL CVT belongs to the petrol fuel trim while the remaining five - XE D, XL D, XV D, XV D Premium (leather), and XV D Premium (safety) lie under the diesel guise. In the top-end variant XV, with the diesel guise, the company has presented two special paid optional packs in the form of leather and safety. Nissan has made an array of cosmetic changes both inside and out which pampers an individual adequately. However, the company has refrained from making any mechanical changes or enhancement in the dimensions of the sedan; instead retaining the original one including the transmission also.

Nissan Sunny Exterior

The Nissan Sunny is quite distinguished from its predecessor in terms of exterior appearance, owing to the brand new Teana inspired 'Boomerang' follow-me-home headlamps that are placed

well inside the restyled front bumper. The slightly V-shaped front grille too gains more dominance this time around and hold the company logo at the centre. Beneath the headlamps, the Sunny flaunts an all new pair of fog lamps with loads of chrome surrounding. In all, the front fascia is, undeniably, more premium and up-market than before. Going to the sideways, there are the sleek as well as aerodynamic side mirrors with integrated turn indicators. The flared wheel arches have been blessed with 15" 12-spoke alloy wheels; a distinctive Y-spoke design. Coming to the rear end of the vehicle, the first thing that would catch your attention is the newly designed and enhanced rear bumper. The company has integrated the all new tail lamp cluster considerably well which further compliments the sportiness of the rear portion. There are also chrome touches at the rear just above the number plate which transform the sedan into a much premium territory. Furthermore, there is a black ‘splitter’ which has been used to break up the large 490-litre of boot. Also, there is a short antenna which has moved back from the front just to compliment the overall appearance of the sedan and raise the ambiance. Nissan Sunny is being offered with as many as six vibrant colors - Nightshade, Pearl White, Deep Gray, Onyx Black, Bronze Grey, and Blade Silver.

Nissan Sunny Interior

It is the area that has gone under the hammer the most and appears drastically changed from the outgoing model of Sunny. The grayish interior shade has gone for a toss in favor of a more appealing and premium shade. Chrome accents are being placed at essential points while the all new 3-spoke leather strapped steering wheel is a revelation. Furthermore, the music as well as bluetooth controls are mounted on the right side of the wheel, followed by the silver inserts make it further sporty. The centre console is being done in Piano Black finish with silver finish on the sides. Nearby, there are two cup-holders in order to keep small belongings. The front doors are designed in a manner to have bottle holders along with pockets for maps and notebooks. The top-end variant comprises of leather seats as well as leather covered gear knobs. The Sunny sedan is really admirable for the knee room even for the rear seats. There is plenty of space at the back which makes it a perfect wagon for long drives.
Nissan Sunny Interior
Nissan has loaded an array of comfort and convenience features to this Sunny sedan. It in-houses an automatic climate control air conditioner where you can adjust the temperature of the cabin as per your desire, irrespective of the outside temperature. There are circular A/C vents at the rear too for the sake of rear seat occupants and these vents are more precise when it comes to air adjustment rather than the traditional ones. Moreover, there is a rear adjustable centre arm-rest with cup-holders along with adjustable rear headrests for the much needed convenience and comfort to the rear seat passengers. As for the infotainment, the Sunny comes loaded with a 2 DIN Wide-display Audio System with AM/FM radio and CD player. It also features a large, colored, easy to read display screen regarding the information on audio and songs. There is also a provision of bluetooth hands-free calling and audio streaming through which one can one can listen its favorite tracks stored in mobile on the audio system. The company has left no stone unturned to lure the music lovers as it has also provided an AUX and USB slot, by virtue of which one can simply connect the iPod or MP3 player and enjoy. Additionally, as mentioned before, the volumes can also be adjusted via the steering wheel and phone calls can also be received.

Nissan Sunny Engine & Transmission

The Japanese automaker Nissan has presented the entry-level saloon Sunny in both petrol and diesel guises. The company has refrained from making any modifications in the Sunny; hence, retaining the engine specifications of the same phased out model. The petrol variants carry a 1.5-litre motor with them which has Electronic Fuel Injection Control as fuel system. The 1498 cc, 4-cylinder, 16-valve engine is being christened as 'HR 15'. It is capable of churning out a top power of 98 bhp at 6000 rpm with the manual variants while the automatic variant gets an exceeded power of 2 bhp which makes it 100 bhp at 5600 rpm. Though, torque remains common in form of 134Nm at 4000 rpm for both the manual as well as automatic variants. The engine gets coupled with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a XTronic CVT transmission.

On the other hand, the diesel avatars of Sunny are being offered with 1.5-litre K9K dCi engine which has been re-tuned to yeild a better fuel economy. The 1461 cc motor has Common Rail fuel system and it generates a maximum power output of 84 bhp at 3750 rpm along with a peak torque performance of 200 Nm at 2000 rpm. Sadly, there is not an automatic transmission on offer in the diesel fuel trim and the company has opted for its conventional 5-speed manual transmission in an awe to maximize mileage and performance.

Nissan Sunny Mileage

Nissan Sunny offers a satisfactory mileage in both petrol and diesel guises as compared with the other sedans in the segment. The petrol variants with the manual gearbox deliver a fuel

economy of 16.95 kmpl, while the automatic variants returns a promising mileage of 17.97 kmpl. These are quite acceptable, reckoning the impeccable performance of the sedan. On the other hand, the diesel variants come up with a fuel efficiency 22.71 kmpl; still quite low as compared to segment leader City but acceptable. It has exceeded by 1 kmpl than the previous version of Sunny due to the re-tuning of the engine.

Nissan Sunny Braking and Safety

Nissan always has taken care of this aspect cautiously and subsequently it has returned rich dividends to the company. In Sunny sedan, it has incorporated disc as front brakes while the rear braking system is drum. This primary braking system is complimented extremely well by the trio of Antilock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) in each and every variant of this sedan. Also, driver airbag is a standard safety feature across all the variants. The top-end trim XV D features front fog lamps which are quite helpful during inclement weather. It also has the front passenger airbag while the paid optional trim XV D (safety) comes with additional side airbags for the front seat occupants.

There are also several alert systems included in the sedan such as low fuel level warning, door ajar warning, speed sensing auto door lock, headlight on warning lamp etc. to aware the driver of the tricky circumstances ahead. The company has also installed a heap of security features to encounter the thieves and lock-pickers. Nissan Sunny comes with Immobilizer, Central Door Lock, Key Remove Warning Lamp etc. as standard security features across all the variants. Additionally, the mid-level and top-end variants feature Anti-theft Device with Alarm and Seat Belt Warning Lamps as extra security features to keep you car protected from goons as well as bullies.

Nissan Sunny Performance and Handling

The Nissan Sunny flaunts an all new 3-spoke leather strapped tilt electric power steering wheel. It is quite light in maneuvering the sedan across the narrow streets and the sedan too responds almost instantly and precisely to the driver's directions. The tilt steering wheel further facilitates the driver to adjust the steering position according to his/her comfort and
convenience. Although, despite all this, the handling is just okayish. There is also a first-grade suspension system with Mcpherson Strut as front suspension while the rear one is Torsion Bar in the Sunny sedan. The manual transmission and the automatic transmission of petrol variants of Sunny touch the 100 kmph barrier from standstill in a mere 12.7 seconds and 12.1 seconds, respectively with a common top speed of 175 kmph. The diesel variant crosses the same barrier in a time frame of around 14-15 seconds with a top speed around 160 - 180 kmph.

What do we think about Nissan Sunny?

Since the Indian debut of this sedan in 2011, It is the most complete car in all the aspects. Be it the elegant exterior appearance, be it the luxury packed interior cabin or be it the avant-garde safety features and performance, it emerges triumphant in every aspect. Except for the loose handling and not-so-brisk acceleration with the diesel variants, it is a marvel; a true peach of a car that truly deserves its sticker price. So, if petrol is your flavor and performance is your priority, then choose Nissan Sunny, unarguably.

Nissan Sunny Competitors

Nissan Sunny is pitted directly against the like of Honda City, Hyundai Verna Fluidic, Volkswagen Vento and Renault Scala. Currently, City is dominating the C segment of cars due to the exquisite Japanese technology being indulged in it. However, the competition is fierce as battle of troy and Sunny can outshine all its counterparts if Nissan can back its dealership networks, spare part division and lower down the cost of ownership.
