About Porsche

Porsche AG, a reputed German automobile manufacturer, specialises in producing high-end sports cars, sedans and SUVs. Porsche AG has its headquarters in Stuttgart and representative offices/showrooms in almost every major country in the world. Volkswagen AG is the primary stakeholder in Porsche, whose current line of products includes the 718 Boxster/Cayman, Cayenne, 911, Panamera and Macan.

The honour of establishing Porsche AG goes to Ferdinand Porsche. The company was founded by him in 1931 with its main office located in Stuttgart. In the initial stages, Porsche did not manufacture any cars in its brand name. It concentrated on offering motor vehicle development and consulting services. The German Government assigned Porsche the task of designing a car for the people. This event saw the birth of the Volkswagen that literally translates into ‘Car for the people.’ The first design, the Volkswagen Beetle was a runaway success and proved to be one of the most successful car designs of all time. In 1939, the company developed the Porsche 64 using several components from the Beetle.

Foundation of Porsche

With the commencement of World War II, Porsche started concentrating on designing tanks and developed the military variant of the Volkswagen Beetle, the Kubelwagen and the Schwimmwagen. Porsche could not bag the contract for manufacturing the heavy tanks, but the chassis built for the Tiger I tank proved useful for designing the base for the Elefant tank destroyer. During the end stages of the war, Porsche developed the Maus super heavy tank.

World War II took its toll on the German manufacturer as the Volkswagen factory in Stuttgart fell to the British. It resulted in Ferdinand Porsche losing his position as the Volkswagen Head with the British taking it over. His son, Ferry Porsche took over the responsibility of steering the company out of its difficult situations. The Porsche 356 designed by Ferry became the first Porsche model to be sold by this fledgeling company. After his release from prison in August 1947, Ferdinand Porsche took over the charge of the production of the Porsche 356. The demise of Ferdinand in 1951 signalled the end of an era.

The war resulted in a shortage of automobile spare parts. Therefore, the Porsche 356 used several components from the Volkswagen Beetle. There were three evolutionary stages for the 356. Erwin Komenda, the designer of Beetle’s body, took over the designing of the 356 as well. Since its inception, the main characteristic of Porsche has been the air-cooled rear engine configuration. It improved the overall balance of the car.

The year 1964 saw the release of the Porsche 911 with a 6-cylinder Boxer engine. The designing of the vehicle was the responsibility of Ferry’s son, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche because of the differences with Erwin Komenda. The 911 was Porsche’s iconic model on the race track.

The Acquisition and the Expansion

In 1972, the company became a public limited company, Porsche AG. The Porsche family adopted the Honda principle of not having any family members on the Board. Hence, F. A. Porsche relinquished his charge and parted from the company to set up a new enterprise, Porsche Design for manufacturing luxury articles like watches, sunglasses and furniture. Ferdinand Piech, a vital family member responsible for the launch of the 908, 911 and 917 models branched out to set up an engineering bureau and went on to design a 5-cylinder inline diesel engine for Mercedes Benz. Later on, he shifted to Audi and later became the Chairman of the Volkswagen Group.

The first CEO of Porsche AG, Ernst Fuhrmann developed the Fuhrmann engine for the 356 Carrera and 550 Spyder models. In 1990, Porsche collaborated with Toyota to understand and benefit from Japanese lean manufacturing methods. Porsche became one of the foremost producers of automobiles with the introduction of the Cayenne model in 2002. The Carrera GT introduced in 2004 was the most expensive Porsche vehicle at that time with a price tag of Euro 450,000.

The Boxster/Cayman, 911 and Cayenne have been the highest-selling Porsche vehicles over the years. Porsche started expanding worldwide and began opening showrooms for its vehicles all over the world. Porsche has forged an excellent relationship with Volkswagen. The two companies had collaborated to manufacture the VW-Porsche 914 and 914-6. The Cayenne shares its chassis with the VW Touareg and the Audi Q7.

In 2007, Porsche SE became the holding company for the family. The year 2011 saw the merging of Porsche SE and the Volkswagen AG to form an ‘Integrated Automotive Group.’ This company controls various brands and companies like Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche AG, Ducati1 and so on. Currently, Porsche AG produces reputed models like 911, Boxster and Cayman sports cars. They also manufacture the SUVs like Cayenne and Macan along with the four-door Panamera.

Porsche is also one of the leading producers of hybrid and electric vehicles. Some of the reputed hybrid models are Cayenne S Hybrid, Porsche 918 and Panamera S Hybrid. The top electric models include the Boxster E and the GT3 R Hybrid. Porsche has also installed its first 350 KW 800 V electric charging station. Today, it is the fastest EV charging station in the world. It can charge the Porsche Mission E vehicle up to 80% within 15 minutes. In August 2018, Porsche announced the new name of the Mission E as “Taycan.” The launch of this vehicle will be sometime in 2019.
