Renault Kwid Overview

Renault Kwid is one of the most popular entry-level cars in India. Although it belongs to the mini hatchback segment, where it competes with the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800, its SUV-inspired design gives Kwid an impression of being big and muscular. The Renault Kwid car gets a very affordable price tag, but is designed and featured as the perfect combination of decent power and high mileage, much to the likeness of the Indian roads.

Renault Kwid Exterior

The Renault Kwid has been designed to be bold and muscular in appearance. It has all the SUV-ish traits, like a butch bonnet, black cladding on the wheel arches and a bold stance. If you look at the Renault Kwid images, you wouldn’t think it to be a mini car at the first glance. However, despite the extra bit of black cladding everywhere, the bumpers are body coloured. The body size is small and rides on 13-inch wheels. The mini-hatchback is offered in a total of five colour options - Moonlight Silver, Fiery red, Outback Bronze, Ice Cool White and Planet Grey.
The Kwid base model gets black plastic claddings on the front chambered front grille and black colour ORVMs along with plastic door handles. However, the top-end variant gets additional chrome inserts in places like the fog lamp surrounds and on the front grille. The door also gets chrome handles.

Renault Kwid Interior

The interior of the mini-hatch has been given a good fit and finish all around. The steering mounted controls and the digital speedometer will offer you much more value than what the Renault Kwid price suggests. The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display is placed just at the right height and you will not need to get your eyes off the road much. The infotainment cluster gets a MediaNAV system . However, some of the features are limited to the high-end variants only, including digital instrument cluster, radio-speed dependent volume control and seat belt pre-tensioner.
Unexpectedly, the cabin is spacious and has ample legroom and shoulder room for all the four occupants. However, since the Kwid has a shorter height, the seats are placed way lower. For tall occupants, the constant unnatural fold angle at the knee may be inconvenient during a long ride.

Renault Kwid Engine & Transmission

The Renault Kwid car is offered in two petrol engine options - a 0.8-litre and a bigger 1.0-litre. The smaller engine variant pumps out 54 bhp of power and 72 Nm torque while the bigger engine variant makes 68 bhp power and 91 Nm of torque. The transmission duties are done by a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox while the top model of Kwid gets an AMT unit. However, prospective buyers would still be hoping for the Renault Kwid diesel version soon.

Renault Kwid Mileage

Despite the lack of a diesel engine powerplant, the mini-hatchback offers quite an impressive 25.17 km/litre mileage. In busy traffic conditions, where the car crawls in the first or second gear, the mileage offered is about 15 km/litre. The automatic variant of Renault Kwid offers around 20 km/litre mileage.

Renault Kwid Braking and Safety

Going by the price of the Renault Kwid car, the safety features are quite ample. The car gets disc brakes on the front wheels and drums at the rear. Other safety features include speed sensing door lock, engine immobiliser, child safety lock and seat belt warning. However, car ranks mediocre in terms of safety as there are no ABS and EBD (electronic brake-force distribution). Hence, drive in the monsoon weather with caution.
The base variant of the Kwid gets seat belt warning only, while the top-end variant gets a single airbag (driver only) and seat belt warning.

Renault Kwid Performance and Handling

The Renault Kwid features quite an ample specifications for the city drive and will not let you down. The McPherson Strut and Twist Beam suspension on the front and rear wheels respectively form a greatly configured setting for bumpy cities and high roads. However, the car lacks the grunt when you get on the highway or expressway. Also, the engine starts making noise and you will feel the annoying vibration if you force the car beyond a certain speed. Keep the speed to the optimum and the Kwid will run on butter.

What do we think about Renault Kwid?

The Renault Kwid has been quite an outstanding model in the company’s lineup and has managed to keep the market share up, along with the Duster. With this kind of specifications on offer, the mini hatch is the perfect car that is offered at an unbelievably low price. But be careful about the lack of proper safety and braking additions. The Kwid, of course, would make a very good choice owing to its unique and out-of-the-box styling, something that the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 (its prime competitor) misses out on.
The Kwid may miss out on many features, for sure. But if we look at the budget mini-hatchback segment as a whole, we will find that there aren’t many models on offer that have better specifications. The Kwid with a 0.8-litre engine is a great option if you are tight on budget. However, if you seek performance and ready to spend a bit more, go for the 1-litre engine option.

Renault Kwid Competitors

Believe it or not, Rs. 2.99 lakhs is the on road price of the base variant of Renault Kwid (Ex-showroom, Delhi). The Renault car is a direct competitor to the small cars like the Datsun Redi-GO and the Maruti Alto 800. In fact, with such features on board, it also gives some amount of competition to the mid-range hatchbacks like Tata Tiago and Maruti Suzuki Celerio. A little bit more on the safety features and braking front would mean the Kwid to be the ultimate misery for its rivals, giving them a hard run for their money.
